TennisGeek
2014-03-08 Sun Played for an hour so far. (I'm going out again) Difficulty: High 3-6 2-2 Forehand did not work. I need to use left hand to take the racket back. When I did, it worked better.Any time I tried to muscle the ball, I missed. I can get plenty pace without muscling so I should learn to use body mechanics. I managed to win enough points to say in the match without forehand. TennisGeek
2014-03-11 Tue Played tennis for 1.5 hours, just hit. I'm so fed up with my forehand that I gave up using the arm twisting and elbow sticking out and what not. I simplified the swing and it was much better. I still used small component of pronation but kept it minimal. I think I can still generate enough power. I added some weight to the old racket and it played much better. TennisGeek
2014-03-13 Thu Played tennis for an hour. Difficulty: Mid-, 5-7 I PLAYED MY WORST TENNIS OF THE SEASON. I was so disappointed, I almost cried on the court. After hand shake with smile and coming back to the club house, I had to gather myself up for a while before taking shower. I was trying to simplify my forehand, and it kept breaking down. I probably lost most of my points missing forehand, and after a while, I lost my head. TennisGeek
2014-03-16 Sun Played a set of tennis: Difficulty: Mid+ 6-7 So, I have come to a conclusion that what I was trying to do with my forehand does not work for me.Back to the drawing board. After the Saturday's miserable result, I brought out a basket and hit self-feed balls for a while. I have to keep the elbow tucked in to have any racket control. Nothing else works. I get a little bit less power but I can hit with still pretty good power. I think that's my ceiling and I have to work with it. With that, I played a match with a new guy. Forehand was serviceable, and I had much better control with it.What I need to work on is that, I have to add more power from the rest of body, particularly from legs. Also, with the elbow tucked in, I need to, again, learn somewhat different way to hit the high forehand. I should have won the match. I was up two breaks early in the set, though the serve was okay, it should have been much better. As a total match, it's not that great, but in the scheme of improving shots, it was very meaningful, and also entertaining. In short, I was finally having a bit of fun playing tennis. I know I broke a string and I had to restring tonight. It's odd I don't remember anything. Tonight, I played a Harvard guy. Just practice for 2 hours. My forehand - As I try to hit the ball on the rise, my hand is tucked in, and using left side of body to generate power. It's similar to how I used to hit but I can put more pace, and better control. In short, it works much better. Backhand - as I try to hold the racquet above my left wrist, I can hit much better. All in all, it's getting better. TennisGeek
2014-03-29 Sat Played the Chinese restaurant owner. Mid+: 7-5 6-2 5-1 I simplified the forehand, and cut down the error. Once I got the groove, it worked okay.At the end of first set, I had two monster forehand shots to close off the set. I know I can do it, without a lot of arm.Around the 3rd set, I can even hit a okay cross court forehand.I still have some work to do but it's a step in the right direction. Backhand was average, but had a absolute monster shot down the line. Serve - by lowering toss, my first serve percentage, and the control (I guess both are related) improved.I was tossing too high. Also, by lowering toss, I can brush up the second serve easier. TennisGeek
2014-03-31 Wed Played tennis for 1 hour - just hit, practiced serve, and then body weight training. Forehand - Instead of shortening the back swing, I took the racket high and in front of my head. That forces me to loop the forehand, and then slows down the back swing. TennisGeek
2014-04-16 Wed Played tennis for 2 hours: Difficulty: Mid+ 0-6 5-7 Disastrous forehand recovered in 2nd set but it was still not good enough. It's certainly half technical and half mental. OTOH, it was a great forehand practice as I was able to hit a lot of ball in game situation. When I was "confused", the racket wonders around and I take the racket back with arm. When I am focused, the racket goes back with upper body while the racket and shoulder turns. I need to have a muscle memory of unit turn. That's what I need to work on. The guy returned well, run corner to corner all night. So, give him the credit where credit is due.For this kind of guy, the definition of serve needs to be better. If it's spinning wide, it has to spin better. If it's body serve and come in, the first volley has to be hit well to the open court.
