Bear Force One Conquers Compounds

After a very successful first challenge over at the level 1 rebel's group, I've decided to join up over here! Strength training has been my main fitness focus, so I figured it was a good fit.

My main goal remains the same for the time being: Fit back into my size 4 jeans. I began last challenge at size 8-10, and am now sitting comfortably at a 6, which is exciting!

Sub-goal 1: Deal with form issues (specifically my squat). I learned a lot last challenge about strength training, and got my feet wet in the free weights. Upon filming my squat form, I realized it was terribad and needed some remediation. So, I must do mobility work several times a week, and do several sets of body-weight squats every day.

Sub-goal 2: Fix my dick-around-itis. I've been "doing" SL5x5, while mostly dicking around. So this challenge I will be getting a notebook, and actually sticking to a program consistently, 3-4 times per week.

Sub-goal 3: Be able to do 10 real push-ups with good form. I can currently do 3, which makes me feel pathetic. To fix this, push-ups will be done on a daily basis, beginning with lots of incline push-ups. I will do these at my desk when nobody is looking.

Life Goal: Stop sucking at my job. I have no idea what I'm doing, and it's making me want to slack off instead of asking lots of questions. I really need to be better about this, and spend less time on reddit.

I'll have measurements/starting pictures up on Monday morning to kick things off!

Stronglifts has a pretty shweeet app.  It helped me keep on track, and it lets you easily scroll through your last workout to see how awesome you are now :)

Biggest things are form check, and just getting it done, day in day out.  We will help with that :)

Edit: from a brief profile stalk, I see you're a Harry Potter fan.  And you want to get better at pushups.  Welp, you should probably know about this then - http://rebellion.nerdfitness.com/index.php?/topic/46512-pushup-quidditch/

All men are frauds. The only difference between them is that some admit it. I myself deny it.

Quidditch pushups looks ridiculously fun. What a great idea! I'm definitely excited to utilize this guild's knowledge base to get my form sorted out. Thanks for the tip about the app, I'll have to check that out :)

So much this ^. I've had to resort to a time tracker ext for Firefox to help me curb my r/aww addiction.

Any woman that uses the term "dick around" in their challenge is gotta be pretty cool. I am subbing. Good luck!

Bahahaha. Thanks :)

I also like consuming alcohol, Sherlock and Dr. Who, but am far too uncoordinated for cartwheels.

Your challenge looks great (and your hair is super pretty!)

(was that creepy?  It wasn't supposed to be creepy)

Looking forward to hearing how you get on sticking to the programme! I have problems there myself, but am resolved to turn over a new leaf! What's your job?

I'm an Air Compliance Specialist for an environmental consulting firm. I work with municipal solid waste clients to ensure compliance with federal and local regulations. It's a lot of very specific region-based knowledge, and the company has been working with most of these clients for a long time. So adjusting to site specific issues/protocols for multiple states has been a challenge.

When I first started doing squats a few years back, my form was also pretty terribad.  I fixed it by adding box squats 1x per week to my workout schedule.

Basically, you just move a (robust and un-padded) chair or box into the power cage.  Instead of doing a regular unsupported squat, you simply sit down on the chair, pause, and then stand back up.  What it forces you to do is to sit back instead of leaning forward when squatting.  You engage your hamstrings and glutes more, and your quads less.  And that small change keeps you from utterly wrecking your knees.  Plus, your body knows what your posture should be when sitting in a chair.  If you are bent over too much, you'll know and will automatically fix it.

Do this enough times, and it will train you to use proper form.  (It took me several months to fix my bad habits)  The tricky part is finding a box that is low enough that your legs come down to at least parallel.

If you decide to try it, don't use too much weight.  You only need enough to feel some resistance.  I also suggest going down slowly.  Smacking your butt into a chair with too much weight on your shoulders really hurts the lower back.

Just a thought.   =)

Yay new warrior! I just started a new job, and I can relate todilemma of asking questions or feeling weird for asking too many. Here's to asking whenever we need to!

Also, pushups... not my friends, but there may be an upper body accountability group this time around... be on the lookout.

I had great success at the gym tonight implementing the box squat method. I dropped my weight down to 65#, and it worked like a charm. I felt my posterior chain engage much more, and it took the pressure right off my quads. Thanks so much for the suggestions :)
