SugarRay's Climbing Challenge!

Hey guys! Name's SugarRay. This is my first challenge, and I'm damn well looking forward to it!

I'm doing this challenge to level up my Climbing skill. I want to get the STR, DEX and STA gains associated with climbing, so...

Let the quest begin.

 

Assassins-Creed-3-Connor-Climbing-Screen

 

MAIN QUEST: Level up Climbing!

  • Complete the three-week climbing course at my local Climbing Gym.
  • Climb all the routes that I'm allowed to climb.
  • Be able to do 20 pull-ups/chin-ups, 75 push-ups and ten handstand push-ups by the end of the challenge.

Side Quests: Pass my driving test, which is something I really ought to do.

 

Grading:

 

Main Quest:

  1. Completing the 3-week course: 10 XP
  2. Climbing all the routes: 5 XP per route. 
  3. 20 Pull-ups/Chin-ups: 20 XP (40 XP total)
  4. 75 push-ups: 20 XP
  5. 10 Handstand push-ups: 20 XP

Side Quest:

  1. Passing the Driving test: 10 XP

So, Total XP available: 200 XP.

I think I'll put down 80% of the total available to Level Up!

 

Summary: To Level Up, I must get 160/200 possible XP.

I think that's quite fair!

 

 

Motivation:

I am doing this challenge because Climbing is an awesome skill to have and a very beneficial exercise for all.

Oh, and take a good look at Connor scaling that rock face up there. Isn't that that cool as hell!?

 

Quest log

The week's results shall be recorded every Monday; the number of pull-ups/chin-ups, push-ups and hand-stand push-ups as well as my climbing activity. 

 

Week 1: 

Initial values for body-weight exercises recorded:

Pull-ups/Chin-ups: 10/20

Push-ups: 31/75

Hand-stand push-ups: 3/10

 

Climbing Activity:

*Climbing course postponed. Will resume on the 19th of August*.

Bouldering practice: COMPLETE.

 

 

Week 2:

Bodyweight exercises progress:

Pull-ups/Chin-ups: 12/20

Push-ups: 40/75

Hand-stand push-ups: 4/10

 

Climbing Activity:

*Climbing course postponed. Will resume on the 19th of August*.

Bouldering practice: COMPLETE.

 

Week 3:

Pull-ups/Chin-ups: 13/20

Push-ups: 43/75

Hand-stand push-ups: 4/10

Looks like you have a solid challenge here! Climbing has always intrigued me, but I'd have to get over my fear of falling in order to really get into it. It looks like you've got everything well in hand here. Hey RogueWelkin, thanks for looking at my challenge!

 

I've got to say, your challenge is epic. Looking good in a kilt at your wedding day is a goal worth working for!

Just imagine waiting at the altar looking like this:

...maybe replace the leather armor with a jacket and tie and you're good to go!

I'll like to see how you fare in such an awesome quest, so I I'll follow your challenge too. =D

 

Thanks for the information, it's been really helpful. I'll probably be needing more than a few kicks up the rear to get me to complete my challenge to it's fullest extent, so I'd benefit tremendously by joining Rogue Squadron.

I love climbing too so we definitely have that in common. What kind of routes are you allowed to climb? Do you do toprope or bouldering or both? :)

Hey there, Lilith!

 

Well, I guess I can say that the Assassins are my one true calling!

At the moment, I've only been climbing for a month or so. I originally started climbing because I wanted the strength, grace and co-ordination that climbers all seem to possess, but my first time climb was an absolutely unforgettable experience. The moment I reached the top of the little beginner's bouldering route gave me a thrill that I'd never experienced before. That day I climbed until my forearms refused to work, heh.

 

At the moment, I'm only allowed to do the bouldering problems. I've managed to complete a good few, but some are just too hard for me at the moment (for now!). I have to pass the three-week course before I'm allowed to do the top-ropes, which is the main focus of my challenge!

I guess I'll level up once I finish the course... kinda like a finishing tutorial, eh? If I could put into words how much joy it brings me to live out my live like an MMO, I would probably end up exploding. =D

 

Regardless, thank you so much for the info. I'll probably be checking out those links quite regularly; the top-rope course at my climbing gym is supposed to be pretty tough!

I'll be following your challenge too; it seems pretty great! I'm going to be hand-standing a lot in the next six weeks, so it's nice to know I'm not the only one upside down.

Haha you sound like me. My first time climbing was toprope under supervision and I thought it was a bit scary because I'm kind of afraid of heights but once I made it to the top... Nothing could beat that feeling. Right now I do toprope and bouldering and coming Friday I'm going on a two week holiday where I'll do an introductory course outdoor rock climbing! I'm sooooo excited for that!

Hey SugarRay!  Love your quest!  What are your numbers for pushups and handstand pushups before starting?

 

 

I can do 31 push-ups and 3 handstand push-ups at the moment (measured yesterday). Yeah, not very good... but I guess these are weaknesses that I must overcome, hm? xD

My plan is to do a high number of three rep sets for the handstand push-ups and I'm currently doing weighted push-up sets to build up on my current number. I'm not sure if that's an effective plan or not, but I guess we'll see!

You know, one of the coolest things about rock-climbing is how mentally tough you have to be to do it. Everybody's scared of heights to some degree, but rock-climbers just brush away that fear and climb heights for fun. I couldn't think of anything more bad-ass if I tried, really.

I have my first session out of five for my top-rope course tomorrow. It's not as cool as an outdoor rock climbing course, but I can't wait!

Hahaha it is very cool though! I know I loved it too! So you do the course to learn safety stuff and belaying right? So you can climb toprope independently? :) That's a very very important first step because even now safety comes first. Always remember that. Assassins have a tendency to get hurt and although I'd love you to join the assassins, I'd rather you don't take after us in EVERY way. :P

Uhh....I can't even do a handstand...and I'm at less than 10 push-ups, those numbers of yours aren't that bad. 80D

Yeah, safety is the biggest thing in the whole course; we're tested on it after every session and we'll only pass if we perform well in those tests consistently.
The course leader doesn't like to take risks, which is why he puts so much stress on safety. I can't say I blame him!
I'm no stranger to injury, there's nothing more frustrating than an injury that takes you down for weeks on end.
Thanks for your concern, though! I'm starting to love this community more and more, the idea behind it and the especially people within it are just excellent. =D

You see, the boxing gym I go to has a few kids in it's ranks. Now, these kids are encouraged to work as hard as they can.. which is why you find ten year olds who can bust out handstand push-ups like nobody's business.

Of course, the power/weight ratio for them makes it easier, but that's no excuse in my books! =D

That's really nice of you to say! However, this whole community's done far more for me that I could for it.

Today, my dad brought home fried chicken. I love fried chicken with all my heart and soul, even if it is extremely unhealthy.

Now, I've spent time looking through the challenges on this forum and loads of people are working to regulate their diet. Seeing all these people resolving to cut unhealthy food from their diet is really quite inspiring.

I looked at those beautiful, golden fried chicken pieces and for the first time I decided to forgo my single greatest guilty pleasure. And come on, that was only through reading the resolutions of other people! 

Either way, it's pretty early to say, but I think joining this community is one of the best things I could've done.

It's amazing to me how we are able to inspire each other. Just by reading your story, *you* have strengthened my resolve to abstain from sugar. It's circular! ^.^

Well, there's bad news and good news.

 

Bad news: for some reason, the top-rope course has to be cancelled. We weren't told why, but that's okay because...

 

Good news: our top-rope course starts again on the 19th of August and finishes on the 2nd of September. This is great, because the bulk of it is within the time for my challenge and now I can use the three weeks until it starts to work on my upper body strength and prepare.

 

Well, I guess every challenge has it's obstacles. Wouldn't be a challenge otherwise.

Either way, I'm not about to give up! =D

Yup, I feel the same.  Joining here was one of the best decisions I made.
