german
From my previous challenge:As some of you know, this April I am becoming 40, so in full mid-life-crisis mode, I am training for a Half Ironman distance triathlon (that's 1.2-mile (1.9 km) swim, a 56-mile (90 km) bike ride, and a 13.1-mile (21.1 km) run, in under 8:30 hrs), which I hope to accomplish in time for my birthday, I am running the RAGE Las Vegas Half, on April 12th.Based on free online plans, with some help from a coach, and some tweaking to allow for life to happen, I came up with this Awesome 70.3 plan, I'm currently on week 5, so this challenge should bring me right into the race, (one week after the end, hence the 7-week thing!). Challenge Goals: 1. Swim, Bike and Run, according to plan 2. Finish RAGE Half triathlon, goal is under 7 hours, but anything before cutout (8:30hrs) is still awesome. 3. Setup a plan for the trip, I'll be travelling with the whole monkey family (wife and two little monkeys), and it is going to be our "main vacation" for this year, so the race is just the beginning, in the past I've set up spreadsheets, found coupons and made reservations which resulted in great vacations, no reasons not to repeat that again. I will not add points this time again, it makes little sense to me and the main focus is to actually train and plan the trip!! 2 germanmonkey scout "swim, bike, run", or at least "Don’t drown, don't crash, don't walk"“If you ever start taking things too seriously, just remember that we are talking monkeys on an organic spaceship flying through the universe.†-Joe Rogan Link to comment

Well done on your swim PB Thanks kiwi! We'll be flying to LA and dirving to Vegas (and Grand Canyon, San Francisco...)! Saturday was long ride day, 70km in 2:55.Today Brick, 15min run + 20min bike + 15 min run. I am considering a half marathon that takes place three weeks before the race, or three days before my longest planned run (19k), it think might be a good motivator, I could run 19 and walk 2 (and cancel 19k Tuesday run), it's government-organized, so really cheap. Any opinions? germanmonkey scout "swim, bike, run", or at least "Don’t drown, don't crash, don't walk"“If you ever start taking things too seriously, just remember that we are talking monkeys on an organic spaceship flying through the universe.†-Joe Rogan Link to comment
18ck
I say go for it - you'll get more out of being in a race than you would from a normal run and it's far enough away from the half IM that you won't be drained. MathiasMag
Yes, I'd definitely go for the race. I plan to participate in as many races I can over the next few months. You're going to my old neck of the woods. I used to live in Denver, Colorado. I'd try to get in the petrified Forrest if I were you. Though it may be too far to the east and I'd visit Avenue of the Giants. That in turn is a few hours north of SF. What is in closer striking distance is Hearst Castle which I also enjoyed. Speaking of which, you absolutely have to drive highway one up to SF or back down. Link to comment

german
Thanks guys!, Mathias, I'll check those places and consider them in my final plans! Yesterday I finished the day with a 2600 swim Today, long run, 15k, although at km 13, I was really tired, hungry and thirsty, and started cramping, so I walked the last two kms, not good, I think need to implement some sort of nutrition/hydration plan, these fasted-state workouts have worked well so far, but I think I ran out of fuel (and water). I already eat something before long bike rides, I may need to do something of the like for long runs as well. germanmonkey scout "swim, bike, run", or at least "Don’t drown, don't crash, don't walk"“If you ever start taking things too seriously, just remember that we are talking monkeys on an organic spaceship flying through the universe.†-Joe Rogan Link to comment
MathiasMag
I'm not sure on the need for food befor 15K, but I'd definately bring and drink water. Running on an empty tank is probably not wise, but it depends on how much fasting you do before. Running 15 while hungry is a cruel and unusual form of torture. :-) Link to comment
KiwiChick
Have you thought about what fuel/food you will need for your race? Maybe start training with the same stuff both drinks (electrolytes to help avoid cramps?) and food if your going to go down that route. I used to have an iron stomach for eating bananas, jels and snack bars while running and cycling but there is no way I could do it now, makes me a little nauseous thinking about it. Totally agree!, The race is on Saturday, so I told the family that the vacation trip begins on Sunday, and whatever we get to do before that is a plus! (we fly Thursday), also, my wife has agreed to do the driving Sunday and Monday, in case i need to get some rest. 1 germanmonkey scout "swim, bike, run", or at least "Don’t drown, don't crash, don't walk"“If you ever start taking things too seriously, just remember that we are talking monkeys on an organic spaceship flying through the universe.†-Joe Rogan Link to comment

I used to have an iron stomach for eating bananas, jels and snack bars while running and cycling but there is no way I could do it now, makes me a little nauseous thinking about it. Great swimming as always! Actually, I am not very clear on that front, I usually eat a PB and banana sandwich before a long ride, and sometimes nuts and/or banana mid-ride, but I have not really thought on what to eat, I know I'll have two bottles of liquid (one water, one gatorade) while on the bike, and rely on race hydration for the run, I should probably start eating something while riding (I just got a bento-box-lookalike for that purpose), energy bars sound like a sensible idea, PBandJ sandwiches may be another good choice, I don't want anything complicated, because the race is in the US, so either pre-packed or easily available in the States are some of my concerns. germanmonkey scout "swim, bike, run", or at least "Don’t drown, don't crash, don't walk"“If you ever start taking things too seriously, just remember that we are talking monkeys on an organic spaceship flying through the universe.†-Joe Rogan Link to comment
