Hey everyone! I just finished my first challenge over in Level 1. While I am a bit of an assassin at heart (specifically a circus aerialist), my focus this summer is to prepare for my first 10k so I'll be training with the scouts this challenge.

Still sorting out things like attribute points and whatnot, but here's what I have so far!

Main Goal

Run 8 Miles without dying or walking

Side Quests

  • Run 15 miles per week
  • Pull up training 3 days per week
  • 5 full minutes of stretching 5 days per week (after every workout)

Life Quest

Eat all the CSA vegetables each week - no waste!

I am following a sub-65 10k training plan on Runkeeper
For pull up training I'm following the twenty pullups challenge
Handstands are done either against a wall or with a spotter, and only the time spent upside down counts

My challenge started Sunday, 6/8 just because it's easier to pull data out of RunKeeper that way.

omg yes, I have mustard greens coming out of my ears. And kale. So much kale.

This summer I am trying to blog all my recipes... mostly so I have them handy for next summer. This is our 3rd summer doing the CSA.

I only have one recipe up so far because we just started the season, but I did make some tasty saag last week. Last night I made a cheesy rice thing with collard greens but I haven't written down the recipe yet. Today I have to figure out what to do with radishes. WHO EATS RADISHES?

Anyway you can find the saag recipe at WTF CSA

I have so many radishes!! Last week, I made a "summer salad" with cucumbers and radishes (recipe http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Summer-Radish-Salad/Detail.aspx) but I took out the onions.  This week, I've mostly been putting them in salads, nothing creative.  I'll check out your blog! I want to write a blog on this for my blog but I have been mostly sprinkling the recipes I've been using on the forums here.  Let me know if you have something specific you can't find a use for!

Sub'd. I want to see how you use these veggies too. It might give me the right push to try a few new ones :)

Glad to see so many other people have trouble figuring out to do with all the veggies. I just posted the recipe for the rice-turkey-veggie thing I made last night : http://www.kellbot.com/2014/06/csa-wtf-rice-turkey-veggie-thing/

Another tool in my use-the-veggies toolbox is this ginger sauce: sarahfit.com/recipe-that-amazing-ginger-sauce-from-life-alive/
It
turns a mixture of steamed veggies + quinoa into a super delicious lunch.

As a warning, I don't keep paleo at all so my recipes might not be so helpful for those who do.

Subbed for veggies and running. I've found a good home for kale, besides my belly, is to either make kale chips or throw it into a bibimbap. Both quite tasty options.

Welcome Kelbot. I'm glad you're joining us. Running is much nicer than assassinating people.

Looking forward to following along and ogling the food porn. All I know about Kale is that it goes well in colcannon. It's er.. *ahem* not exactly low calorie though! I tend to use it as a side veggie instead, steamed and with some white pepper. Boring but it does the job

Since I know most of you are just here for the recipes... here's an enticing photo of my veggies with quinoa and ginger sauce. I used radishes, mustard greens, carrots, green onions, and some baby lettuce.

I'm so sore / tired / etc this week that I'm starting to think I'm overtraining. Right now I go to circus school twice a week, run 4 days a week, and lift 2-3 days a week. I think my body is telling me to ease up a bit. I'm replacing my handstands goal with stretching. I'm trying to work on doing the splits, but running is pulling me pretty significantly in the other direction. Yesterday I could barely touch my toes.

So stretching it is! 5 minutes of stretching 5 days a week, which includes 1 minute on each side for splits, 1 minute straddle stretch, and then 2 minutes of various other stretches (in 30 second increments). This is on top of the usual quick stretch I do after a run or workout. This stretching is for increasing flexibility rather than just trying to avoid injury.

And we're off! I'm pretty busy with work so I'm not sure how often I'll get to update, but I'll aim for at least once a week.

Today in our CSA we got: lettuce, bok choy, swiss chard, kale, turnips, and young garlic. I am most at a loss for what to do about the garlic.

We made saag again tonight and used up all the chard and bok choy. Last week I made moo shu beef lettuce cups (pictured below, which might even be mostly paleo if you leave off the rice?), and tomorrow I'm making taco salad.

@Kailer I don't have any specific program, I wish I did. I just do as much of a split as I can for a minute on each side, and then a minute of straddle stretching (sometimes against the wall, sometimes not).

Running progress

I also did my first real speed work in my running training program. 8x2min fast runs with 2 minutes of recovery in between. I was really daunted by the idea and put off my run until late morning. BAD IDEA. It was 1000% humidity today and I have never come off a run as WET as I did. BUT I DID IT! My "fast" segments were actually a lot faster than expected (I don't have any instantaneous speed info, just avg pace over the whole run). I was aiming for around 10:30/mi but ran them at more like 9:30.

I can't believe that if all goes well I'm going to be running 90 miles over the course of this challenge. I didn't run 90 miles over the course of last YEAR.

Lastly, I managed to snag a charity bib for a race in September! So I'm raising money for the city parks department in order to participate in a 10k that routes all through South Philly. I'm really excited to get to participate, though a little daunted by the idea of having to raise $500. I'm at $10 so far :D

Garlic goes in pretty much everything in our house. I guess the easy option if you're roasting something (some chicken bits?) is to break it into individual cloves and put them around it. When the food is done, the garlic will have imparted some flavour and you'll also be able to break the ends off the cloves and squeeze out the softened garlic into your mouth. That's easy because you don't have to bother chopping the garlic. You can also crush or chop it into a salad dressing, or fry it up with the onions in virtually any other dish. It's like ground black pepper: it improves everything.

If by young garlic you mean garlic scapes (aka the green bits), then you can do Garlic Scape Pesto (I've not made it before though) ;)

I do a lot of breakfast smoothies, and I shove greens in them - spinach, kale, chard, baby bok choi, etc. I'm currently adding about 3 cups of greens (when I first tried it, I did just a little bit because I thought the concept was weird.... but you don't really notice the taste of them though it does dramatically alter the colour).

So I finally googled around and found out that I have green garlic which is a little different than garlic scapes. But I found this dip recipe that looks increeeeeeeeeedible:

fava-bean-dip-1.jpg

I think I can probably find fresh fava beans at Reading Terminal Market. Otherwise I'll sub in edamame.

Here's a photo of my taco salad, which really ended up more like tortilla-less nachos. Gonna cook less beef and add more leafy greens next time. Tasty though!

I did flying trapeze today, and I'm trying to decide if I'm going to run as well. I'm a little ahead of schedule on my training plan, and it's raining. Maybe I'll put in just a few miles on the treadmill to work on breaking in my new shoes. I got them a few weeks ago but haven't run in them much because I'm not ready to jump into 5+ mile runs with them!

edit: I ran! did an easy 3.6 miles on the treadmill, half in my new shoes and half in my old ones.

While it doesn't count towards my veggie goals, there is fresh lavender in the field at the CSA farm, and I'm going to try making some lavender ice cream this weekend!

I attempted my first 6 mile run today. I say attempted because it ended up more of a run/walk. My running buddy is having an off week and had to stop and walk. But it was nice to run with a friend, and now I know where the turnaround point for 6 miles is. I'm going to do the run by myself on Sunday morning and I think it will be no problem.

I'm also up to 1.5 mile runs in my new shoes. They're very different shoes than my old ones so I'm breaking them in slowly, but I think by the end of next week I'll be able to do my 3 mile training runs in them.

Tomorrow is a day of rest for me, I've been pushing it hard this week. I had handbalancing class this morning and managed to hold a handstand for 10 seconds, though I still can't get into one without help finding my balance.
