Around eight weeks ago I started roller derby with the Middlesbrough Milk Rollers as part of their newbie sessions. I'm currently working through to pass my 'Minimum Skills' which is the minimum level I'm expected to achieve before I'm able to join the team and join in with the bouts.

 

I'm not sure I've ever started something I love quite as much as this. It's painful and hard and tiring and I'm ruining my already crapped out knees, but it's amazing!

 

Therefore, my goal this challenge is: Be the best gorram derby player I can be!

 

I have four ways I'm going to do this. 

 

Fitness Goals:

  • Due to vacations in the next 6 weeks I have a possible 9 practice sessions to get to (instead of 12). I intend to get to all of them. (STR + STA)
  • Do 2 off skate workouts a week - focusing on strengthening my left leg in order to perfect right knee falls (STR)
  • Do 3 physio sessions a week - my left knee is a little ruined, so I need to do everything I can to stop hurting myself any further (CON)

Life goal:

  • Study derby rules and attempt to pass minimum skills written test (WIS)

Ideally in the next 6 weeks I would like to achieve the following of my minimum skills:

  • Perfect my right knee falls
  • Achieve 27 laps in 5 minutes (I'm sitting at 22 & 3/4 without crossovers...)
  • Be able to do crossovers
  • Get faster at skating backwards
  • Perfect my plow stops & T-stops

There are other things I'd like to get better at (giving hits, stepping and jumping) but those are what I'd really like to get ticked off in the next 6 weeks.

Having to adjust one of my goals already! 

 

I've had to take myself off skates for this week due to my knee flaring up - we're talking swelling, pain even while stationary (kind of feels like my knee caps about to fall off). I've got an appointment with a sports injury specialist on Thursday, and I'm just going to take care.

 

But this means I now have 8 sessions to go to. (Should point out I'm still going on Tuesday, I'm just not going to be skating)

Yay for rollerderby! I see speed>strength training, I take it you run as a jammer?

I'm currently in min skills training so I don't play as anything yet. I find I prefer jamming, but my big arse and decent balance make me a pretty decent blocker lol. So we'll see :)

So first day of the challenge, no workouts or anything. Did have a doctors appointment though and have been told I have a stomach ulcer, yay. Just what I needed.

 

I feel like I've lived a week in three days!

First off - knees fucked, made an appointment with the physio.

Second - picked up a horrendous cough

Third - was denied a mortgage

Fourth - was accepted for a mortgage and reserved our new build house plot!

Fifth - told I have a stomach ulcer

 

I'm ready for a good nights sleep, but between my knee, my stomach and my cough, I'm not sure that'll happen

Wow!

 

First off, I love the idea of Roller Derby, never seen it live but even on TV it looks like fun.

 

Looks like a bit of a stressful situation going on in your world, though I assume building a new house is good news?

Wow!

 

First off, I love the idea of Roller Derby, never seen it live but even on TV it looks like fun.

 

Looks like a bit of a stressful situation going on in your world, though I assume building a new house is good news?

Roller Derby is amazing, and I saw my first proper live game at the weekend and it's even better in person!

 

The house is an amazing thing, my partner and I have been together for 7 years, we rented a student property for 3 years and for the last year have been living at our respective parents, so we're very excited!

I have decided to be serious about the whole weight loss thing (mostly because I tried on my graduation dress and it's a bit snug - graduation is July 11th)

 

So! I need to clean up my eating. No more cakes, biscuits or chocolate. If I must snack I shall have a yogurt or a piece of fruit or a protein shake.

 

I have a plan to alternate porridge and a green smoothie for breakfast, and on the days I have a green smoothie for brekkie I shall have porridge for lunch and on the days I have porridge for brekkie I shall have a super awesome salad (baby spinach, beetroot, figs - yummy shit)

 

I've been feeling pretty uncomfortable with myself due to the fact that while I was revising I was sitting round a lot and snacking. My jeans are tight, and my muffin top has come back. I want it gone damn it!

Ugh I'm with you on the cleaning up the eating, I have no problems with main courses (cooking is fun!) it's the wonderful and amazing desserts that come afterward, and before, and between, meals I have problems with, I'm all:

I worked out today! I'm now icing my knee (oops) but it's all good!

 

 

That's the workout I did. The whole derby athletics website is really cool and full of amazing workouts!

derby is a great way to workout while having fun =)  I am glad to see you are still enjoying it!  How is your knee feeling today?

The knee has been steadily getting better. I've been icing it every night and doing some light intensity strengthening exercises during the week. Got my physio appointment today, so hopefully I'll be back on skates tonight!

So I've been to the physio and been told to keep off skates for another week.

Apparently all my problems stem from my high arches, my ankles roll in which puts stress on my knees. I've NEVER noticed this before so I'm really glad I had the appointment.

My knees are currently taped with Kinesio tape and she's given me some exercises to do. She also did me a deep tissue massage on my quads and hamstrings.

Hopefully over this next week I can sort myself out as I'm running the race for life on Friday and I'm at a derby boot camp next Saturday xD

Today I started my knee rehab. I got some orthotic insoles, which are already making a difference (I feel like the arch support in them isn't quite big enough and now I've been told my ankles roll in I am VERY conscious of it, but they're okay for now), and I did my first rehab exercise session.

 

I'm to do the following sequence once a day (however if I can I'm going to do it morning and night)

  • All of the following are 2 sets of 10 reps moving up to 15 when I feel comfortable
    • Resistance band leg back, to both sides and forward
    • Static lunges (also known as a split squat)
    • Hip flexion into back extension standing up
    • Squat using a resistance band
    • Single leg squat
    • Clam
    • Reverse clam
    • Bridge
    • Bridge on one leg
    • 30 second plank on elbows
    • 30 second plank on straight arms
    • 30 second side planks
    • Plank while lifting alternate legs

It's amazing, once someone shows you and talks you through how I should be doing these movements, how much I realised my body has been compensating for a lack of stability. It was extremely difficult to drive my knees in line with my toes during the squats.

 

Frankly I had no idea my body was so misaligned - no wonder I'm always getting tons of aches and pains!!

 

I'm really looking forward to sorting these things out, and hopefully I'll be noticing a difference even by my next physio appointment in a weeks time :)

I'm really looking forward to sorting these things out, and hopefully I'll be noticing a difference even by my next physio appointment in a weeks time :)

Yeah, I can't imagine the nightmare misalignment I have. I wanted to get within 30-40 pounds of my target weight loss goal and then get a check up and start fixing that. I'm assuming that because of how much weight I still have on me;  there is creating all sorts of misalignment/compensations.

 

Hope the knee is getting better!  By the way, the adventurer mini and RPG fanatics mini is about doing alternate cardio- don't feel like you have to do something because the knee is bothering you ok? Heal up!

I will do the best I can with the cardio mini :) I am trying to lose a little bit of weight - though luckily I'm not carrying too much extra, I still think losing a little will help in the long run :)
