Seriously though, rest this close to your marathon is probably a good idea, you won't be gaining any conditioning this close to your race. Taper's suck but they serve a purpose

Mm, my knee isn't any better - in fact it's worse - from 5 days of inactivity. I'm going to be exercising a bit, but not too strenuously, over the next 3 days then have a week of solid rest.

So today was:

Portuguese practice - Earwigging two Portuguese phone conversations and texting Mrs 18ck about my discoveries.

Training - When I got home I did a light jog down to the rowing club where I did 21 minutes of ergo (a lacklustre 5k) and some weights (curls and rows only - no squats or leg work until the knee sorts itself out). Dinner was very nice and nutritious and I am eating more-or less on the pony-acquisition plan with the exception of some nuts, which I justified in the basis that I needed protein after lifting those heavy, heavy things.

And the stretching, the stretching and the rolling. The rolling, rolling, rolling, rawhide.

As I said to KG, the knee's no better but still not affecting my running. My toe is better though, and having established that it's not a running injury per se, I'm going to do some more running over the next few days to keep myself ticking over and also to test out some gels I was thinking of using, with a full rest from 1 week out.

I actually had one at my last pet sitting gig.

Smart, long and tall, ate all the time, and never stop giving me swirlies when I didn't get it what it wanted.

When you say full rest do you mean truly no exercise for a week? (I've never done anything like your race so this I know nothing about preparing for it.)

2016 goals: Hit goal weight. Build muscle.

2015 goals: Get stronger, stop loathing squats and get better at them - DONE!!!

Which running gels do you like?  I have stuck with the Power Bar Gel (Gu is so gross to me), and I also like those jelly bean things.  Have you had those?  They are great.  Although the kind with caffeine kind of scare me.  Good luck with your marathon, I'll be cheering for you!  I have a 10K the following day.  Piece of cake compared to what you're doing!

Pretty much, yes. I walk and cycle a fair bit anyway, just to get around, but I won't be exerting myself in any major way. The idea is to let the legs recover from the battering they've had in training, so they have a bit of springiness on the day. I'm also going to have a sports massage on the Tuesday before to loosen everything up.

I don't really like the idea of fake foods in general so I've only ever had two, and most of the first one ended up all over my hands, t-shirt, face, etc. I've got some isogels and I just want to make sure I can open two, swallow them all and carry on without feeling ill. That will leave me with 3 for the big day, which will have to be enough. I usually use those Lucozade tablets washed down with water on a long run but this race is longer, hillier and probably hotter than my normal runs and there are only 4 water stations so I think extra fluids + salts are called for.

I always found taking them with water (i.e. at water stops) helped immensely. I try and use a combination of gels, chews and gatorade to maximize the glucose/fructose uptake in your stomach and prevent overdosing on one product/flavour. Also, my stomach likes to have something real to chew on so I've taken a granola bar on my last few long races, they aren't as calorie dense but it helps break up the constant barrage of sugar.

Might be something in that. I've tried jelly babies in a race though, and just wanted to spew so I'm definitely keeping it light.

So today after Flyer19 's music lesson we headed off on an epic mission involving a huge bike ride (must have been about 12 miles in total), a horse riding lesson (for her) a short run (for me) and then back down to ground level for a birthday party. Flyer was great (as usual) braving nettles, brambles, mud, hills and floods on her bike and difficult situations (party full of strangers) and having a really good day anyway. I didn't do too badly for an old fella either.

For the last few days, cake, doughnuts, brownies and various other treats have been positively hurling themselves at me and I have dodged them all like a chocolate-declining boss.

Slightly lacking in the language-learning department, unfortunately but I'm not seeing it as a huge problem at the moment.

Out of interest, re. Straws: are you significantly shorter than flyer? Not casting aspersions, will just need to rejigger the image in my head of my NF chums.

Yes, I'm a hobbit in real life, but my wife is a sky titan, so Flyer averages out at human size.

Today I got up at the crack of dawn and sculled down to the pink house (that's like 7k or something, I believe) and then did some curls and stuff in the weight room. I then spent the rest of the day eating, reading, playing Labyrinth with Flyer19 and generally relaxing. It was a lovely Father's Day. Now for a week of grim awfulness and medical appointments and no running, followed by a day of self-destruction in Hampshire.
