Life Goals

  • Donate all of the stuff I've sorted in the past few months to clear out my basement
  • Sell at least 3 things on Craiglist

Filled two bags of adult clothes to donate today.

I have three sales postings now:

3 San Diego Chargers Jerseys (they are 4X, so way too big for me)

An 11-tape Star Trek VHS set

A set of Lund Hood Scoops.

This weekend, I'm going to sort all of the kids clothes and will list them for sale as well.

running tonight. Added bonus for incorporating the elements. It was my first run in actual rain. When I did the 5k this past Spring, it was chilly and misted for a bit.

Tonight, though, was a steady rain and lots of puddles. 1.5 miles in 14:40. Good for a 9:47 pace. It was too dark when I passed the 1-mile mark, so I couldn't see what my split was.

I also started taking Glucosamine/Chondroitin. My doctor actually recommended I take it after I complained of knee pain from squatting last winter. I happened to be at Walgreens, looking for my VitaminD supplement (that he also recommended, and I had been taking), when I saw they were both on sale as Buy 1, Get One Free. Considering the jar of 120 tablets was $30(!), I figured I'd try it on sale. I have enough for 80 days - you're supposed to take it 3x a day. So we'll see how it's going after 9 months.

I took yesterday off and went to bed early, with a plan to run Tues, Thurs, and Sat.

While that normally would have been great, I forgot today I was giving blood. So I had no energy tonight. I dozed off on the couch after dinner, but I dragged myself up and tied my running shoes on.

1.5 miles again, in 14:49 - 9 seconds slower than last time. Man, I am beat.

My co-workers in Ohio did the Hellrun this past weekend. However, it has come to light that it was more of a Hell "Stroll". They freaking walked it. I looked at their times - they all finished right around 61 minutes. I know one of them really well since he used to live here before relocating to Ohio, so I will be ragging him mercilessly.

Bought a pair of saucony progrid trail shoes to train in, as well as some good quality socks. Did a trail run this afternoon. 1.47 miles in 17:37

Holy crap, that's slow. However, in my defense, the trail consisted of

.05 mile of flat, .25 miles of winding, steep up hill, .1 of flat, , .25 of very steep, winding, uphill, .1 very steep downhill. Basically, it starts in a valley, and runs up the ridge and down the other side. .75 miles to where I turned around and then came back. It was about half paved, and half woodchips and dirt (mud today, considering the rain that was here all morning).

According to mapmyrun.com topography map, it had 161 feet of ascent. I never stopped jogging, but that 2nd hill was a killer.

I did the Tennessee Warrior Dash Last weekend. My training consisted of a 1/2 mile loop on uneven terrain around a neighborhood school and I added 4 exercise stations (running tires, running steps, calisthenics, and a really steep hill) for each loop. I tried to simulate running and stopping for obstacles so I can keep up my pace on the course. The WD course is made for people at many levels of fitness and if you have the goal of completion, you should be fine.

My wife developed a chest cold the week before the race, so that affected our time, but we had a blast and look forward to doing it next year. Tough Mudder is coming to Tennessee 2012, and I am determined to prepare to tackle that course which is suppose to be ten times more difficult than Warrior Dash.

Yeah, I may revise my training schedule and not worry about 3.1 continuous miles. The trails around here are a perfect mix of uneven terrain and hills. Mentally, I'm just not a fan of distance running. I know I can run a 5k without stopping, but it's a miserable process where I'd rather be doing just about anything else.

Running on trails, though, is much more interesting.

My wife is out of town, so my son didn't have a choice on whether or not to come with me on my run today. However, I did offer him the chance to either run it or that we could bring his bike.

He chose to run it since my goal was to run 2 miles to stay on my training pace. We did the trail we did before (a split of paved and wood chips/dirt that runs along a stream). At the half-way point, I started getting an abdominal cramp, so I had to walk for 2 minutes until it worked out. He kept right on chugging, though, and while I gained some ground, I never came close to catching up to him.

He finished a minute faster than me - 19:20 to my 20:43. We finished the first mile at 9:10 or so (pretty much same pace we ran the first time), so our 2nd mile split was slower. As I said, I had to walk for 2 minutes, and I'm sure he slowed down because I wasn't on his heels anymore.

Once again, he was a champ.

**Update - after my run tonight (9/27) which I knew was exactly 2 miles, I realized that the distance had to be off on that trail. Sure enough, I went back and used the satellite map which is a bit more exact. Each leg is .47 miles. not .5. So, that equates to 1.88 miles, not 2.

2 mile run tonight, and I was feeling really good. Steady pace, never got into an oxygen deficit, and when I got to the end, I felt like I could have gone another mile at least. The first mile was pretty flat, but the 2nd one has two hills (one of which is about 3 blocks long).

Then I saw my time and realized why - 20:52. So I learned two things:

If someone isn't pacing me (such as my son), I slow down. I did the first mile in 9:30, and the 2nd was done in 11:22. Bleh.

I need better music. While my running mix fits thematically, the songs need to be a faster tempo.

Same route, except I extended it .28 miles with a further half-way point. Ran about a 15 second faster pace this time - 21:07. I both love and hate those two hills.

Like all of the other recent challenges, I'm nearing the end of my current challenge and I can't stop thinking about the next one. Warrior Dash is in 12 days, and while I need to continue to run my 2+ miles 3x a week and do bodyweight training, all I want to do is rejoin my gym and start lifting again.

I am psyched for it....a week from Saturday!

Last night I went right to bed after jogging, so I didn't log anything.

2 miles in 20:41 - 4 seconds slower than last time. Argh. I did the first mile in 9:15 (about 15 seconds than the first mile on Saturday), but then I once again went into autopilot. I kept catching myself as I would notice I was slowing down. I know I can run faster when I have someone pacing me, so I'm not too concerned at this point, but it is irritating.

Switching to faster music hasn't helped yet.
