You Are The Only Exception - Challenge 5

I have had this song by Paramore in my head for weeks!! I think it is a sign that I need to make more exceptions for myself. Life is not all or nothing! Mistakes will happen, the only failure is failing to try!

MAIN QUEST:

To hit my goal range of 125-135 and do it in a healthy way!

Goals (diet and fitness related) that will help me achieve Main Quest:

I am taking some advice and am NOT making this challenge about the scale. This will be hard for me, so bear with me!

1. No gluten - The Only Exception: if a drug rep brings pizza or Costa Vida (this amazing Mexican restaurant with wonderful homemade flour tortillas!!) [Don't worry... this RARELY happens... like a couple times a YEAR!]

Grading:

A: 40-42 days

B: 35-39 days

C: 29-34 days

D: 24-28 days

F: <24 days

Ability to earn 3 CON points.

2. No sugar - The Only Exception: yogurt, fruit, and a little creamer in my coffee.

A: 40-42 days

B: 35-39 days

C: 29-34 days

D: 24-28 days

F: <24 days

Ability to earn 3 CON points.

3. Keep It Simple Stupid:  I have like 1,000 apps on my phone (Ok, not really anymore, because I was just able to upgrade my Iphone 4 (no S) to an iPhone 5S for a freaking DOLLAR!! Traded in my 4. So, I decided to NOT put all the apps I have downloaded in the past onto my phone... even though I am a bit of an app whore!) anyway... I am going to actually USE some of them!

Each week I will use the following apps 3x per week:

1. Zen Labs Legs Trainer

2. Zen Labs Butts Trainer (hehe)

3. Zen Labs Abs Trainer

4. Zen Labs Push-up Trainer

There are 3 Exercise Length settings: 5 min, 7.5 min, and 10 min

Week 1: all 4 apps: 5 min each, Easy

Week 2: all 4 apps: 7.5 min each, Easy

Week 3: all 4 apps: 10 min each, Easy

Week 4: all 4 apps: 5 min each, Medium

Week 5: all 4 apps: 7.5 min each, Medium

Week 6: all 4 apps: 10 min each, Medium

The Only Exception: If I injure myself or am really sick.

Grading:

KISS:

A: 17-18 days

B: 15-16 days

C: 13-14 days

D: 11-12 days

F: <12 days

Ability to earn 3 STA 3 STR point.

3) PICK YOUR SIDE QUESTS

Grading:

A: 5-6 books

B: 3-4 books

It might be silly of me, but the first thing that jumps to my mind is the line from Mallrats "Fly Fatass, Fly!" That's what I'd totally name a challenge based of Jay and Silent Bob.

Yes.  Funfact: My best friend orlando and I ARE jay and silent bob.  I wore the black shorts and the jacket, beard, shorter, said very little but was profoundly wise, while Orlando was the tall, skinny, loudmouth.  Worked well together.

So, this week I am going to work hard on coming up with things for meals and snacks... I usually get pretty hungry around 3 or 4 in the afternoon (this totally made me start singing 9 in the Afternoon lol)

Anyway... I need to come up with some good, inexpensive snacks that are healthy... otherwise I WILL eat the chocolate or granola bars they have at work which are full of added sugar!

Also, I have an abundance of alternative flours that I need to use before it just all goes bad!! Thinking about making some gluten-free Bisquick... then I can use it for stuff like taco bake...

I actually made dinner tonight... and it wasn't just pan-cooked meat and some sort of veggie and potatoes(for X... he hates veggies and I don't want him to JUST eat meat!), I actually made a recipe LOL

I started out with this gluten-free Bisquick recipe:

1 1/2 cups white rice flour (or brown rice flour or a mixture of both) [i doubled the recipe, so I used 1.5 c white rice flour and 1.5 c brown rice flour]

1 1/2 cups potato starch (or cornstarch, if potato intolerant)  [doubled to 3 cups]

3 Tablespoons sugar (or evaporated cane juice for refined-sugar-free)  [Didn't add sugar at all.]

1 Tablespoon + 2 teaspoons gluten free baking powder (Rumford, Featherweight is corn-free) [Doubled to 2T + 4t]

1 1/2 teaspoons xanthan gum (or guar gum, for corn-free) [Doubled to 3t]

2 teaspoons fine sea salt [Doubled to 4t]

Instructions: In a large bowl, whisk together all ingredients; sift the mixture four times. Store in an air-tight container use as a substitute for any recipe calling for gluten free bisquick.

Then I used this recipe for Gluten-Free Impossible Bacon Cheeseburger Pies:

1 lb 90% lean ground beef [i doubled everything because I wanted to make 2 pans of jumbo muffins. Oh am it definitely wasn't 90% lean... oops.]
1 large onion diced [Nope... didn't have an onion]
2 strips turkey bacon, diced [Nope, have no bacon]
1 tbsp steak sauce [sigh... nope... used Bragg's Liquid Aminos instead]
2 tbsp ketchup
2 oz low fat cheddar, grated [Actually used pepper jack cheese]
¾ cup gluten free Bisquick
¾ cup milk [Nope, out of milk... used water and it was fine!]
2 eggs
salt and pepper to taste

Oven at 375°F. Cook the meat in a skillet. (If you have onion and bacon, stick it in there!) Remove from heat (or unplug if you are using an electric skillet like me...). Add in steak sace and ketchup and cheese. For the batter, in a medium bowl using a fork or whisk, mix the Bisquick, milk and eggs together until well blended but don’t over mix. Spoon just under a tablespoon [this was more for me, since I am using BIG muffin tins!!] of the mixture into each well of the greased muffin tin.  Evenly divide the ground meat mixture between the 12 cups. Then evenly divide the remaining batter over the meat mixture.  It will work out to just over a tablespoon of batter on top of each. [unless you are using BIG muffin tins.] Bake them for 30 minutes or until the tops are golden and a toothpick inserted comes out clean.  Cool for five minutes then use a small knife to completely loosen the sides before removing them from the pan.  Serve with your favorite garnishes.

YUM!! Seriously!

Another option to looking at healthy snacks is to also analyze your mid-day meal and figure out if there's a way to help make that last longer throughout the day, maybe focus on getting in ingredients that help fill you up more, or increase the calories of the meal. It's obviously not the only option out that, but it is one possibility that can be looked into. Of course if you're always getting hungry at 3 or 4 it might be less about what you've eaten the whole day and more psychological trigger style stuff, and perhaps just trying to cut out the snacking at that time for a while (and trying to deal with the pangs for a little while) might resolve the issue as well. It's all about figuring out what your body actually needs and wants and what can work for you.

Hmmm definitely something to think about... I tend to bring leftovers to work, or eat what the reps bring... if I don't bring food, and the reps don't bring anything I can eat, I tend to eat very little, but when I always bring food and eat more, I still tend to get that snacky feeling around 3 or 4... so maybe I will try to ignore it.

Spoiler

There is never a sudden revelation, a complete and tidy explanation for why it happened, or why it ends, or why or who you are. You want one and I want one, but there isn't one. It comes in bits and pieces, and you stitch them together wherever they fit, and when you are done you hold yourself up, and still there are holes and you are a rag doll, invented, imperfect. And yet you are all that you have, so you must be enough. There is no other way.
