The Primal-ish Syren

Syren

Recommended Posts

Playing with my cats, gardening, and hanging out with my guy seem to be the most common lately. And I have discovered that I am absolutely terrible at first person shooters.

Purty good so far. Spreadsheet indicates that I still really like bread, and hummus, and sugar in general.

That last line sums it all up for me. Hummus has the lead so it's all good as Gwynnie would say.

Welcome to my day late Earth Day post! (Maybe consider this Earth Week?!)

So along with my nerdom, I am also a crazy (but hopefully not smelly) hippie. I think of this hippieness as an extension of my nerdiness, though some may disagree and call me an extremist nutbag :mushroom:. One of my life goals (that is very slow going) is working to become more sustainable. Basically I am attempting to attain sustainability in terms of consumption of my natural resources. My natural resources happen to be your natural resources, along with every other living thing on earth. We have to share you see, and there is a finite amount for all of the things. I for one think that all living things are important, not just the things that make my life comfortable or make up my immediate food source. Furthermore, all living things form a precarious balance, and even if you cannot see the immediate effect of removing something from that balance, it could have repercussions on my survival in the future. Really I am looking out for myself in this, and the cute and cuddly, creepy and crawly, or outright gross things happen to benefit :panda:. I call this my contribution to mutualism.

Exposition aside, what I am trying to do, is become more conscious about what I am consuming, what kind of energy and production goes into those consumable products, how much waste I am making, and then making slow changes in what or how I am consuming things depending on situations. Is this a lifestyle for everyone? Absolutely not. What does all of this accomplish?  Well in the grand scheme of things, it may not seem like one person practicing sustainability amounts to much. However, I, being a nerd, like to think that "even the smallest person can change the course of the future."

Sustainability is not necessarily all about the gloom and doom of the world ending due to global climate change, or holes in the ozone layer (which are completely unrelated natural phenomenon), but being aware of your surroundings and further being aware of how you interact with those surroundings.

If you are interested in a mini challenge for the rest of April, take a look at the things you throw away for a week, and just be aware of how much of that will be going into a landfill, or washed into a stream. If you are further interested after a week, look at those things and see how much waste is truly necessary. Think about how this situation could be made better. Then you are one step closer to a more sustainable lifestyle. :onthego:

But anyway, enough of my preachy, environmental, dribble. Onto the midweek update!

I have maintained, maintained my streak of burning the adipose! Along with this comes the realization that every time I start to lose mass, it always starts in the breasts. It is never convenient enough to start on the backside, or in the fat rolls. As I feel that I have an ample amount of chest fat either way, the loss makes my swim suit fit more loosely and drag a bit, thus meaning I will have to buy a new one soon because it will wear out faster now.

So it goes.

having spoken on sustainability, my eating habits are not that. Between tracking where the food is produced, what chemicals are in the food, and how things are packaged, to forgetting my cloth grocery bags, I am always surprised I retain a semblance of sanity (most minutes of the day). I will be working on this this weekend Since the rest of this week is a bit crazy.

Other primal habits seem to be having ups and downs. But that is to be expected I suppose.  :pirate:

Oooh, a sustainability challenge!  What a great life goal.  I sometimes kind of sort of think about making it one of mine, but I'm not very good about making it a priority.  But your suggestion of awareness of creating trash is a good one.  I'll keep my eyes open the next few days.

In my mind, eating more healthy seems to fit well with being sustainable -- less processing and packaging, right?

Eating more healthy definitely fits in with sustainability, but it also greatly depends on where you get your food. Farmer's markets are the best when it comes to processing and packaging, but if you happen to live in one of the worse states in the US for local food production (like Alabama), you might have to deal with the plastic clamshells (found out that most of these are recyclable), or plastic wrap and Styrofoam trays (the world's worst consumable products ever created) from your local grocery store coming in from hundreds to thousands of miles away. Most people don't care this much about how they get there food. Lots of students I teach at a university have yet to realize that chicken does in fact come from an animal. The former I understand, the latter almost makes me want to punch kittens.

Or people who don't want food that came out of dirt (ew,gross, dirty). They would prefer some nice clean potato chips please.

Ah, the SCUBA trip has ended, and the waters have receded from the places of knowledge.

So back into the maintenance swing of things, as well as trying really hard to ignore sugar (and failing spectacularly!)

I have decided to do something interesting with my excess time between the spring and summer semester to try out something new that I am going to tie into the next challenge. This is a preview, maybe?

Anyway, I started today with a little bit of yoga, only 15 minutes because it was hard to get motivated this morning. Wednesday will hopefully be a good 30 minutes.

Today's swim, shortly after food and yoga, was stolen from the US Masters team, because it was still on the marker board when I got to the pool :D

300 swim, kick, pull easy 100's, freestyle

300 drill left arm, right arm, swim 25's, choice

200 kick easy - fast 25's, choice

1000 swim easy - fast, 100's, freestyle

450 pyramid swim 75, 50, 25 IM no freestyle

150 pull with tennis balls, freestyle

100 kick (no board, no fins), freestyle

2500 Total

Food was ok, but certainly not Primal. I have ignored cookies...

That workout was only an hour and five minutes for me. I try to make all of my workouts about an hour with five minutes to one side or the other for a cool down and stretch.

My workout today was only 2000 yards, but it took the same amount of time. So it really depends on what I am swimming, how hot the water is, and how motivated I am. Today was drills (which are slooooow), the water was 86*F (way too hot for sprints), and I waited until 2 pm to swim (which indicates that I was not motivated in the slightest bit).

Today's Workout

4*300 Swim, Kick, Pull Reverse IM order

400 Kick IM

200 Swim IM

200 Pull freestyle

2000 total

Then I did a very light body weight workout in the locker room, because why not?

1 x 15 squats

1 x 15 lunge

1 x 15 wall push ups

1 x 15 triceps kick backs

I was a little too wobbly to do more than one set, this is why I should not in the future.

Your workouts always blow me away.

Do they ever do competitions or races or anything for swimmers where you are? I know there is a 5K almost every weekend during spring, and bike races throughout the year, but I don't know the culture well enough to know how swimmers get together and test themselves.

So week 5... I don't want to talk about week five. Week five and I had a fight, and I did not win.

Summer semester is going to be a little more difficult than anticipated, so I will have to finagle with timing and finding of sleep in the next couple of weeks. But bonus life points on unknowingly becoming a pool supervisor?

You know how you are really tired, exhausted kind of tired, and you think that exercise might be a bad idea, but you go ahead and do it anyway, because it is a something you are supposed to have made into a habit, but then you start a hard core sprint session, and you really cannot function as a sprinter, and you did not eat because you will always have problems eating before a sprint session, then you feel like you are about to die anyway, even with water 79*F? That was the pool today.

I enjoy the way you have recorded your food with all of the ingredients. You anticipated my questions such as "What is a yogurt jar?!" Before I asked. Very suave.

Looks like an awesome eating/exercise week!!!

I read Small Gods a long time ago, when I was a teenager. I remember enjoying it but I can't remember what it's about.

Tee hee.

I have found a new (2007) diet to try.

The Low Carbon Diet

(Not to be confused with a low carb diet)

I found this a truly entertaining way to spend my afternoon since I am not allowed to nap.

SCIENCE!

Bon Appetit
