karinajean fights to be fit: unlocking strength, endurance, and skill

Recommended Posts

yesterday was pretty much a wash.

I didn't do my handstands,

I didn't exercise,

I stayed up SUPER late and had to wake up SUPER early this morning.

I had drinks! and cupcakes! and an impromptu birthday party!

I DID drink plenty of water.

I had 7 or so glasses of water to my 2 cups of caffeine.

then of course after that I had about 3 drinks,

so the next 4 glasses of water I am not counting at all.

but I beat my ratio!

today I did practice handstands.

I can get my feet up to about chest height, but my shoulder wasn't stacking right and it felt pretty strained.

I held it for 45 sec and then again for 20 sec.

tonight is tkd!

Sounds like you're off to a fantastic start! I've been wondering, have you commented on the threads of other Level 1's? It'll help you keep track and you can help others stay motivated as well.

Thanks Red!

I'm following a bunch of people I've met through the academy, and I'm trying to chime in here and there. I can tell already it's going to be super tough to find the balance between participating in this group like I *want to* (friend opportunity!) and actually getting my work done during the day and getting to bed on time at night. it's amazing how active the group is.

I'm officially declaring birthday week OVER. It's amazing what you'll let yourself get away with just because it's your BIRTHDAY WEEK. BUT. I don't want my first week of the challenge to just be status quo so I need to get my focus back on actually accomplishing exercise!

that said, I don't want to beat myself up. I did start handstand practice. that's new and awesome. I did focus on drinking lots of water. Also new! man, seriously, I was drinking maybe 30 oz of water before, and just lots of tea and a fair amount of coffee. hitting that 2:1 ratio is a big deal for me. so, first week won't entirely be a wash, but it is not as gung ho as I want to be.

today I'm working at home so I'm going to take a lunch run. I NEVER do that, so today seems like a good time to start.

I'll also do handstand practice. My husband is working at home too, maybe I can get a picture out of it.

Tonight is knitting club but before I go see my knitting ladies I want to pull the carburetor out of my motorcycle so I can take it to my buddy to have it cleaned out (I can't get the screws out of it or I'd try it myself).

On the way to knitting club I want to stop by the sporting goods store and get a pair of grappling/wrap gloves for tkd and boxing class.

this weekend I want to go for a run at least one day. probably just on sunday, because sat. will be boxing class and tkd class. (if no boxing, then I'll run sat. too). must move my body both days this weekend, either martial arts, running, or a hike or something.

and then next week back to bodyweight workouts and I will add in running on alternate days.

I've given myself the week off from BW workouts because my husband has a sore toe, but I can't only do this when he's able to. I need to do it when he's not available too. it's just so much easier to roll out of bed at 5AM when he does too! Maybe I'll just make him get up then. he could stand for getting to work a little earlier if he's not going to exercise. (I AM SURE THIS WILL GO OVER VERY WELL. (no seriously it probably will. (((maybe mostly very well.)))

my today plans make for a VERY AMBITIOUS SCHEDULE.

So I'd better get to work so I can skive off early and do the things I want to do.

so this morning I hopped on my withings scale and it told me (like it always does) that I am at 40ish percent fat.

dudes, I know this is not true.

but for some reason the withings scale is horrible at telling me how much I am fat-composed.

so I got out the calipers this morning and checked and according to the complicated empirical formulas I am 28.8% fat.

so I went onto my withings scale website and told it I was a MAN instead of a WOMAN.

now the withings scale thinks my percent fat measurement from today is 29.2.

whiskey tango foxtrot, withings scale?

you are so mean to me.

why do you hate the ladies?!

I will always be a man to you.

other things:

195.1 lbs / 5'11"

today I'm going to the dojo to see if boxing class is on!

so nice to have it just 15 min. away from home.

and then if boxing is on, then weapons class will be on!

and then after that tae kwon do for sure. that is most definitely on.

oh and did I mention? I did go for a run yesterday, 2.5 ish miles in just under 10min/mile pace. NICE JOB, ME!

and handstand practice!

here is a picture of upside down me.

Hi!

Thanks for the happy birthday!

Right now for running I'm redoing the first 6 weeks of the hal higdon 10K novice program. I did this last november while training for a turkey trot, and I was really surprised by how effective it was. I was a doubter! no longer! on May 23rd we're going away for a week-long motorcycle vacation tour up to Maine, and I'm bringing my running shoes (another plus for more minimalist shoes - they fit into tiny saddlebags) and trying to fit in some short (2-3 miles) runs while I'm up there. THEN, my plan is to work on speedwork by starting the hal higdon 5K intermediate training program. there's some interval work in there and I'll have to goose around my other bodyweight workouts so all the puzzle pieces stitch together, but that's my general plan.

I'm glad to see that you're having a blast! That's always a good sign!

:)

blasts are here to be had!

You've had a great start!  Keep it up in week 2, and let us know if you need any help.

Thanks Hazard! I was thinking about this before - I'm good at being totally balls out and exercising all the time, but I'm bad at starting. I guess that's the point of the challenge though, right? I've tried to start an ambitious exercise plan several times in the last couple of months but never got it together before this week.

yesterday was GOOD.

I went to the dojo and boxing class WAS on. it was on for about 2 hours. that was intense. no weapons class, I think because there was a visitor in class and the instructor didn't want to arm her. (really, only higher belts should take weapons class.)

THEN tae kwon do and one of our younger black belt candidates taught and he was a HARSH TASK MASTER for an 8 year old. it was good, though.

and then I went home and played games on my iphone all afternoon. no carburetor pulling. just an hour or so of IncobotoMini.

Well, I also did handstand practice. I did one high wall plank for 30 seconds and one lower wall plank for 30 seconds.

and then! burgers and beers with our amazing excellent friends and I will not lie, I absolutely told myself to drink all the beer because I had burned roughly 900 calories at boxing/tkd, but I still tried to make a good choice for the dinner (not crazy good - I still had the french dip sandwich - but better than the shepherds pie or fish and chips, for example). all in all my calories were a net deficit for the day by a bunch - food in: 2201, budget: 1844, exercise -983. (doesn't it drive you crazy that calories are so overly precise and they're totally based on empirical formulas, estimates of metabolism and lifestyle, and eyeballing the food we eat?)

today!

I got up and went for a run. I really didn't want to but I DID want to be able to have a nice easter dinner, whatever that might end up being, with my husband. I did my 3 mile loop around my village and finished in 30:13 min. I am really pleased with that! I worked HARD and I didn't stop. I wanted to stop. but I didn't.

today is carburetor pulling and grocery shopping and cleaning up the house day. and then back to work tomorrow, but maybe more importantly: back to my BIG PLANS for exercising, which looks like this:

please excuse all the scribbles. my week off and failure to start running several weeks ago really uglied up the calendar. but look at all those great "x's" where I got done what I said I would!

garjan - awesome! I work for a consulting firm in NJ that mostly does remediation work (at least in our office).

That's awesome! There seem to be a lot of consulting firms in NJ. I'm going down a different route (manufacturing) after I graduate but remediation is pretty cool too.

Also I love your calendar idea. Looks like a great visual guide to keep you on top of scheduled workouts.

Starting the day with a little crowing:

I FINALLY figured out how to do inverted rows at home - we have a pull-up bar in our laundry room doorway, and if you put your feet on the dryer you can pull yourself up to the pull-up bar all inverted-row-like.

THAT SAID, it's pretty scary because you're so high up, and the first time I only did 7 or so before I got scared that I would be all muscle fatigued and fall onto my head.

today I did 3 sets of 10! I was tired at 7, so I stopped and then I said to myself: this is bull, I can do 3 more. so I got right back up there and did the last 3.

They're not terribly wonderful, and I'm not getting up as high as I should on all of them, but this is a big YAY!

Yay! TKD, knitting, and strength for the win!

When is your belt test?!

My test is June 7th - so I'm planning to work as hard as I can during the challenge, then go away for a week on vacation, then comeback and work out any kinks before the test. I'm going to have to practice while on vacation too - but there will be time for that.

Week 1 Results!

* Endurance - Hal Higdon training program - I started running on Friday of Week 1 and fit in 2 runs total. Didn't quite make it to 3x this week, but I'm ok with that.

* Strength - bodyweight workouts 3x a week and daily handstand practice - I hit BW 3x and I did handstands on M/T/W/Th/F/S. I missed Sunday handstands.

* Skill - tkd all the time. I attended 3 of 3 possible tkd classes, plus an epically long boxing class on sat. I didn't practice my forms at home at all, that needs to improve.

Key Mission tools:

Drink more water - I did manage to maintain 2x water to 1x caffeinated beverages all week long. It's not 100 oz of water a day, but it's way more than I was drinking, and close to 80 oz.

Sleep at 9:30 - um not really. this week I was nodding off on the couch a few nights. week 2 I need to do better.

More vegetables and clean protein - Not my best here either. week 2 needs improvement.

Also: I took measurements,

I ate more candy and cupcakes than I should have,

my weight stayed fairly much the same.

Here's to a Week 2 full of improvements!

Congrats on improvements! And you should try to find a way to not eat as much of the bad stuff as possible! This will be key to your weight loss.

I am in love with week 2 so far!

Monday we got up and started the Academy Bodyweight Brigade Level 2 Week 4 - we were on week 4 before BIRTHDAY WEEK so we are redoing it before moving on.

I had some kind of protein craving on Monday, and I ended up eating the chicken salad out of the insides of some leftover sandwiches from a working lunch in the afternoon. That kind of put me over the top on calories, but in general, not by much. According to LoseIt I ate 42% fat/32% carbs/26% protein - and my actual protein intake was about 150g, which is I think roughly 1g/lean bodyweight mass for me. Still a lot of fat, because of the nature of the chicken salad/tuna salad and also all the butter I had with dinner. oh butter, I love you so much.

Tuesday I got up and went for a run. YOU GUYS. THE SUN IS SORTA UP ENOUGH AT 530 THAT I DON'T NEED A HEADLAMP ANYMORE. this is huge. SO HUGE. what a pleasure to run without a headlamp.

I did my 2.5 miles in about 25 minutes, YAY.

Tuesday night was TKD and I had special attention from the instructor, she worked with me to go through things I was unsure of so we hit 3 of the upper belt (but not black belt) forms that I hadn't learned at my old school, and then we worked through the 4 step, 3 step, 2 step, 1 step, and 0 step. also we fine-tuned one of my other forms. I LOVE forms. YAY.

Food was good, I stayed under my calories. We had fancy biz lunch so again I ate the insides out of the tuna and chicken sandwiches. ALSO, I'm doing this food ordering thing called "wholeshare" which is like a food coop but you order and pay online, and then someone splits it at their house and you pick it up - yesterday I learned that FOUR POUNDS OF ARUGULA is like, a pillow sized amount of arugula. so for dinner after tae kwon do we had leftover indian food and I treated the arugula like rice. yum. also, spicy! 36% fat/44% carbs/20% protein.

This morning we did BW workout and then cleaned the house up before I left for work (ONE HOUR LATE). for breakfast I had fried eggs on top of arugula. Tonight we're celebrating my older stepdude's birthday - number 15! oh lord. with pizza and chocolate cream pie. I will eat lots of arugula, and just a little pizza. because I HAVE TO. 4 lbs of arugula seemed like a really good idea but I'm going to eat so much of it this week. That said, I did bring a jar (probably about 3 cups) of arugula for lunch today, and packed up 2 more jars for the rest of the week lunches. as much as I'm daunted by the sheer quantities of arugula that need eating, I do love it. I love that you can eat it raw or wilted or outright cooked. it's delicious. I hope I still feel this way by the weekend, after eating arugula multiple meals every single day.

High five to you, Week 2! you are awesome!

2.5 miles in 25 minutes, that is excellent time!!

I'm working on some bodyweight work-outs this challenge as well - but mine are very beginner's level, so I am in awe of your awesomeness at Level 2.

That post just has so much WIN in it!! I love the positive attitude. I'm glad you are getting creative with all that arugula, I would be totally stumped by 4 lbs, lol.

By the way, if you'd ever like to meet some other nerdy runners, or get some support on any of your goals, feel free to stop by our Tavern or Base Camp - you'll find the links in my signature.

Keep it up!! I'll be back to see where all that arugula goes!

Thanks Kailer! the running thing is a long-slow-journey. I've been running 5Ks in about 31-33 minutes for a long time, and I'd like to get that under 30 minutes! that's a summer goal, though, or at least a goal for after my black belt test.

the bw stuff - I've been doing the academy bodyweight stuff on and off since october, and it's amazing to see the changes. I mean, I still can't do an actual non-knee pushup, but I'm getting better!

this is primarily how I'm dealing with the arugula.

All the Arugula All the Time

had arugula 3x yesterday - with breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Dinner was birthday pizza for stepdude and I piled arugula on top as my stepdudes looked on in horror. It was delicious.

this morning I had eggs over toast and arugula and should have taken a photo!

Running

up early for a 2 mile run - completed in 19:12. GO ME. I'm totally proud of this. I'm glad i did an early run because it is flippin windy outside now!

Today

I'm working from home because I noticed on my way out that my sweet cat Ella Olga Babygoat Torturekitty Murderclaws Tip Grundzilla was limping on her hind legs and I freaked out a little and am going to take her to the vet tonight. HOPEFULLY she was just freaking out at the outdoor cats taunting her and damaged herself a little against the window or door by flinging herself against them, but I want to be certain. So my challenge today is to not eat all the things at home. I want to, they're delicious. but really, what I"m going to do is make a nice mushroom and arugula dish all sauteed and yum, and eat it with potentially another fried egg.
