My overall goal is simply the Missouri Warrior Dash on Saturday, October 15th.

To get there, I need to run...it's 3.17 "hellish" miles...and I need to be able to hoist my body over the many obstacles.

Fitness Goals

  • Run 3x a week - ramping up the distances so I'll be prepared to run the 5k+
  • Strength train 2x a week - focusing on body weight exercises like push-ups, inverted rows, etc so I can get myself up and over the obstacles.
Oh yeah...and I'm not going to shave until after the Warrior Dash.

Life Goals

  • Donate all of the stuff I've sorted in the past few months to clear out my basement
  • Sell at least 3 things on Craiglist

They have already begun announcing Warrior Dash locations for 2012. So far, they have Arizona, North Texas, and Colorado which might be close enough for you.

Yes! I'm signing up for the AZ one soon.

That's one seriously cool race. Can't find anything remotely like it anywhere in the country :(.

You are seriously not shaving for a month? Ok, now you definitely need to post race pictures, LOL.

There might be some similar races you can find closer. Like Tough Mudder maybe?

Just don't think I will be able to do one of these anytime soon with college. I looked at the tough mudder though and they are planning to come to NM in the future so thats my best bet!

Good luck! Here's my notes on the warrior dash if you want to read them:

Thanks for that link - I remember seeing it when you first posted it, and I'm glad you posted it again. I was already planning on incorporating trail running. At Busiek State Forest, the trails there criss-cross over a stream, but I doubt I'll be able to add actual mud running for any decent distance.

What to wear (including shoes) has actually been on my mind quite a bit. I'm doing this in mid-October in North-Central Missouri, so weather could be anywhere from 30 to 70, and bone dry to monsoon to snow.

I'm torn between wearing my Iron Maiden shirt for Run to the Hills (which has the record cover on the front, and the bloody text "Run For Your Lives" on the back. Another option would be my Iron Maiden Killers shirt (album cover on front, bloody text "Killers" on the back).

The Run to the Hills is perfect, but I'd hate having to throw it away ($20 shirt!). The Killers is old, but it's also a tent on me...3XL. So, I'm fine with getting rid of it, but I may need to cut it up the side and/or cut the sleeves off to reduce drag.

Shoes is also something I'm wondering about. I may buy a cheap pair of trail shoes to wear a few weeks before. Shoes are something I have decided I'm no longer willing to be cheap on, so I don't want to sacrifice a good pair for one race.

If it helps any, I picked up a pair of vibrams specifically for the race. They run anywhere from $85-$100. They suited me just fine, and I threw them in the wash afterward with no ill effect on the shoes whatsoever. They suited me just fine through the water, the trail, and the mud at the end, probably due to minimalist design and close adherence to your feet.

It would mean a huge change in your running style, but it may be worth looking into.

Any mud get into the shoe? Just curious.
