THE BIG KAHUNA

NAIGC Nationals Open Division

When: April 3 – 5, 2014
Where: Chattanooga, TN
Events: All-around (Vault, uneven bars, balance beam, and floor)
Description: I will be competing with at least 3 of my female teammates in the Women’s Open Division on Friday, April 4th on all events. Saturday, we'll watch the Finals from the more competitive division, cheer on any teammates who make it to Finals, and enjoy an awesome awards ceremony and banquet.

Background:

tumblr_mzq9xwdlNs1spd99co1_400.jpg

Former gymnast from ages 3-13, competed between ages 4-12, reaching USAG JO level 8 before leaving the sport. Diving team in high school, but dropped off the sports radar after that. Rediscovered gymnastics as an adult in July 2013, joined an adult recreational team in October 2013, and will compete in my first meet as an adult on 3/8/2014 as a precursor to the NAIGC Nationals on 4/4/2014.

Goal 1: KEEP IT TIGHT

tumblr_mz05m5Rb8S1sczpcpo1_400.jpg
It’s already habit for me, but it’s essential to my main goal, so we’ll keep it here for keepsake purposes. I’m dropping the cardio and WODs as part of this goal. I’ll still do them on days that I have the time and inclination, but I don’t want to include them as gradable criteria.

  • Gymnastics 2-3x/week [3x a week every week it is possible]
  • Strength training 3x/week [Weighted or bodyweight]
  • Conditioning 5x/week [Conditioning after every gymnastics practice and 2x rest of the week]

Goal 2: DR. GOODBODY

72eUF.png

Injury has been an issue for me the past few challenges (pulled tricep, wonky left shoulder, sprained right ankle, and probably others I’ve been forgetting) and I believe it will likely continue to be. This goal will focus on strengthening the joints that have been an issue for me (shoulders and ankles) and general upkeep and mobility work. As I’ve seen in the past couple of weeks, nothing cramps my style like injury, so this is gonna be my prevention route.

  • Shoulder Shocker 3x/week
  • Band pull-aparts 5x/week
  • Ankle strengthening routine 5x/week
  • Stretch 5x/week

Goal 3: PUT DOWN THE COOKIE

BEuU_kHCAAEmKdU.jpg

I am officially calling quits on my somewhat ridiculous eating habits. I’ve been pretty lax on them over the past two challenges because I didn’t really care, but with such a large competition looming ahead, I’ve got some real motivation. I really want to look and feel my best at Nationals, which means adjusting my snack habits and leaning out so I can rock my high cut leotard and tumble with more confidence. Plus, it’ll just help out with my gymnastics over all, and I really do need to chill out with all the chocolate and cookie snacks.

  • Follow my plan to reduce my snacking habits:
    • Breaking fast at 12:00 PM every day
    • Snack seshes limited to 1 at work and 1 in the evening
    • No eating while standing around in the kitchen – must be sitting down
    • Kitchen closes at 9:30 PM on normal days and 10:30 PM on gymnastics days
  • Limited alcohol consumption to 1x a week (up to 6 times before Nationals)

Life Goal: THIS IS NOT SUNNYVALE

tumblr_mxryvnn6OT1spd99co1_500.jpg

With my previous attention-sucking hobby of video games and my shiny, new(ish) energy-sucking hobby of gymnastics and working out, our house is constantly under Shit Siege. I hate the Shit Siege because it feels like a constant losing battle. This challenge, I am going to gain some ground and try to break the Siege once and for all.

  • Go through our clothes, make donation bags, and ACTUALLY GET THE BAGS OUT OF THE HOUSE
  • Clean out fridge 1x/week and keep list of items use-by dates on the fridge to prevent food waste
  • Laundry at least 2x/week to get rid of that floor laundry clutter
  • Clean out pantry 2x/month for clutter maintenance

All grading will be on the standard % scale per week. [90-100% = A, 80-89% = B, etc...]

Many pieces, but the puzzle isn't as complex as it looks, I promise. (I was actually about to link a spreadsheet, but that will do very little to impress that this is not complicated...)

Flights are booked for Nationals as of last night, as well. PA-POWWWW!

Niiiiiiice, RAPTRON. My phone autocapitalized that. No regrets here. Looks intense, but I'm sure you'll be flying through them with ease!

WOOOO! WELCOME, WELCOME, WELCOMEEE. <3

Harika: I was actually just looking for a gym with a nice empty workout room that I could use for handstands and the like, but I searched adult gymnastics classes near me on a whim. I just lucked out because there was an incredibly affordable program right by my work, which was astonishing, I think. I'm not sure where you are located, but this list: http://masters-gymnastics.com/?page_id=9 is pretty good for the US. There are probably some programs it doesn't include, but I've been told it is a pretty good one!

Hope you can find a place near you!

Also, I'm not going to log anything yet because it's still Day -5 or whatever before the challenge starts, but I did make it to the gym today. Didn't lift very heavy, but other than a weird misstep as I was putting on my rainboots, I had only twinges in my ankle while squatting and pressing today. My shoulder is verrrry grumbly about missing through two weeks of shockers though -- I had to grit my teeth through the entire last set. I think I'll be okay to pick up 2-3 weight sessions a week again for the next 6 weeks. :D

Can totally relate to the house becoming unmanageable if you let it slide. Really, even if I don't do the dishes for one night it seems like this tumor growth the next evening. It's ridiculous. Same for everything else. Why can't the dust just go to the neighbours or something?!

Keeping up that wisdom of moderation, I see. ;)

Good news that you're feeling capable, though. Making it to the gym and pushing for what you can benefit from, but no more, is always the key/challenge/nuance/fun of it. =D

Also, I'm not sure where you are geographically (I'm assuming somewhere near Tennessee, or I just don't know how Nationals work, haha) but I want to trick together some day after the meet. =D My favorite training partners are the ones who can teach me shit, and I bet I'd learn a lot from spending time on the floor with you. =)

I'm actually around Boston, MA -- and from Chicago originally, which I see is about where you are located. :D

Love to try tricking together sometime! I may be visiting home sometime in the last summer this year, I think.

Not-a-real-update Update: Wore grips for the first time tonight! I started to break them in this evening after spending what felt like a million years sandpapering out the finger holes so I could actually get my fingers in there (forgetting that sandpaper, when rolled up, works both ways and sanding a ton of little abrasions all over my hands in the process). They're weiiiird -- I mean, I understood on an intellectual level that part of their purpose transfers force of your swings onto your wirsts/forearms, but feeling it in action is something else.

Also, could not wait until the challenge started to report that I was able to successfully back tumble tonight -- threw about 7-8 round-off back handspring back tuck tumbling passes without issue except for one that was particularly low and jammed my ankle a little bit.

Anyway, that's all. I just needed to share. :3
