[Sirona]: Building New Habits

Recommended Posts

My first half-challenge has gotten me in working physical condition, so I can actually purse exercise related goals!

Mission: To build regular exercise into my schedule. It's the final piece in the Jenga tower of life habits that I am building.

Mission 1: Strong Lifts 5x5 workout 3 times a week. I'm aiming for Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday because I already know that my Wednesdays and Fridays are a write-off.

Mission 2: Twice weekly yoga. This can be power yoga, Moksha series or yin yoga. I'm not setting a fixed schedule, but I'm anticipating Sundays and Mondays, due to scheduling constraints around gym time and work.

Mission 3: Keep my nutrition on track to feel better and help lose weight. Three meals and two snacks a day.

[*Edit*] I forgot to put a grading scheme in, so here it is:

Mission 1: A - 3 times, B - 2 times, F - once or less.

Mission 2: A - 2 times, B - Once, F - Zero times

Mission 3: I'm not going to grade this because my schedule can be wonky and it's more of a feel-good goal than a specific mission. I don't want to beat myself up for not eating enough.

Life Quest: Move!

Mission 1: Paint my new apartment

Mission 2: Actually move (June 21st!)

Mission 3: Unpack and make the new place feel like home.

Hi Sirona,

Great set of goals!

Have you ever tried the StrongLifts program before? (Or any of the individual barbell lifts that make up the program?)

I did it for like 6 months back in 2010/2011, and loved it. Doing the SL routine is part of my 6 week challenge as well (I haven't exercised in over 6 months and figured it's a great program to get me back into working out!)

Build some momentum early in case things get crazy while you try to move in a few weeks :nevreness:

I learned how to do all of the StrongLifts lifts except the bent over barbell row and bench press when I was doing CrossFit before my spinal torsion made that a problem. His videos did a good job of explaining the bench press and I figured out the bent over row in the mirror at the gym. I'm pretty comfortable with those lifts and I started right at the beginning despite having much higher PRs for several of those lifts to take it easy on my back. :)

Welcome to the challenge Sirona!

I think It's awesome that you want to mix yoga and lifiting. Those two disciplines are amazing.

All the best and I know you'll do great in the upcoming 6 weeks. :-)

Thanks for the good wishes! It's going to be an interesting 6 weeks. (Confession: I have never painted a wall, much less most of an apartment. Fortunately, I'm good at following instructions.)

I can totally paint, pack, move and hit my goals all at the same time... Well, I'm good under pressure, so let's hope that deadlines and my lifetime need to get an A+ at all times get me through this. :)

I recommend putting in the effort to make sure masking tape covers all the corners and edges before painting even if takes a while, then the painting part is really easy and fun and the end result still looks really neat. (painted my room twice now, and want to paint it a third time lol) Also, remember to take the "before" picture of the apartment, I forgot to do so and regret lol!

After losing a few deposits to unscrupulous landlords lying I now take pictures of EVERYTHING in an apartment before I move in, I send it to the letting agent so they know. I also take pictures after I leave, my aim is to have everything look better after I leave therefore they really cannot hold my deposit legally :)

Good advice! I am going to have to buy primer for a particularly bright room. It's funny, my landlord has been replacing my bathroom all week, so he's pretty clear on how bad the place was and how much better it looks now. The previous tenants did not understand the words dust or vacuum. They're my friends so I know they were trying to live eco-friendly and off the electrical grid, so they whole place just needs scrubbed. I will probably even clean with eco friendly cleaners safe for my cat, but it's the worst. Photos are key though...

So, day one was a total mess. The phone system crashed at work, kept me there super late, and totalled my schedule. I had to literally turn around while driving away to get something for one of our lawyers. :nightmare:  I did make it to my osteopath, who says I actually have back flexibility now!

My wonderful friends helped paint in my absence AND they made me dinner, so the day wasn't a total loss.

Today, I already have all my gym gear in my car, so I will definitely make my SL5x5 workout.

I also have wood filler and painter's tape, so trim will start getting painted tonight!

I keep extra shorts, shirts, socks, everything in my bag.  NO excuses.  Have an excellent workout.  Can't wait to see how great you do.

Way to go on the back! Would like to ask, did you focus on back exercises in particular when you were doing yoga? Or do you think the flexibility came from the strong lift? I'm thinking of strengthening/getting better stability/flexibility/everything haha for my back and shoulders, that's why I asked.

Also, yay to great friends!!
