The mountain between hero and villain

Hi folks

 

I'm not gone.. I was just on holiday.. and missed the previous challenge.

 

Although my trip to Corsica wasn't "rest" ( kids, lot of driving to explore nice beaches) I'm ready for the next chapter.

 

In this "Firefly" themed challenge I have a serious goal:

(this is my serious face)

 

to stay fit while the gym is closed ( in August) and ready to start in September. I rent an apartment on nearby mountains for the whole month of August. Kids, parents and parents in law... There is a nice trail in the back that brings you to the top of a cliff: a nice hiking morning session opportunity!

 

Fitness:

 

  • Train 6 days a week: I have 3 more kickboxing sessions in the gym. I plan to run , skipping ropes, hiking every day and / or do my bodyweight routine.

Life:

 

  • Reading: I want to read as much as possible. I have a couple of fantasy books, a programming manual and other Martial arts related books to read on my kindle that have been waiting for ages
  • Meditation: "Play it one more time, Sam" 
  • MVP: I'm working on a app and I would like to participate in a founding challenge in September. I need to build a MVP ( minimum viable product) and fill the paperwork. This is huge.

Bonus:

  • Watch the Firefly episodes I missed and then Serenity the movie
  • Complete the Standford course on "Natural Language Processing" on Coursera.
  • 3 days of hiking with my wife: we plan to make a tour sleeping in mountain shelters

 

 

Goals:

  • Run sub 4 min/km
  • 2 minutes of high speed kickboxing combos 
  • 20 min of skipping ropes

Great looking challenge!! 

 

 

  • MVP: I'm working on a app and I would like to participate in a founding challenge in September. I need to build a MVP ( minimum viable product) and fill the paperwork. This is huge.

 

Any tips for someone who wants to try to write an app but has no freaking clue how to use Java?

It depends: if your background is more on web design try a toolkit like appcellerator. If you have no programming background... fall back to the old school and .. study :-)

 

 

Also, catch up on those episodes! They're worth catching up with!

Very nice.

 

I found reading before bed was a great way to read a lot more in my life.  Helps with the sleep, too.  Maybe that'll help you chew through some books.  And when you're in mountain shelters maybe take your mind off the crummy beds.

oh my

 

On Friday I hit the gym... and no body else showed up! So I had a "private lesson" with the had coach. I was a instructive  and destructive experience at the same time!

 

I'm realizing that eating will be the hardest part: living with parents and parents in law will limit my dietary option. Let's see what I can do.

day II

 

Ok let's start:

 

skipping rope: 3 min X 5 with 1 minute rest

body weight: elevated push-us, sit-ups, standing push-ups, planks. I skipped squats because my back hurts ( it happens when you have kids to play with :-P )

MEDITATION! JUST 5 MINUTES BUT I DID IT!

Sounds like a pretty good first day.  5 minutes is better than 0 minutes!  Way to go!

Day 3:

 

Last kickboxing session of the season: there was 2 of us and a kid. I spend sometime holding pads for him... it was fun. Then when was my turn to hit the pads ( with the coach... not with the kid) I discovered I wasn't able to perform left leg Roundhouse Kicks. Do not know why. I have to gain access to a heavy bag and try to do something about it before September.

 

Meditation : Planned a 10 min session before breakfast but I was interrupted by my 3yrs son who woke up, jumped off to bed , walked in the living room where I was sitting in the lotus form and asked " Did you find your inner peace?"

Huh. You mean you can't lift your left leg?

 

No it was more technique related: no pivoting with the supporting foot, no lean back and an akward half switch footwork. I felt like a total noob. The right kick was almost ok. At the end of the session I had pain in lower back and right hip because I was doing everything wrong. I just can't figure out why. I focus on boxing and conditioning in the last two weeks but could I really have un-learn how to kick?

DAY 4

 

training: I decided it was abs day... I don't know.. I was in abs moood

Meditation: another 5 minutes before falling asleep. 

MVP: I put together the slides for a pitch and made a nice video with them ( required by the founding challenge)

Ok sorry folks I spent the weekend in the mountains with no internet connection.

 

Following the program I did my hiking to the Serenity of the cliff tops. The house I rented for August is superb.. the only problem is no 3G signal... so I'll be stuck for 2 weeks.

 

I'm also working on the MVP... things are starting to come together.

 

week 2 day 1

 

pushups : 50

abs : 300

bulgarian squats  : 24

hand stand push ups: 24

planks: 3 X 1 min

 

Must work more on skipping ropes this week....

pushups : 50

skipping ropes 3 min X 5 with one minute rest . The plan is to do 4 min X 5 in week 4, 5 min X 4 in week 5 and 10 X 2 in week 6 with a 20 min X 1 grand final


 


Yesterday evening I ended up wasting a lot of time watching Braking bad instead of Firefly ...
