Mini Quest 3: Be Brave

Well. ... three times I want too say bull on the beauty I can't, and who cares about heels, they hurt (lol).

But I'm not going to repeat it three times. I just want you to know that those definitions are so tempted up by the media. A smile is the most beautiful item a woman can wear.

Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk

I have to agree with you on the smiles. And yes stupid media. But in my line of work of getting rich people to donate their hard earned money to charity you have to dress the part. And certainly do not. I've been told on multiple occasions I won't get by on brains alone. I sometimes wish life was like The Voice. Hah... let me tell you how awesome my programs are without you looking at my converse and World of Warcraft t-shirts and unkempt hair.

I found a beginners dance video that doesn't make me cringe

My goal is to prove I CAN do this while having fun and not thinking I look quite so much like Tina Belcher.

Actually getting through a whole hour of that without dying might be a challenge for another day.

P.S. Go for it, Wirilome! Think of it as reaffirming that you CAN do sprints three times over!

Thank you and I will!

WIRI!  Oh my goodness, how have I not seen you around?  Good to see you :)  Remember; sprints are just really fast walking.  You can do that.  I have every confidence in you.  Just remember to start small!

I know I'm going to try these on Wednesdays with my runs on the track. I will sprint on the straight side and jog the rest and then go at it again. I have a plan.

And good to see you around as well!

What I think I can't is climbing. I don't think my muscles are strong enough for that. But I won't have time this week to go there anyway, esp. on such a short notice.

So what I will try, is go one extra time running. (4 times). or maybe even 5? After two last years where I injured myself I am always terrified of injuring myself and hold myself back, I think too much :)

I "can't climb" either. Even though I was a bit of a monkey in elementary school. But no idea where I'd start trying to attack this, without managing to hurt myself.

I attempted to cross monkey bars today. Could never reach in primary school, and by the time I could I was 'too heavy' and winded myself when I tried it. But today I could hold myself up, and even managed to swing a couple of bars in before my muscles gave up.

It's not much, but it's a start :)

Thank all you beautiful people for the links!!!

a cart wheel is not as complicated as it sounds, but having your feet fly over your head does make people nervous.  Start with balancing half moon pose against a wall.  Excellent youtube tutorial for you  Let us know how youre doing!

I never even considered yoga to help with this. I think part of this mini-quest for me will not be actually completely a cartwheel, but just starting to "train" for it. Maybe a good goal for this week will be getting the half-moon pose. I don't exactly have the best balance, so this will be a (welcome) challenge!

Cartwheels are awesome! This tutorial looks helpful, too:

What a great tutorial! I love how they have broken it down into steps. It makes it so much less intimidating. The conditioning exercises at the end are just what I need to get started this week!

Here's the first one of a tutorial I'm planning to use one of these days: there are 4 parts in all.  Good luck!

Broken down into steps for newbs like me! Great :)

Monkey bars! What a great mini-quest! I loved the monkey bars as I kid but got too heavy (and weak!) later.

Great start!

I always tell myself push ups are too hard, so that is what I am going to work on. I'm also going to use this quest as an excuse to call both the fitness centers in my area and ask about prices. This involves talking on the phone in Russian, which is one of the hardest and scariest things for me to do!

I'm not actually sure what I would do for this challenge. Push-up would of been perfect, but I was working on it in my last challenge, so I know with practice it is do-able.

I did read someone was doing a cartwheel and went "Psh good luck, I will never be able to do that" so perhaps that might be a good candidate though I am not sure if I have the room to do one at the moment. I will think on this more.

I have a major trust issue regarding my wrists. They have been my weakest point pretty much all my life, and are known to suddenly wuss out on me on occasion - which may result in me face planting spontaneously, especially during yoga, planks or push-ups of any kind.

Nonetheless, I would love to be able to do a press handstand (from a standing position), but I have never tried.

I simply "can't" bring myself to lean forward and shift my weight to my hands until my feet leave the floor, so I have no idea if I'd actually be able to bring my legs up into a full handstand or not.

So I'll wrestle down that feeling of "Oh, god, oh, god, we're all gonna die!", find a nice, comfy wall to lean against (that might help? maybe?), some really big cushions to spread on the floor in case my wrists give out and then let the wussies do their worst. (Or hopefully not! )

I'd cross my fingers, but that might make this even more difficult than it already is... :nevreness:

Can't is a lot harder for me now, since there are things the I want to do, and previously could have learned to do them, but my heart changed the game for me.  My can't right now is live a normal life.  not sure how I can do that withing the means of a mini-challenge.  One thing I have been putting off lately is going back to the DAV.  It's not that I can't, its just a fear of what would happen if...

Push-ups??

Have you tried knee push-ups at all? I do those every once in awhile when I my shoulder gives out on me.  And depending on my energy level I do them with yoga as well.

If you are still struggling with a 'normal' push-up with the proper form keep working on the tire height ones, you could also incorporate planks, full and half positions will help get closer to getting it done.  There are also many variants of the push-up, narrow, wide, diamond, incline, decline, and more.  Maybe try the some different stances with them and use that to build up to a regular wide or narrow grip one.

Wrist

I have had trouble with wrist pain, but luckily they have not given out.  there are stands that you can use to keep them straight, I also used to do pushups with my hand in a fist and kept my wrist locked straight.

Also here is a post from Chris Salvato on handstand wrist pain. He did a guest post last October.

So many bold, brave people!!  Colour me impressed!!

Remember that you don't have to be able to complete the thing you choose to try, you just have to try it.  This is an attempt, not an achievement challenge.

It's more than a start: it's awesome!!  That exactly the sort of thing I was thinking of when I drafted this challenge. Good on you!

I can't do the splits anymore.  I could years and years and years ago. Easily.  Left, Right and Center.  I can't even come close to this now.  so although its not a fear... I'm wondering if it counts?

Absolutely :)

I always tell myself push ups are too hard, so that is what I am going to work on. I'm also going to use this quest as an excuse to call both the fitness centers in my area and ask about prices. You had me at "talking on the phone" let alone in Russian!  So extra brave.  I wish I was allowed to hand out arbitrary stat points, because I'd definitely give you some for that :D

One of my current goals is to work on a handstand. Due to a problem with my wrist I have to do a forearm stand. My I can't is that I am too scared to kick up to the wall. The only space I have available is right next to two hard wooden tables that I am afraid I will fall onto.

I am going to do a kick up to the wall. I doubt I will fall into the tables, its just that when I think of something bad my mind tends to stick to it. Ugh.

Forearm stands? That sounds like a thing I might try before trusting my wussy wrists with my full weight... Thank you! :encouragement:

Good luck with the kick up! You can do it!

Well, my ultimate 'I can't' has always been to lose weight (to neutral BMI/low fat %), be strong all whilst still being a vegetarian, and honestly I never thought I could do it until for almost half a year now (kinda hard to believe) things are looking very plausible!

Even on undertaking this journey, I've managed to do things I never thought I could. I've gone from never being able to do a single push up to now doing 20 max. I've gone from being a hopeless asthmatic to being able to jog for 20mins no issues. I've been training to do a pull up, I'm close but not there yet.

So this week, I'm going to run for 40mins straight and see how it goes... I might try to come back and think of something else that really maximises my performance...

+ I'm really going to give that pull up bar everything I've got and attempt a single pull up! It's doubtful I know, but not hopeless!

I like this challenge.

Recently I've been overcoming a lot of mental, emotional or anxietal (hush, it's a word) problems: joined a club and willingly socialised with people - and now teaching some beginner's some moves!; made myself go to a medical focus group which involved me talking a lot (a lot a lot) about personal issues related to a medical condition; tried on a dress(!); made the plunge and arranged to get my hair cut and coloured; applied for a job, got to interview and then when things went skew-whiff because the contact methods supplied to book the interview didn't work I didn't utterly freak out, I instead got angry and hunted down the person I was meant to contact.

I've even made progress on the physical, but there are still many 'I can't's floating around. Specifically I have putting off going to the gym and the free weight section in particular due to a combination of nerves and 'I can't lift heavy enough things yet, I need more practice'.

Taking into account this:

'I can't' lift weights in the free weights section. So I will go to the gym, talk to the (free) personal trainer who has trained national power lifting champions and explain that, while I'm still recovering from a hand injury, I still very much want to lift weights; ask him to show me some proper forms and then see about this thing called the 'one-armed dumbbell shoulder press'.

Also ask him if he can look over my bodyweight squat forms.

Physically, I'm blessed. Though I was chubby for years after moving to States but once food is sorted out, my body is fine.

Also, as I've been playing tennis and other sports long enough that I know I'm above average sporty type person.

When I was in a softball team or the current tennis club, I am clearly a better player.

Athletic things come natural to me.

I have a mental issue of feeling "not pretty". Yes, I'm a guy so socially not as bad as women side but since my childhood, my self confidence is totally shot.

I also felt that I'm not connected to people around me. I was different many ways in my family, and school friends too.

I probably have some shade of Aspy or attachment disorder.

Combined that and moving to States and living alone first time, I was probably in depression.

Even pumping gas was a mental challenge back then.

I'm an old man so it's getting easier but it has never been easy for me to make/keep friends because of social awkwardness.

For me, it's a small miracle that I married and have a kid.

Having said that, I've consciously worked on putting myself out and being socially more active for last 10-15 years.

Playing in a softball team, doing volunteer work, going out to poker nights and riding bikes with people at work.

Tennis is an individual sport but joining a tennis club helped me too.

Now, I do know there are some people who actually like me. I've never had that kind of sense growing up.

Introvert - that's exactly what I am. It drains mental energy with human interaction.

Anything to do with human interaction, I hesitate. I hate phone calls.

In person, you'd never see or feel that way me inside having a bit of battle anytime I'm interacting.

I can chat just like anyone, hold small talk, etc. I'm growing up in some sense.

In any rate, if I am taking up this challenge (though already in the mid week), I don't have good idea.

It's obvious that I cannot run 100m under 10 seconds, or bench press 1100lb, but for "anyone should be able to do" kind of physical challenge, I don't have any mental block.

For example, I've been trying single leg squat but I'm just not strong enough yet. I come close to do it but lose balance and fall.

So, if I cannot do whatever the thing I come up with, and I cannot do it, it's not because I'm not trying.
It's just because my body is not capable of doing it. Hmm.

Last night I decided to be stupid brave and attempt to throw all my weight on the wussy wrists in a wall handstand. It took a lot of convincing myself, and first I tried a forearm stand, as mentioned by Artemis... Which didn't work at all, since my back was pretty much collapsing even before my feet had even left the floor.

Um. Okay.

After some more pep talk and figuring out where to put my hands so I'd end up with my shoulders leaning against the wall, I managed to lift my feet off the ground. Not for long, but I managed to bail out voluntarily just before the wussies gave out on me.

Whew!

But this seems to be something I can actually work on in the future. :encouragement:

So thanks for the metaphorical kick in the butt! :)

Preach on.  When I'm on here,  I think I'm pretty sociable, but it's just really really hard to just interact with people.  I always feel like I'm saying something wrong or that I'm just being an idiot. Calling to order a pizza? Ugh, it's just draining.

It doesn't help that I don't really ever get chances to interact with people to try and hone my skills and NOT be like this either.

So today, I juggled!! I've always thought/been told that I can't because I'm too clumsy, so it's something I've never been able to do, and it didn't last long, but I tried it and tried it and tried it, and managed to get a few tosses in.  It's definitely a skill I would like to work on in the future.  The thrill of actually getting some tosses was pretty potent.  I love feeling that way!

How about you?  What have you tried this week??
