Smiling River Accepts the Job Offer

Recommended Posts

Background

Age: 25 (26 in July!)

Gender: Male

Weight: 240lbs

Height: 5'11"

History: Previous Muay Thai training, following an absence of meaningful exercise. I've worked out for the past few months so I am not starting from scratch.

Main Quest

Lose about 40-50lbs while gaining functional strength and athleticism. I want to perfect technique so that I can teach it to others.

Quest #1: Do something physical everyday. Sprint, Walk (30min), Kettlebell, Yoga or a mix.

Everyday may seem extreme to some, but I plan on rest days for sure! But I do have a dog that needs a long walk, so even rest days will have some walking.

Quest #2: Eat Paleo. I want to go back to eating Primal/Paleo at least 80% of the time.

I have slightly fallen off the bandwagon with Paleo eating. I want to get back on it and stick to it, it made me feel great!

Quest #3: Sleep at least 7 hours a night and have a regular sleeping schedule.

I always want to stay up later than I should, but a regular schedule does wonders for me. Important to keep energy up for all the work outs!

Life Quest

I need to land a regular job. I've luckily been offered one reciently and pending the background check, I should have it. This will ease the financial burden and relieve a lot of stress. Even though I've accepted the position I still feel like I don't have it until I start working. I'll update this when I start. My secondary Life Quest after that is to start a Personal Training Certification program and start training clients. I currently train friends for free!

Motivation

I've always wanted to lose weight. I was chubby as a kid and I feel that it will be a huge stepping stone for me to grow out of it. More than making me healthy physically, I think mentally I'll feel really proud of myself once it comes off. My biggest hurdle is the mental aspect of it, it's easy for me to talk myself away from putting in the effort. The physical aspect is actually fun, and when I slack off and work out again I always think "why don't I do this more often?!" I hope that during this challenge I can rely on the community in times when I start to lose motivation, and push ahead with your help! Grok on!

Additional Info

Work out schedule

Generally I don't plan everything to a t, because life happens and I try to be in the moment as much as possible. If I have low energy one day for whatever reason, I wont push myself to do that super hardcore workout I planned a week ago. Better safe than sorry. That said I do like a sort of a guideline, so that I am not completely floating out there with no plan. So here is my work out schedule for the challenge. It's, of course, subject to change!

Sunday - Rest day, 30+min walk

Monday - Boot camp

Tuesday - Sprints & Kettlebell

Wednesday - Yoga

Thursday - Yoga OR Kettlebell

Friday - Sprints & Kettlebell

Saturday - Spin class

Breakdown:

Every day I hope to walk at least 30min. I have a terrier, and they need to use their energy (or else!) hence the long walks. I go to a local gym that offers a fair amount of classes, although sometimes space is limited so I always need something to fall back on.

Boot camp is pretty self-explanatory.

Sprints: I am starting with 30sec sprints of MAX effort with 1min 30sec rest interval. I do this 4 times max, and don't really see a huge benefit in doing it for more than that. I will keep improving the quality of the sprints, such as speed. I like to use a stationary bike for these.

Kettlebell: I have a list of exercises and pick 4 to rotate. I do 1min of exercise and 2min "break" (push ups, sit ups, burpees, etc.) I basically keep it in HIIT zone by constantly doing something. Some of the kettlebell exercises are Swing, Press, Thrusters, Bent-over row (1 arm), Side-raisers, Deadlift, etc..

Yoga: Vinyasa Flow. I consider yoga days to be partially rest days, as I feel it recovers my body rather than taxing it physically. The two days of yoga really double down on my flexibility and will probably help prevent injuries in the future. Plus, it's just fun.

Spin Class: This is very tentative depending on how I feel at the end of this week. The class is also at 9am which I am not a fan of! They will add more spin classes soon so maybe there will be one later in the day but thus far... this is more of a "depending how I feel" class.

Thanks!

Day 1 Progress Report:
I've injured my toe of all things, when the vacuum landed on my foot! Cost me just under a week of lost exercise, but now it's feeling a lot better and I can start the challenge on the right foot. PUNS ARE FRIENDS.

The pic is not for the faint of heart:

Things I learned today... coffee is not a good thing to drink after dinner. I hope to take a bit of melatonin to help me sleep tonight, and I may very well pass out by noon. Hey Goal#3... how's it going.

I'm also planning on updating my profile with some mini-goals soon. :)

Congrats on getting the job! (I know you haven't started yet, but you will soon, right? :) )

You've picked good goals for yourself and I know you can power-through even with that mutant toe nail, haha. I hate injuring myself, especially when it comes from me being clumsy. :P

I'm also looking to get certified and signed up to be a Fitness Instructor Specialist. Do you know how and when you would like to get certified? :)

Yeah I'll be getting it done through NASM. Once I start on the new job, I'll buy the online course package and start on the certification. How about you?

Hey guys & thanks for the replies! Yes, that is indeed a kettlebell. I have 4 so far, 15lb, 55lbs and two 35lbs. I am psyched that they caught on here... I'm from the motherland and they were always a thing there. My pops used them in his army training back in the day. Anyway, I am just glad people know what kettlebell even means now!

You have quite a few exercises in common with me! Love a bit of yoga, and spinning as well!

Also, I have a terrier! (or as she's known in our house, a terrorist!) Any chance of a picture of yours? What breed? Ours is a Jack Russel crossed with a Border - such a cutie!

Day 2 Progress Report:

Toe problems. What a way to start a first challenge. i had some energy from not doing anything physical the past week due to the injury, and decided to go for a run with Cosmos. Well after that I was like, OKAY I think I can do some kettlebells at home too! Got started and then waaaait a minute, why the floor sticky?! Oh yeah, my toe is bleeding. From the running. Because of injury. Even though it doesn't hurt much now, the nail.. ahh nevermind I'll spare you the gory details. But I might be losing the nail entirely. That never happened to me so I am not sure how long it would put me out for, or if it all... so that poses a serious threat to the challenge.

On the bright side, I did take some melatonin last night (not something I do regularly) and passed out at 10pm, which is when I usually go to bed when I work. Yeah exciting life bros. But I used to need to wake up at 6am to do sprints with the dog to wear him out before he's left home for 9 hours while i'm at work! I think my schedule with the new gig will be similar, although I might be able to get away with sleeping in a little more. So yeah going forward my schedule should be regulated and stuff. Yay goal#3.

Ah, Russia of course!

And the nail came off. It was a lot more grisly than I thought. Yeah *shudder* I don't know anymore. I will do my best to power through and heal up! I don't know how long it takes to get back to normal and be able to exercise without a damn toenail.

Day 3/4/5 Progress Report

I'll lead with the exciting news - passed my background check and got a starting date for the new job! Unfortunately it's at the end of the month so I have so more "unofficial vacation" time left. Very much looking forward to that job and all it will provide :P

Toe problems have been keeping me from doing any serious work outs, although I will go for a run tomorrow with Cosmos and how it feels. I've been pretty much 50/50 on Paleo eating, which should improve next week as I am shopping tomorrow and will stick to Paleo only foods.Sleep has been whack again... I can't wait for my job to start because having a regular schedule keeps me in line in terms of sleep/diet/gym. I don't know why but I do a lot better when I've somewhere to be, maybe because I plan things around that.

Ohhh my, that toe seems to have a mind of its own but you're going past that and still working out, so that takes a lot of dedication! You're doing great. :D

And I know the feeling. I find it difficult to plan things when I have nowhere to go, I'd much rather just sleep and watch Netflix all day, haha. Anyway, keep up the great work!

Post your dog pic!!! I love Border Collies and JRTs. Mine is probably a Schnauzer / terrier mix. We're not sure, he's a shelter dog.

Day 6/7 Progress Report:

Day 6 I went out to the park and did plenty of walking, bought some healthy food for the week and walked it home. I count that as exercise for the day! Ate fairly healthy too, just meat and vegetables.

Day 7 slept in to get my max ZZZ's and went to the gym. I started StrongLifts 5x5 because it seems like an effective program that fell in line with my primal lifestyle. I also can't do too much else because of the TOE. I will try yoga this week and see how that goes... maybe light sprinting tomorrow but we'll see! I hate not being able to do whatever I want in the gym (or outside even) but I guess it did make me start StrongLifts so that's good! Ate good today.

Week 1: The toe problems threw a wrench into things in terms of working out. When I don't work out regularly, it's harder to maintain the diet. So it's been a rough start, although I am pumped for week 2 and hope that maybe there is a silver lining. I know many people will likely start strong and may not end as strongly - where as I can build up to the challenge, instead of taking of at the start and burning out early. Starting my job in July which should regulate sleeping, so I wont have to worry much about that goal. Toe should be getting better (seeing a doctor just in case) so looking forward to sprinting/yoga/everything!

EDIT: OMFG almost forgot to mention that I officially bought my course for the personal trainer certification today! Excited to get started on that tomorrow and get certified possibly before summer ends! :)
