TennisGeek's Match Record Book Volume 1

I need a place to keep track of my training log other than my challenges.

It would be fun to keep track of my tennis matches I play too.

I may not put in food log as I use MFP.

All exercises are done in my basement with very limited weights or the locker room of my tennis club with body weight.

Played 100 minutes of tennis. Just hit balls. The difficulty "medium".

Forehand - getting better. Used more open stance and tried my right leg push to add more pace. I can certainly add more pace. If I can get used to the timing better, esp. holding my left shoulder, it's going to be much better.

Backhand - same. As laying behind the left wrist completely, I can control much better, and I can even hit good cross court ball. It's just not natural to lay back the left wrist and hit the ball to right. My brain understands it but my hand does not.

Played two sets of doubles with A. L. against T.W. + A. P.  6-0. 6-4. Difficulty: Easy to easy mid.

Other than volleys being too shaky, everything else was decent. I won many points hitting down the line heavy topspin dipper very accurately.

I picked off many droppers and half volleys, and lobbing was very accurate. Serve wasn't spectacular but didn't need it at all.

Forehand: Down the line was awesome, but cross court is still troublesome. I need to learn "hit on the run" cross court a little better.

Backhand: Inside out is much better, down the line was OK. I gotta learn to hit the short hop with more top spin.

Afterward, I hit with A. L. for another 40 minutes to make it to two hours. Again, using more open stance.

Hand still gets away hitting forehand. Need to fix something, not sure what it is.

Despite playing every night this week, my body feels great, maybe thanks to stretching.

Played A.P. 4-6 6-1 Easy to easy mid.

I watched a USPTA's "how to serve" on Tennis Channel yesterday, and I wanted to try some elements.

I can get a lot more racket head speed. That's good. I lost some control, but I was able to add more top spin to the serve so I kept it for tonight.

Also, I realized that I can use the same technique to the forehand. So, I tried that too, which works pretty well to add more pace to the ball.

I was so pleased with the pace that I tried the same thing with backhand as well.

Basically, I tweaked everything about my swing. When you have to pay attention to swing, you are not going to win, but that was fine with me.

I made many many errors from both forehand and backhand, but that's by design. I was starting to get groove in the 2nd set, and I did hit a couple of absolute MONSTA balls.

After that, I practiced serves. With the change, I am starting to get enough racket head speed to hit decent kick serve. I used to be able to hit kick but I lost it after knee problem so I was pretty happy with the result.

Played "David" for an hour. Easy mid. 6-1 3-1?

Forehand was bad, but had a couple of good shots. The racket face isn't where it supposed to be.

I need to figure out better backswing.

Backhand was pretty good, however. At this level, it's up to me to make it easy or difficult.

Oh, yes. With the service motion change, I had two clean aces to the T.

Came home and worked out:

Pull up: 4, assited 15# 10, 5

Played "Monk" for nearly two hours. Mid+  4-6 6-3

Forehand was sub par. Second set, it started to connect a little better. The back swing I was thinking -- I did it right a few times, but not enough.

Cross court was particularly miserable but down the line and inside out was OK.

Backhand was not great but serviceable.

The serve was average. No aces but good enough to win many free points.

I served out the last game with just first serves, got all free points.

Stretched.

Oh, right. Two things made it rather difficult.

1. I forgot my shoes. I had to wear the "emergency" shoes in the car which hurts and makes me feel like I fall over.

2. I forgot to take my happy pill this morning. I had to have prednisone right before going to tennis, and it was hard to focus.

Played tennis for 90 minutes with the google guy.

Difficulty : unknown but all out.

He is a very good player but doesn't want to play any matches, so we just bang the balls as hard as we physically can. We are probably clocking 50-60 MPH.

Forehand was connecting better. My arms/elbows are tucked in so it's more like my old swing which is flatter. I should have practiced freeing my elbow a lot more so that I can add more power and spin.

It was interesting to stand 2, 3 ft back than I usually do and step into the ball. It is definitely easier to see the ball.

Played for 2 hours, first with asian skinny guy and second with white skinny guy.

We practiced instead of playing game. I wasn't feeling great today so it was fine.

I focused on the forehand using "elbow sticking out" and rotating upper body well. It adds so much more racket head speed.

At some point, I want to control the racket a little better to hit more "thick" while the racket traveling up but certainly even the flatter/"thin" contact shows really great shape of shot.

Especially inside out, I can hit with so much better power.

Next step is to have a little better feel on the height of ball.

Backhand: I just hit. Focused on forehand.

Played tennis for an hour from 10pm with "big A". Difficulty: Mid-. 6-1, 4-1

I did not remember to use the "elbow out" until 2nd set. Once I did, everything clicked much better.

One ace to T.

My head was a bit hazy at beginning and made everything a little hard.

50lb DB is the heaviest and kind of limited in this small fitness room. I did bent over row with 50lb DB and 10 L/R was no problem. I guess I have to use the machine.

LifeCycle machine lets you do variety of cable workouts and it's lat pull down is def almost my weight, so that's pull,up,replacement. Problem is no weight seen so I have no idea of plate weight.

Played tennis for 2 hours. Just banged ball with "Steve". Difficulty: Mid minus

After 10 days lay off of tennis, it was good to just hit. I was a bit rusty at beginning but I think I started connecting pretty well.

I did not get the pace I wanted but the forehand was relatively solid.

Backhand was not getting much pace either but at least I was making very few mistakes.

So, it was a productive to shake off a bit of rust.

I need to stretch now!

Played tennis for 1 hour with the copy writer. Difficulty: Easy+. 6-2, 4-0

"Elbow sticking out" serve was awesome. I get a lot more racket head speed which allows me to spin more.

I hit aces of short angle from deuce and ad sides each. Slider to the T was working great. Body serve had a lot of action.

Well, when I don't have to hit my best, it's rather easy, I guess.

Groundies were OK. Forehand was relatively reliable. There were a couple of shots I should have made but I also hit a lot of put aways both cross court and down the line. I also hit a pretty good down the line from backhand, and ended the hour with backhand cross court angle shot.

I'd like to feel more solid hit from forehand but it's doing its job for now. Let's see when I play a much better players.

Played tennis for two hours with the google accountant.

I think I need to change the grip a little so I can feel that my hand is connected to the racket better. When I take a full cut with western grip, the ball definitely has much better penetration. I need to be able to do that more consistently.

When I hit with him, he seems always fraction slow, and I can get to the balls.

The ball is traveling fast yet I feel like I always have enough time to get to it. It mY be because his ball is pretty flat, and it's easy to handle.

Played tennis for two hours with the Chinese restaurant owner. Difficulty: Medium 6-1 6-1 6-6

I was moving very well for first two sets and got tired. I wasn't focusing too well in the 3rd set.

Serve: Erratic. The match started with a double fault, but until 3rd set, I did not lose any service game. The pace wasn't there. Around 3rd set, I started setting feet in the right position, and getting more serve in.

Forehand: It was decent until 3rd set. 3rd set, everything was a bit off. 1/2nd set, I had a few beautiful cross court winners.

When I took a full western grip with smooth swing, the shape of shot was pretty good.

When I took a few full cuts, I missed all wide.

Backhand: Same ol' same ol' However, I think I hit more winners off of back hand both cross court and down the line. Short swing and using body was pretty effective though the ball didn't have much of shape to it.

If I can beat him 6-1, 6-1, I'm doing pretty good.

Played tennis for 2 hours with the Skinny Asian who quit after 1.2 hours, and played with lefty.

Third night of 2 hour session and I still feel fine. My body is definitely is fitter.

Forehand: terrible. OK with cross court, nothing going on for down the line. Missed almost all of down the line shot. The height control is not there. I need to find a way to connect with hand better. When I do full western grip and take a full cut, it's a crap shoot in terms of height control. Sometimes the ball goes to the ground (facing too downward) or homerun, (facing too upward). To make it consistent and comfortable, I need to make some changes.

Backhand: Pretty good. I held the racket a little tighter to the body and used shoulder turn. Not as flashy as forehand, but better control and decent pace. Moreover, it's very consistent. Shorter swing also helps both prep/recover. It tends to sail when the ball comes in fast or I'm late.

Played 2 hours with the Chinese restaurant owner again. 6-2 6-1 3-2

I broke a string. Good reason to take a break tomorrow for restringing.

Serve - it was better all around. The toss was more consistent. I hit two out wide aces spinning out on deuce side, two or three to the T, unreturnable wide from ad side twice, and pretty solid body serve on breakpoints.

I didn't lose my serve until 3rd set when my head was totally hazy from exhaustion.

After all, this is my 4th night in a row to play 2 hours each.

Forehand - marginally but certainly better. However, how I can perform with better player, I shall see.

Backhand - not a real improvement but had a few good down the line winner.

Overall, I played smart. I had a few good shots.

Played tennis for 1 hour / hit balls with the investor.

Forehand: I need to use more "elbow sticking out". When I did, it generated so much more racket head speed.

Backhand: It was pretty good.
