Bag End to Brandywine Ultra

Recommended Posts

Did a short 3 miles today with a massive hangover. Should have done more but it was really crowded in the french quarter. New route planned for tomorrow.

running really is the best medicine, totally resets the system

Just put in a devil's run - 6.66km, had I known I was 200m from the halfway point I'd have pushed on.

Have a question and I was wondering if you folks could help me out. I've been running about 45-55 miles per week for the past few months and my feet are getting chronicly torn up. Usually I mcgyver this remedy where I put some krazy glue on a piece of gauze and step on it to create an epoxy "scab". I then just let it be until the skin sheds the epoxy shell. This works well for cuts, calluses, etc. But lately my toes, balls of my feet and heels all are in some state of disrepair. Any thoughts of treatments for toughening up the parts of the foot that strike the ground?

Also I was told to get shoes that are slightly larger than my size because feet expand while running. I think this causes my feet to slide slightly inside my shoe, causing some of the calluses. Should I try a tighter fit?

i don't care what u think of me. unless u think i'm awesome. in which case u're right.

Definitely. Shoes should fit your feet well. If your feet expand while running (which I highly doubt), they expand very little. Get shoes that are a comfortable fit.

I recommend visiting a runner's specialist store. Good running shoes are expensive, but they're totally worth it.

Hey ETF, that is a good question. Start a new thread in the runners' guild so we don't loose it within this one. I know the average miles you have per week is really high, even for those who do long distance running. I would talk to a shoe specialist and make sure you get a good fitting shoe and research foot care for long distance running. One thing I would suggest is to look at your stride and make sure you are not hitting the ground too hard and you may want to shorten you runs.

Well there's a few things going on here:

1.) how OLD are your shoes? - Shoes typically last 400-500km/300-400km, but this really depends on your technique/footstrike/weight/running surface quality/etc. Regardless, at ~50miles/wk you'll be looking at a new set every few months.

2.) Fit is King. - The main thing you want to look at (IMHO) is the shape of the last (the footbed which the shoe is built on). I have a prominent big toe which makes it nearly impossible for me to wear the highly touted Saucony Kinvaras because the shape of the footbed favours a prominent 2nd toe. Not many people consider this, but in my experience it has more to do with fitment than other features. Look at your foot (top down), what point sticks out most? Big toe/2nd toe/hybrid? Find something that matches that and feels good on yoru foot.

3.) Feet do swell when running - I love a wide open toe box where my feet can spread out, however sliding around does cause callous' for some. What you need to figure out is: do you need the extra space or do you need a tight fitting shoe? Sounds a little rudimentary but bear with me. My New Balance MT101 trail shoes are a full size bigger than my regular street shoes, partially to compensate for swelling feet/movement, but also because the heel counter fits my foot perfectly. i.e. - I can ratchet down the forefoot, have my heel set, and the ball of my foot can do anything it wants.

4.) Running socks are your friend - Coming from a cotton background (I wore cotton EVERYthing for a long time) I can attest to the benefits of wicking materials. A dry foot deals better with the rigours of running. Try a few brands to see what works for you, ESPECIALLY dual layered socks. 1 layer sticks with your foot, 1 layer moves with the shoes, and they rub each other...not your foot.

5.) Time off - All of this is fantastic advice (I know, I wrote it myself), but if you don't give your feet a few days etc. to fully heal then you are really fighting an uphill battle

hope this helps...

oh, and if all else fails, try hoof maker - I creates pliable callous' that you can actually do things with. Rock climbers have been using it forever. http://www.amazon.com/Straight-Arrow-The-Hoofmaker-oz/dp/B000GCR668

Ok I have a question about the race, does it have to be running or would the elliptical count also? I am planning on getting back to running soon but not sure when and this kinda looks like something that would keep me motivated on my cardio workouts..

I think it would be fine if you used the elliptical. It keeps mileage right? I wouldn't want to keep you from being motivated.

I got 1.62 miles in for the day, but I did increase my pace and I hope I can start increasing my mileage at the faster pace soon.

Don't worry, I did both our miles today :witless:

8 miles to start with new year with a fancy PR on the 10k today.

Thanks SG for doing our miles for us. Too bad it doesn't go on our totals as well. Good job on the PR on the 10K. It sounds like you are really in the running groove lately.
