Background:

The past few challenges have been focusing on preparing me to compete in gymnastics competitions. That culminated in competing at Nationals last weekend, which finishes out the competition season. It went okay. ;)

Normally, I would take this time to have some fun, learn new skills, and enjoy the freedom of a looser training schedule. However, Past Me hates Present and FutureMe and decided to sign up for the May 23rd GoRUCK Challenge in Boston, which is officially 6 weeks from tomorrow.

I have 6 weeks to go from a bouncy, gymnastics sprinter to an endurance and strength machine.

Motivation:
To be an asset and not a hinderance to the team in May.

Goal 1: Girl, You're Gonna Carry That Weight

Attempt to mostly follow the GoRUCK 6-week training plan (lol really?) subbing running for other endurance cardio work as necessary aiming for at least 4 of the 5 prescribed workouts a week and absolutely following the plan with regards to ruck out days.

Goal 2: Every Day is NOT Leg Day

My upper body is severely lagging behind my legs. While the GR plan and just having the ruck on will do some good things for my shoulders and the rest, I've got to prepare better than that. I will be following the hundred push-ups plan with a 4+ brick ruck for the duration of the challenge. Will be aiming to hit all 3/3 prescribed push-up workouts per week according to the plan. Initial test put me at 10 push-ups with the ruck, but I may follow the 1-5 program to start because I've found that these things ramp up a bit too quickly for me otherwise.

Goal 3: Flippin' Awesome

While gymnastics will be on the back-burner, I still want to try to go on Saturdays at the very least. This goal will be to attend at least 8 gymnastics classes during the course of the 6-week challenge and work on SKILLS.

Ideally, I want to make progress on one or several of the following skills: front handspring + front tuck + front tuck on floor, back handspring on balance beam, valdez on balance beam, round-off + back handspring + layout on floor, press handstand on floor, and aerial cartwheel on floor. These are all skills I could do when I was younger, so they're a continuation of my quest to be a better gymnast than I was when I was 12.

Goal 4/Life Goal: Don't Fear the Meter

I am going to hard track calories this challenge. The only challenge-related aspect of this will be to track daily and to report back to you folks about how my food's going. I may also share a MFP log or something like that. I want to lean back out, but I have no desire to do it quickly.

I am still working on a rewards scheme for this goal. I think I may create an achievement system for myself that allows me to purchase goodies off of my Amazon wishlist for things like 5-day on-target calorie streaks.

Disclaimer:

I know this is not a super assassin-y challenge, but <3 you guys and I'm not going anywhere.

I'm not sure, you still sound like an assassin to me with pushups and gymnastics! <3 Looking forward to following you again this time around!

Glad you're staying with the assassins despite some other type of goals!

We can do some supporting and whining to each other about food and diet things yea..

And not everyday is leg day? So sad :(

It's a lie. Every day is still leg day... >_>

I'm not sure, you still sound like an assassin to me with pushups and gymnastics! <3 Looking forward to following you again this time around!

Thanks, Lilith! I didn't abandon the tribe completely. :D

Holy hell did I misread your title... I'm guessing that was on purpose though.

And psh every good challenge is an assassin challenge, just the fault of the others not realizing where they should be :D

Maaaaaybe.

And hell yeah they are. Others are foolish to miss out on our shenanigans.

Doesn't matter if you do weird things like cardio, we love you anyway. :D

<3 But seriously, cardio? WHO AM IIII?

In for a Rucking Awesome time. :)

RUCKLE UP. KER-BLAM.

So I had no idea what rucking was until after feverishly googling about it after reading your challenge.  As an avid hiker/backpacker I'm kind of embarassed I didn't know actual events like this exsited... my interest is thoroughly peaked.  I can't wait to see how your training and the actual event goes!

I'm also glad you're continuing to keep up on gymnastics.  Yay skills!

Good luck on your ruck stuff, guess we can keep each other motivated on that mess. You'll rock the ruck though

The GoRUCK Challenge sounds amazing.

And echoing what others have said, sounds pretty assassiny to me, what with the gymnastics and push-ups.

Following along for the awesomeness :D

I was not acquainted with the GoRuck Challenge until I joined the NF community either. And yes, skills!~

Ruck yeah! You're gonna kill this. And BS, you have arm strength. That gymnasticy stuff is not easy. I -know-, I've been trying... I blame my weight

Marginal arm strength, maaaybe.

Good luck on your ruck stuff, guess we can keep each other motivated on that mess. You'll rock the ruck though

Ruck mess buddies. <3

That GoRUCK challenge sounds interesting. Is it basically a ruck march?

And I am also trying to be a better gymnast than when I was 12. Seeing as I didn't do gymnastics when I was 12, that doesn't say much. I am in awe of your skillz (yes, with a z).

Good luck this challenge. :)

Definitely take a look at the videos AKLulu posted. It is a combination of ruck marching, team building, and omg-everyone-hates-you-PT and takes place at night... I am in FULL SUPPORT of your goal to be better gymnast than you were at 12. Yeeesss!

The assassin components are sneaky... as they should be!

We are gonna ruck this shit up, yo!

Yea, yea, girl. We gonna ruck this ish.

Every day is leg day. :D

One of the guys at my gym calls me Leg Day, but the week before Nationals, I went to the gym on Tuesday and only did shoulders and elliptical for cardio training and he said he was disappointed in me.

Pre-Challenge SitRep:

My completely bananaphone week at work has finally wrapped up and should, hopefully, mean that stress levels will be returning to normal and that I will not be stuck in the office at 11:00 PM ordering cookies for delivery any longer. So that's a positive. The event I helped organized on Friday went spectacularly and we've got lots of good kudos coming our way.

On the not-so-positive side of things, I am mild to moderately concerned about the outside of my right foot. It's the same area that was sprained in early February and it has been hurting pretty consistently since last Friday -- the level of pain has waxed and waned, but it's definitely not felt good any day this week. The pain is distinctly different than when I sprained it, and feels like it is along the side of my foot rather than wrapping around my ankle. I am trying to favor it considerably, so all running has been on softer surfaces (grass mostly). I may schedule an appointment to get it looked at -- even if it turns out they just tell me to try to stay off of it, it'd probably be good to know what is up.

Also in the not-so-positives, I did Day 2 of the GRC training schedule:

87Rg8.png

And christ on a cracker was I not prepared. I have done SO little endurance work. This is going to be very interesting...

Did 3 sets of the metabolic circuit instead of 4, and the sprints were not that sprint-y as I was favoring my foot. Instead of measuring out 400 meter runs for the PT, I also just did 2.5 minutes of running to simulate a shitty 10:00 minute mile. Whoever programmed walking lunges after 50 bodyweight squats should die in a fire. Talk about wobble-knees!

Also did my hundred push-ups W2D1: 4, 6, 4, 4, 6 with 25# weighted bag.

I am officially intimidated by the schedule I've got ahead of me, but I intend to persevere.

Hey, I was wondering if you were going to do a challenge this time round. Welcome back!

Oh yeahhh. In it for the long haul! Thanks!

#1 rule of rucks: don't arrive injured.

Favor recovery over training.

Right. I always mean to follow that on paper, but I, like many others, have trouble determining how much training is beneficial before it tips the scales in favor of harmful. I took a full week of rest last week -- while it wasn't 100% by choice because of my hectic work week, I would have definitely taken it easy last week regardless. I was still walking on my foot though, which cannot really be avoided, and it had worse days and better days because of it.

I think this week, I'll be trying to figure out what its limitations are, icing regularly, and perhaps wrapping it/taping it up for gymnastics if that seems to help. My biggest concern is less about jumping, tumbling, and running on it, as on-the-toe movements do not seem to irritate it as much, but more about walking + weighted ruck marching on it, as the full range of motion and weight-bearing aspects of walking do hurt. This week is experimentation week and will be 100% about listening to my body.

That said, weekly outline as planned, but subject to change on foot status...

Monday: Gymnastics + 1.8 miles with 4 bricks

Tuesday: GRC W1D3 metabolic circuit + W2D2 push-ups

Wednesday: Rest

Thursday: GRC W1D5 interval cardio (whatever form of cardio doesn't hurt)

Friday: GRC W1D6 cross training (30-40 minutes low intensity cardio, likely biking) + shoulder-to-shoulder sandbag PT

Saturday: Gymnastics + 2 miles with 4 bricks

Sunday: GRC W2D1 bodyweight PT + Easter Brunch with nerds <3
