LadyWitch
So... I completely blanked on the last challenge (and the one before that... and the start of this one...) But I'm still plodding along trying to get back into gear... Which is never as easy as it sounds. I had an MRI on my lower back a few weeks ago, and have been told that I have three prolapsed discs which are putting pressure on the nerves... which explains a few things. I'm now waiting for a referral to a 'panel' who will decide if I'm suitable for surgery. However, I'm doing everything I can to reduce the pain and hopefully prevent the need for going under the knife - so, that's what I'm focusing on atm. Increasing my core strength, flexibility and pain management methods. I've been doing short Yoga sessions every day for the last week and a half, and my goal is to carry on doing this, and increase it slowly to a minimum of 30 minutes every day (I'm currently doing about 15 mins). I've also restarted squat training, and I'm being very careful with it... A bad squat pulls on my back and makes everything worse, but a good squat stretches the things that need stretching and helps to build the muscles up, so I'm doing them very slowly and with as good a form as I can manage. As for diet, I'm trying to be 80% paleo, but my main goal is to completely cut out the diet coke (again). Every time I do this, I manage it for a few weeks, and then it starts creeping back in again... a friend posted this on my FB page, and it's definitely helped! But I have to admit, I really struggle when we go out for something to drink other than coke... I'm not a big alcohol drinker anyway, so I've been having Lime and Soda, but I still crave the coke So, goals...Do 30 minutes of Yoga x7 times a weekQuit the coke, completely That's it for the moment... Once I can get back into the habit of doing stuff (and succeeding) I'll think about adding more goals... although that may have to wait for the next challenge... Especially as I foolishly agreed to take part in a Tough Mudder next year with a friend from my burlesque class (back allowing, obviously!) Oh... and if I don't update at least once a week, PM me! LadyWitch
You're right Hiraedd! It was about time!!! Anywho... Yesterday went ok... did my yoga as planned, plus an extra 15 minutes (taking me up to my goal of 30). Diet was on track, until the evening, when I couldn't resist the last slice of cake that K had bought home from his gaming weekend... It tasted lovely, but resulted in the expected stomach cramps and nausea... Why to I do this to myself?! I know I'll react badly, but I still do it Diet coke has not been consumed since Sunday... and as there is none in the house and I'm not planning on leaving it today, there should be none consumed today either. In fact, all going well, the first chance I'll have to 'encounter' any will be Saturday... We have a Steampunk 'punk-nic' in the afternoon, and a friends birthday party in the evening. So both coke and paleo will be 'at risk'... Added stress atm is coming from our complete lack of money (post honeymoon blues means we're both living on our credit cards) and my dad is waiting for bypass surgery, which he's booked in for next week. While he's in hospital, I need to be at my parents house to look after my disabled mum and uncle, who I love dearly, but an afternoon visit exhausts me, so 5-7 days (or more) is going to drain me completely... It wont affect work, as I work from home, but it will affect my diet, as they live on ready meals, cake and diet coke (yes, my mum is where I got my coke addiction from). I'm going to do my best to stick to my goals, but I know it'll be really hard. Only plus side is that I'll be having to walk their two dogs everyday, so I'll be getting some exercise... Despite doing really badly at the last challenge (as in, posting my thread and then never looking at it again) I have managed to loose 2lb or so since then and an inch or so off all my measurements... I'll take a 'starting' photo later, but my stats are as follows: Weight: 169.5lb (76.8kg)Bust: 39(101cm)Chest: 32 (82cm)Waist: 33 (84.5cm)Hips: 44 (113cm)Thigh: 25.5 (66.5cm) I'm not doing very good at setting weight loss goals, as I can never manage to meet them and then I feel guilty and go off the rails. Which is why I'm focusing on flexibility and strength this time around. Hopefully, once I build the habit of yoga everyday I can then add in walking everyday, or strength training... It'll all depend on what my back is up for, and I'm trying to get better at listening to my body without over-reacting, as any twinge used to send my waddling for the sofa and the pain meds... Now I'm trying to only take meds when it's at its worst, and managing it with hot baths and stretching the rest of the time (so far it seems to be working). My plans for today are to do my yoga and finish my octopus dress for the party on Saturday (its an under water themed shin-dig) I'm nearly done, just need to make the eyes 2 Check out my character here! Sarah Barr
Hey! I had to cut out Irn Bru a couple of challenges ago. Jill Beat
Better late than never! My general opinion is that you're probably doing the right thing not taking pain meds except when you really need them, and managing the pain in other ways - pain meds usually just mask everything that's going on, and can lead to re-injury or at least delay healing. They're a quickfix (definitely justified sometimes) but can become a bad habit. Have you tried replacing diet coke with something else. Doing a whole30 right now I'm drinking a lot of unsweetened herbal tea. A lot are fairly sweet on their own. Glad you're back! LadyWitch
I drink a lot of Lady Grey or Earl Grey, and I have a huge selection of fruit/herbal teas... all of which I drink unsweetened! And I drink a ton of water each day too (I've just put a pad by the sink so I can track how many glasses I'm drinking)... But they don't really help with the coke-cravings Yesterday was a good day, yoga got done, dress got worked on (but not finished) and all the food was paleo, with the exception of the soy sauce my husband added to dinner without thinking... But I'm happy with my progress so far. I'm not entirely sure the yoga is helping with the pain from my back, but I'm definitely doing better with the stretches themselves each time I do it... I can stretch that little bit further each day, and hopefully I'll start seeing some pain reduction soon I took a photo this morning for comparison, and will try to post it later (I need to do my year review, so I may post it in that). Would love to be able to do a side-by-side pic of my first photo and todays one but as I don't think I have any editing software on my Mac, I may just have to post pics separately When doing my photo, I suddenly realised that I started to go off track with paleo/exercise when I stopped doing the photos... So maybe that's the carrot I need to get me going (the stick is how rotten I feel when I eat something that doesn't agree with me )... I guess only time will tell! Goals for today... Yoga (which I've actually already done!), finish the octopus dress, and make a battle plan for dealing with gaming junk food tomorrow evening. (my daily goals seem to be coming in threes, which is a manageable number, and I might make a 'thing') 1 Check out my character here! LadyWitch
Started today by hoovering the entire house... I'd like to say this is how I start every friday, but in reality I have a flea infestation which I'm trying desperately to get on top of. The cats are miserable, and so I am The frontline flea stuff isn't working, nor is the house spray I have, so I'm off to the vets this afternoon to get some different/stronger stuff. Hopefully it'll work quickly... In other news, I'm managing to stick to paleo pretty solidly, but tonight will be the challenge. Gaming night is always hard, as people will bring 'gaming crap' snacks along, which then get left at mine till next time... Dinner tonight will be cold meats and salad, so thats fine, and I'm going to make sure there is plenty of fruit and nuts for me to snack on... Fingers crossed I make it through ok. Tomorrow's picnic has been cancelled, so its just my friends birthday party in the evening (and no, I still haven't finished my dress) and that'll be after dinner, so I can eat paleo all day, and then just contend with going out and not drinking diet coke. I'm going to tell my husband to not let me have any... if he does then he gets no nookie for a week! (Not that that'll be much of an issue as I'm off to my parents on Monday for a week or so ) Haven't done today's yoga yet, will try and do it before I go out shopping... It's been two weeks since I started doing it, and I have to say, I'm really enjoying it! My back didn't hurt nearly as bad this morning (I didn't have to start the day with a hot bath like I've been doing all week) and I'm definitely seeing an increase in my flexibility... Now I just need to make sure I do it EVERY SINGLE DAY. My water tracking the last couple of days shows that I'm drinking about 8 pints of water each day... so not bad. I also drink a couple of cups of tea a day, so I'm fairly happy with my fluid intake... Now if I could just stop craving diet coke, I'd be happy Check out my character here! LadyWitch
Gaming wasn't too bad actually. I had a few Doritos, and a couple of coconut macaroons, but other than that I managed to only eat paleo foods. So I'm treating that as the 20%. Saturday was mostly spent blitzing the house against the fleas, and finishing the octopus dress. Breakfast was a paleo pancake with bacon, lunch was a strawberry and coconut milk smoothie (I had a ton of strawberries to use up!) and dinner was roasted duck leg and salad. The party went really well, everyone loved my dress and I avoided drinking any coke (or alcohol for that matter) so I'm really happy with myself! Also discovered that its really hard to play pool in a huge dress, but dancing in it is great fun Unfortunately I couldn't stay too late as I'm starting work at 9am today, and then have a 10 1/2 hour day, but it was fun and it's nice to be able to celebrate a friends birthday like that. I now need to work out what we're going to do for my birthday next sunday... With very few funds and taking into account that I may not even be able to get away from my parents house Will upload a photo of the octopus dress in a bit, and also my 'staring' pic for this challenge... LadyWitch
Yoga done yesterday and today. No diet coke consumed. Goals are on track However, I'm off to my parents house this afternoon, and will be there for the rest of the week at least (while my dad goes in for his bypass surgery) to look after my disabled mum and uncle. The food will be terrible, the fridge will be stocked with cans of diet coke, and there will be the daily 'afternoon tea and cake' to contend with. It will not be easy. That's not even including the stress of dealing with my mum on a daily basis (don't get me wrong, I love her dearly, but she is such hard work!) BUT I will have dogs to walk, and my dad's been fixing up my bike for me, so I'll have that to ride, and for the duration of my stay I will be focusing furiously on drinking WATER rather than anything else (except for the odd cup of Lady Grey). Mondays being my 'normal' weigh in day, I jumped on the scales this morning... I've lost 1/2lb since last week. Which is great. But I felt that familiar sinking disappointment... the whole 'I worked sooooo hard, I didn't eat a load of crap... it should be more' dialog started in the back of my mind. And then I looked at my reflection and said to myself 'WTF?! You've been contending with major back pain, stress about your dad, and a party. You've not had any coke in a week, you've been doing yoga every day, even when your back has been playing up. You ROCK!' I figure if I say it to myself enough, I'll convince that little voice in the back of my mind to shut up And in the mean time, I'm going to try to not step on the scales again until the end of the challenge, so I can focus more on my performance than my appearance. 1 Check out my character here! Flea infestations are terrible, my cat had them once when she was a kitten and it took us ages to get rid of them. LadyWitch
Hopefully the fleas are now dealt with... we dosed both cats with a stronger flea killer and fumigated the entire house on Saturday. There was a definite decrease in the amount of the little blighters by Sunday So, yesterday went ok. I did my yoga first thing, worked for 6 hours, did a load of chores that needed doing and then headed to my parents house. I arrived just in time for 'afternoon tea'... I had a Lady Grey and a satsuma (which I bought with me) while everyone else had tea and cake. Dinner was a beef and vegetable stir-fry (with no noodles) so pretty good, the only problem with it was my dad had marinated the beef in soy sauce... I really need to get some gluten free stuff if people are going to keep cooking with it! I did have a pot of jelly and raspberries, but figure if thats the worst of my infractions while I'm here, then great! I also avoided drinking any coke but making sure that I always had a glass of water to hand... go me! Also yesterday, while browsing other peoples threads, I came across the 30 Days of Change program by Neila Ray (here)... And decided 'what the hell! I'll give it a go!' So I started it yesterday... I'm only doing the level one stuff, to give my back time to strengthen and adapt, but so far so good. I did the bodyweight stuff before leaving my house, and then after dinner I went for a walk up the hill and along the bridal path behind my parents house (which ended up being 45 minutes rather than 30 as I missed the turn off on the way back and ended going half a mile further than planned). So, yoga is the 'must do' each day, the 30DoC is a 'as often as my back is up for it' event. (Although on that front, despite sleeping (badly) on a horrid pull out thing, my back if feeling amazingly pain free atm... maybe a 1-2 on the pain scale, where its normally 4-5 first thing in the morning... so the yoga must be helping!) I've already done my yoga for today, although it wasn't easy as I was doing it in the living room and had one of the dogs trying to join in I shut him out, but he went and woke my mum up, who didn't even think about opening the door and letting the dogs into the room (its the route to the garden) so I had him jump on me mid-stretch Oh well, I'll just make sure I do it tomorrow when the dogs are asleep! I'd do it in 'my room' if I could but there isn't enough floor space... I'll probably spread the 30DoC work out over the course of the day but today is planks and wall-sits, with some jumping jacks and high knees, so shouldn't be too hard... 2 Check out my character here! GingaNinja
Really glad to hear the yoga is helping your back! That 30 days of change thing looks interesting as well! Level 1 looks challenging without being to crazy but I am sure it will make a lot of difference for getting back to a certain level of fitness. When I got super fit I used the Roller Derby Workout Challenge, but I think I quit like week 5 because it was making me miserable of the sheer amount of stuff I had to do 6 days a week intense exercise with only one rest day. I mean I was so tanked though so it definitely worked. Be More Ninja Current Challenge Instagram Link to comment
LadyWitch
Whether I'll be able to do it every day, I'm not sure... so it may take me more than 30 days to complete level 1, but tbh I don't mind that... the important thing is to start using my body the way its meant to be used, and do it in a way that strengthens my back and allows for progression to the point where I can do the TM next year 2 Check out my character here!
