Heyo, fellow Nerds! Geek here, reporting for duty. Again. I've been out of the game for awhile, trying to get my life and everything else on track. I can't say for sure if I'm headed in a straight line yet, but I've got a job again and if all goes well, I'll be in school for a license to teach high school biology this summer. With that out of the way, I've been encouraged (read: poked by Stooshie) to rejoin the ranks of the NerdFitness challenge.

I do sort of keep up with my Academy work, at least. Or I did until I started working Pods at work. Something about hauling 40-60 pound dogs around all day while they try to eat each other made me not want to do anything involving muscles when I came home. I know, naughty Geek.

So here's the Mission! Quest….Thing

Get back in shape, as defined by four things:

1. NOT getting out of breath when heading up the hill to the barn in a hurry.

2. Be comfortable with the idea and undertaking of hikes/walks that last over an hour.

3. Lose the extra pudge I've picked up over the past few months. This is an issue of body image and visual aesthetics rather than a true 'health' thing, but it is important to me.

4. NOT breaking into a panic when a family member insists that I 'go out and DO something'.

With this quest in mind, and those criteria, my three goals for the challenge are as follows:

1. Exercise 5 days a week, with three of those days involving a walk of some kind lasting 30 minutes or more. The other two days can be anything exercise-y that lasts the minimum of 30 minutes. Right now I'm looking at time at the gym, Academy and Circus Yoga workouts, and the Jillian Michaels DVD a relative sent me. I'm going to be using The Walk on my phone to help track most, if not all, of my walking, since the incentive of making exercise a game really does help me. Completing this quest will net me +3 STA and +1 CON.

2. Practice yoga 3 times a week. This won't count as part of Goal 1, but as a supplement to it. Two of the three days will likely be the non-exercise days, and the third on a day off when I have the time to devote to a longer practice. The yoga will serve two purposes: first, to manage and expand my flexibility; and second, to remind me to take time out to breathe. Breathing is good, or so I've been told, and even more so at this altitude (nearly 8000 feet). Completing this quest will be worth +2 STR and +1 DEX

3. DO something 6 days a week. Especially on my days off, I'm very guilty of finding somewhere comfy to hide and just sit still most of the day. This is a baaaaaaaaad habit that I need to ditch. DOING something means doing something that requires my conscious attention and participation. Watching movies and television are out. So is reading. My one day of 'rest' will be on Fridays, when my family settles in to watch a movie together. Party Night has been an institution since long before I was born, and is one we've handed over to the extended family. You do NOT miss Party Night unless it's a dire emergency. End of story. Activities that are likely to take place include….quilting, sewing projects, learning to knit (a la Stooshie), cooking/baking, cleaning and organizing, and gardening. Completing this quest will be worth +2 WIS and +1 DEX.

Exception: If Friday happens to fall on a day off work, I may DO something anyway and save my one day of couch potato-ness for a really bad day at work.

Level Up Life SideQuest (Or, Leading the Ents to War, if we meander along in Stooshie's footsteps)

Complete the patches for the wedding quilt I'm assembling for a wedding in July. It's a split rail, 5 colors, 56 patches with 3 patches already complete.

Bonus: get 50% of the patches for Stooshie's LOTR-themed quilt assembled and ready for Stage 2.

And there you have it! This Geek is going to try her damnedest to complete these goals and take a few steps towards the end of the Quest.

Stay tuned for updates and a list of rewards (because holding something overhead while the victory theme plays should not be reserved only for video games).

SO! Day One!

Not off to the most inspiring start, but we're still doing okay with everything. THIS is why there are days off built into the system.

I woke up to two or so inches of thick, wet snow with a ton more falling. Not only did this mean cold feet at work all day, but it meant mud. Here in the lovely Land of Enchantment, where our state soil is the awful and rather questionable named 'penistaja', odds are good that the soil outside your front door is rock-solid, brownish, and full of rocks roughly 97% of the time. If it's not sunbaked, it's frozen solid. The other 3% of the time, though, it's sopping wet. And when that happens, you discover that the clay content of the local soil is pretty high. You usually notice this when ten pounds of clay mud have adhered to each of your feet.

So walking after work was out, because the entire county melted into a sloppy puddle by noon and there was enough mud to build a whole new pueblo if only I had straw bales. (Oh wait, I did! I tripped over three of them and got a facefull of moldy straw!)

Because of the weather, the mud, the wet, the mud, and the wet (did I mention the mud?), work was a lot more handson than it usually is. It's hard to get traction on a smooth concrete floor when the treads of your rubber boots are caked with slippery mud (worse than doggy doodoo when it comes to sliding). So work was a workout and the idea of having another one was painful.

So yoga to the rescue! Just short of 45 minutes slow practice before a nice shower did the trick.

And as for my DO something of the day, I pinned and began seaming a baby quilt. All the pieces are attached to each other in one way or another, so now all I have to do it get the seams in where they ought to be. I also put together a spreadsheet to track this challenge's progress. Find it here!

Lesson for the day: a box of doggy biscuits, if wrapped in a plastic grocery bag and left on the floor beside the work gear, fill function like the puck on an air hockey table if you step on it. The budgies did not appreciate me nearly marrying my face to their cage wall.

Ugh. Moldy straw is so nasty. Also, is it bad that I could actually smell the mud reading that? We've not had mud down here since monsoon... And it's weirdly cold here today too! It was 65 all day after jumping to 90 last week. What is with the weather lately?!

Yoga... I need to go do some of that...

Fast update because BLAH, it's late.

Ended up pulling a c-c-c-c-COMBO today. Walked a total of 16 minutes (booked it down river and back for a family party) and practiced my handstand for another 15 minutes or so. I didn't plan for combinations in my calculations, but the last-minute family gathering kind of threw me for a loop.

As for DOING something...I made two batches of ganache. I got an order for Easter truffles today and have to have them and a batch of caramels done before 5pm on Friday.

Today rocked. I'd planned for a workout, but ran into a friend in town and spent 45 minutes or so with her, walking around the park. Well....sort of walking and sort of jogging to keep up with her dog. Got home and made four flavors of enrobed truffles and a batch of caramels. While candies were setting up, I finished a baby quilt top!

More short-posting, because this Geek is wearing herself out.

Long but fulfilling day at work. I did get a few good nips, though, and a 65pound cuddlebug wearing a pitbull suit smacked me hard enough to bruise in his efforts to get a little closer for proper snuggles. Taught one of the foxy ladies in Pod One to shake for a treat, though, which was kind of awesome.

Yoga and a Circus Strength routine tonight.

Started making chocolate boxes for those truffles. I really need a paper scorer.

I liiiiiiive! Several of the last few evenings I've woken up at my computer, having fallen asleep and dozed/drooled for twenty minutes or so, so there haven't been any updates.

But there has been progress! I've gotten a lot done, and ended up taking last night off from 'doing' things because we had a family party after I trained the new guy in the cattery, so I was kind of wiped. I did make Easter baskets, but all that entailed was sitting on my bed and throwing things into boxes, because I wasn't doing any of the arranging.

I also did a squat and lunge routine on Friday, thinking I could walk the stiffness off while working pods on Saturday...but my schedule changed and I did cattery instead. Which means doing intermittent squats for a few hours...I hurt, people. SO much.

Lesson learned this week? Don't drop the drain grate on your foot (Seriously....OW).

Weekly grade? A

Plans for next week?

I was hoping to make it up to the West Rim for a walk, but I have an order to fill. I'll be making a double-layer sheet cake shaped and frosted to look like a Minion from Despicable Me and a dozen and a half pink strawberry cupcakes that also look like Minions. The birthday party is on Saturday, and my days off are Tuesday and Thursday.

Also have to build a new Etsy shop because my boss wants to promote my chocolate making. EEK!

Woke up after snoozing over my laptop for half an hour or so last night, so...no post. I'm not sure what to do about this 'dozing off with no warning' thing, because I wake up easily in the morning and know that if I try sleeping earlier than I already do, I'll just wake up earlier as well. I go to bed between ten thirty and eleven, depending on whether or not I dozed off previously, and I get up between six and six-thirty. It's not like I'm pushing the limits of reasonable sleep times.

So far, we're in track with one walk, two workouts and a yoga session. This week's DOs have been baking two sheet cakes for a project, prepping fabric for a new quilt, and laying out patch pairs for Stooshie's quilt (also a mathematical panic when I forgot that the quilt has TWO color sets, so all 63 blocks will not be made of only one stack of patches. I'm a doofus).

Tomorrow is my second day off of the week, and much of it will be spent baking strawberry cupcakes and frosting a giant Minion. Yes, a giant Minion. Wanna see?

475b443c-f1df-4d63-bad6-758d72c61d1f.jpg

Obviously, this isn't MY cake, but I'll be following the instructions with some tweaks. No canned frosting for me, and no two-inch thick layer of frosting on a peppermint patty for the eye. It's all swiss meringue buttercream and homemade marshmallow fondant for this girl. The cake underneath is fudge with ganache filling.

The cupcakes will be little pink Minions, as my coworker's two kids were born a few days apart and are having a joint birthday on Saturday.

THIS is the quilt I was prepping for, though mine will have turquoise instead of red: Windmills-in-the-Night.jpg

Well, posting once every three days isn't AWFUL, but it's not what I had planned on.

So far, so good. Got a quick walk, some yoga, and a few workouts in. And I got my cake and cupcakes done. Wanna see? Of course you do! Unfortunately, I have an early start tomorrow and the url stuff isn't playing nice. So Pictures come tomorrow!

Short post before I head off to work, but I didn't get home in time to post at all last night. Here (hopefully) are the photos of my minion baking!

So far, so good, but the weather over this past weekend kind of derailed some of the walking plans. We had wind gusting to 50mph, and after working out in that for 9 hours, I wasn't about to go out in the cold and the dust again. So it was workouts and yoga for this geek.

The Minion project is over, and was very well received. NO projects for pay this week. I need a break.

I did get into the Teacher's Academy for the coming summer semester, though, so that's awesome news. One step closer to being the high-school biology Ms. Frizzle. Earrings and all.

Speaking of biology…I got my seeds in their trays for the summer garden, and a rabbit's worth of teeth in a jar of peroxide to whiten up.

As far as this last week's score….2 walks, 4 workouts, 4 sessions of yoga, and 6/7 days of DOING something. Given the awful weather and the 6/7 days of some kind of exercise, we're going to call this an A-.

This week: going to do the West Rim on Thursday unless I have to stick around and mind the solar panel dudes. They started putting in the setup and rack for 26 panels that will power the house and then some.

Trimming and seaming all the bonus blocks from the quilt I'm working on. The clipped-off bits workup into little 3" square jewelboxes and I adore them.

Mostly just quilting and cooking this week. That's what I call a break!

By some miracle, I'm still here. And still working hard. I've just been forgetting to post. Short, short post today because it's time for bed, but a big thank you to Sooshie for reminding me!

So here is the final standing:

20 out of 18 walks.

23 out of 12 workouts.

21 out of 18 yoga practices

35 out of 36 days of DOING something.

With those numbers and the resulting 98% score, I give myself a grade of A!

I also didn't know that the post I wrote early last week about what I've been up to never made it to the actual thread, so here's the short version.

I hiked the Rim, but didn't take pictures because it was wet and slippery and I would have probably broken my camera.

I hiked the Gorge a couple of times, and saw plenty of goats and a few eagles.

I did a lot of walking between my house and the end of the family property a mile and a half downriver.

I planted my seeds for my garden, and they are almost ready to be transplanted outside.

Washed and waxed my car.

Rotated the tires on my car, and did an oil change/oil filter/lube job.

Got all 189 triads of blocks turned into strips for Stooshie's quilt.

I almost did the Rim again, but there was a suicide out there and it's crawling with people. PLus, there's been a lot of rain and I'm not chancing wet clay on the edge of a few hundred foot drop.

I'm planning a trip to Bandolier Monument, hopefully this week. Cliff dwellings!
