Laura's Nut Up or Shut Up Challenge

Recommended Posts

I highly recommend it! Right now I'm using up my 5 free classes (which is awesome since most places give you one) This place is slightly better for pricing than most of the MMA gyms around. It's $80/month unlimited classes (Muay thai technique, advanced and kickbox conditioning or open mat). Most places around me are $120+/month so it's a little better. BUT the other places also offer other classes... like jui jitsu, etc. I'm still going to check out the Krav Maga studios to see what the pricing is like for those before I make my final decision :)

I can't believe that for all my love of zombie everything I had never heard of runforyourlives! I am so excited!

@laura - muay thai sounds so awesome. you'll have to tell us all about it as you go to more classes! and hooray for mwods! obvi, lesson learned, mobility is a *key* part of building strength!

AND runforyourlives... pretty sure a few people from boston are signing up - you should get your southeast peeps to do it too, and then we can have a training/challenge thread or something wicked cool like that.

That's pretty brilliant, actually. I did post it in the Southeast Meet Up thread... hmmmmm

[Pardon the hijack Laura but my ego needs boostin] Thank you Bondgirl, glad you like it. That quote is how I look at life. I don't wanna be a saint, a martyr, a war hero, or a hippie, I just want to be human. I think being human is plenty perfect. We just gotta figure out how to do it.

I couldn't agree more!! Here's to being human!

Ha! Thanks! That sounds like exactly what I need! Interesting that you found that.. I was reading some articles on lifting and one of them said that women tend to underestimate our weight lifting ability. It said take what you think you can do and add 10 lbs. Now that I've been consistently lifting I wonder if I can get away with that... I might try it tomorrow.

This was definitely true for me. I just benched 70lbs last night, something I never thought I could do at this stage, and it's because I told myself to "just try it." It works!

Okay, so after flooding your thread, I have one more thing (that's it, I swear!).

Guuuuuurl - you are kicking AYASS! Keep up the damn fine work!

Update 9/22

  • Yoga-Check.
  • Breakdancing-Check. I researched. I attempted to toprock (fail) and also attempted to do some footwork on the ground (also fail). As I learn more about breakdancing I realize it's going to be quite the undertaking. Honestly, I'm not sure that I'm that into it. Then again, such a daunting task does appeal to my nut up side... I will be thinking about this.
  • Headstand- My body was not feeling it last night. I got up but made no progress in holding.
  • Everyone Handstand Challenge- I attempted a handstand last night but it was a big ol' fail. I realized that I'm actually a little bit afraid to throw my body up when my head is not on the ground (does that make any sense?). Given the trouble I had with my headstand I didn't want to practice too much without a spotter. I might see if someone can help me tonight at the gym after I lift (which might also be a bad idea).

So, thread peepers... any suggestions or advice on handstands? (Yes, I've been to beastskills.com-many times).

Today:

Going to get my lift on tonight with my bff. Can't wait! Attacking the dreaded deadlift again. Wonder if I can up my weight.

Well, a good place to start with headstands is to do a pike press. And as the guy demonstrates in the video, you can make progressions with them. Just keep going up and up and up, and eventually you'll find that you just can't help but be vertical.

Thanks!! That is helpful. Headstands I'm okay with-oddly enough... I think it's the dangling head in a handstand that freaks me out a bit haha But those look like they might help me out on this quest. Good call!

Figured I'd update for today...today..

9/22

Lift-check. Added 5 more lbs to my deadlift. Increased everything but my overhead press. Not a bad day at the gym.

BFF is digging our workouts and plans to join me for the conceivable future-woot! She also experienced the immense hunger after our last lift. Glad it wasn't just me!

I haven't tried the pike press into a handstand yet... tempted to but I might save it for tomorrow. Also, forgot to try it at the gym with a spotter :(

Everything else is going well, on target.

Muay Thai is pretty insane. I did a little bit a while back, and would really like to try it again as I get more fit. The school that I tested out had a pretty huge emphasis on conditioning (not sure if it's the same everywhere), so it will probably be fit really well alongside your NF goals. Many bruises though...

If the class I did is any indication then my conditioning will be through the roof. And really, aside from being able to kick butt I need something to keep up my conditioning from boxing (now that I don't go). I worked hard for that! I don't want to lose it! haha

Massive bruise on my shin is going away now.. thankfully. Can't wait to get another one on Tuesday :)

Yes, it is!! And it is SO GLORIOUS. My aim for this week is to get to bed a little earlier than I have been (which, sadly isn't very late to begin with).

Love watching your progress. Keep it up!

Thanks! :D

Our class is unconventional but we do mostly the standard hatha/vinyasa yoga styles. Occasionally some longer holds in yin style, but mostly we're flowin'. And I love me some flow.
