Laura's Nut Up or Shut Up Challenge

Recommended Posts

Thanks guys!!!!

Okay, so week 6 has started (and I'm a little off since I had Monday off hahahaha). Here's where I stand coming in to week 6:

Fitness Goals:

-Be able to do 1 unassisted pull up: sure to be the hardest for me to accomplish. Still working on it..not terribly hopeful

-Be able to hold headstand for 15 seconds COMPLETED

-Practice Yoga twice a week Twice some weeks, once some weeks...dependent on how fatigued I felt. So, knocked some off in lieu of listening to body. Chalking this up to eyes too big for my fitness stomach

-Decrease body fat Not sure..measurements soon. Some things seem to have improved. Some not.

-Get deadlift to 100 lbs Currently at 90. Busting out 100 tomorrow, damnit

-Try out beginner Krav Maga class. Completing Tonight!

Diet Goals:

-Eat out no more than 3 times during challenge. Less is preferable. I went over once or twice. Not sure, but one was last night at the Nerd Fitness meet up...so... yeah

-Do not partake in office treats. SUCCESS!

-Grains permitted maximum of twice a day. Only in morning or directly following a workout. Aiming for once a day but finding it difficult to eat enough right now, which brings me to my next goal: Only over two times, I believe.

-EAT MORE. Ever since I started my lifting program I have been nonstop hungry. I had to eat a lot before but this is ridiculous. Success! Perpetual hunger pwnd

-Allowed one cheat day per week. No cheat meals on non scheduled days. Mostly--minus one or two cheats not on cheat days

Life Goals:

-Save more. Aim to add 30% of current savings to account by end of 6 weeks. COMPLETED!

-Make use of overpriced but ample health insurance (specifically: dentist. Optimistic: add vision) Not yet

-Visit my sister and new niece at least 3 times during challenge COMPLETED!

-Do at least one mind fitness activity/day. Ironically enough, forgot to do some.

-Research and implement beginning break dancing COMPLETED! And break dancing is not for me.

Additional thing(s):

-Remain cognizant of posture. Especially when sitting. I'll give myself a woot here

-Play with my kitties more often.additional woot

-Take items bagged for donation to donation center not yet

Annnnnnd yesterday's update:

Did not complete anything additional but I did get in a workout: skipping routine followed by box jumps, skiers (?), some other thing like those and some pseudo pull ups. Then went out to eat (:() with Atlanta area Rebels and had a lovely time (despite the fact that I look very surly in the one photo taken).

Today is Krav and Yoga. My calves need the yoga..no bueno.

Finishin strong! =P

And I'm with Yodie, Krav Maga sounds like it'd be a good time and workout. I'm interested to see how it goes for you.

Krav was AWESOME. I missed part of the warm up signing in and such but when I got in this is what we did:

80 split jumps

20 squats

10 jump lunges

Repeat 3 times

hold plank until everyone's caught up

20 push ups

20 superduper superman things with a partner

Then we got into pad work. I now have a lovely bruised knuckle. I've never hit pads so hard without wraps or gloves (some people had wraps on.. I would definitely wrap next time).

Pad work: punches and palm strikes

Tabata punching drill

Pad work: kicks

Defense training..learning how to get out of a choke and attack. We very literally choked each other and had to get out of it. It was kind of awesome (and by kind of I mean SO FN AWESOME).

Then we split in two groups. Group A stood with their eyes closed as Group B ran around the room attacking them with chokes. Then we switched.

That was about it..I think.. Anyhow, now I'm torn. Krav Maga or Muay Thai? Krav definitely has the more useful skills but I enjoyed Muay Thai more. They're equally priced but Krav is in a slightly less accessible location and requires a contract. Muay Thai is right next to where I lift and does not. Given that I'm moving (and I'm not sure where yet) I'm hesitant to sign a contract... also, I'm just a big ol' commitment phobe.

So yeah...

Yoga was fun yesterday but too intense. I ended up being the only person so we worked on lots of awkward back bending, bridging, inversion stuff.. Fun and I love it.. but good lord.

Everything else for yesterday was on par.

oh my word, krav sounds SO awesome, and mega intense. all the stuff you did before pad work blew my mind. i'm not sure i'd have much left after that. kudos to you, and i can see why that's a tough call. is that the place you bought a coupon package for? (aka, do you still get to go again before making up your mind)

Incidentally, I was in exactly the same boat a little while ago - choosing between KM and MT, with pricing being equal but KM being slightly less accessible. Weird. In any case, I vote for MT because you like it better. I think it also gets the edge for sheer badassery.

Sadly, I do not. Muay Thai has the big bunch of classes.. I have 3 left there.

Wow, that's really funny! I think I'm leaning towards Muay Thai... and I might just see what I can learn about self defense via other sources and get my boyfriend to let me practice on him (it'll be good for him since he's a cop and aspiring cop fighting blogger). Then maybe revisit Krav at a later date.

Oh, and Scotticus, your new pic is awesome :)

Call me crazy, but I think that learning how to break people with your fists, elbows, and knees counts (at least a little) as self defense :)

Very true. And we used a lot of that stuff in our post choke attacks last night. Also, the kicks were exactly the same kicks you learn in Muay Thai...soooo yeah.. it would be the disarming someone with a gun, getting out of chokes stuff I would want to learn.. Yeah, I think Muay is it. Hooray for decisions! And hooray for input from my squad!

Yeah, definitely Muay Thai. You ever hear about the Thai Boxing champion who got robbed at knifepoint?

No - because that doesn't freaking happen. Muay Thai, taught effectively and sparred with regularly, has a metric ton of value in fighting and self-defense. It's not a bad choice.

Muay Thai. Oh yeah. Nothin' like kicking the sh*t out of each other. Slay 'em, Laura!

That is my goal in life :-D

So.. this is the end of my first challenge :( I'm sad to see it go!

I'll have to take a look and see how I did. I didn't actually get around to lifting 100lbs to meet my dead lift goal but I know I can. At least for a few times. I leveled up to 95 lbs Thursday even while exhausted so I'd say 100 is in the bag (and that nifty calculator seems to think I got it,too haha).

Saturday's lift was canceled because my car broke down on my way to the gym. Hooray! It's in the shop now so I'm hoping it'll come out okay (otherwise I'm in trouble). I did some bodyweight stuff at home before I had to get ready for a wedding that afternoon. Did some squats, push ups, lunges and dips.

sorry to hear about the car, but i love the determination to work out regardless. hopefully it helped worked off some of the stress of a misbehaving car as well. :)

and yes, i'm sad the challenge is over too! i can't decide if it went by fast or slow - seems like it started forever ago. but having awesome teammates made it so much more worthwhile!

Agreed! I'm glad you encouraged me to join the squad. I'm not sure I would have being a hermitty loner and all. But hooray for awesomeness! And Team Powerthirst!!

Its been great watching you improve over the weeks, I'm glad you were apart of my squad. Onward to challenge #2!

+1. I did the hermitty loner thing my first challenge. It wasn't as fun.

Neither of you come off as the hermitty type though... haha.
