Tateman’s 10th: Running my way into the Scouts!

Recommended Posts

I ended up staying in the hotel room while the wife was doing homework.  I heard the winner bowled a 32.  A guy I know got 36.  He was 4th and took home $100

4th gets you $100? where do I sign up :-P

I wanted to ask actually, what's your opinion of fitbit? I was thinking of getting one as endomondo (phone app) doesn't seem to work too well and now that I'm trying to get back to work I'd like to try and do more in the day, just moving around and whatnot and think it might help me stay motivated to do so...

I hate running on treadmills! The constant moving under my feet, and knowing that I can't just 'stop' really bugs me... I'd always much rather go outside to run! So well done on sticking it out for 20 minutes! Sounds like you had a great time, and sometimes thats more important than being strict with everything :)

Yup, I would rather run outside for sure!  I liked that I got most of what I wanted to get done.  Just proves I can actually get out and do it, even when on vacation or something.

Cool, you ran after all. But as LadyWitch said, I hate treadmills, too. Like machines with weight lifting they feel unnatural and you always have to adjust speed. I tried treadmills some time ago and decided it wasn't for me. Cycling is a much better alternative. ;)

Yeah, I started off pretty fast, then slowed it down a bit, then even slowed it a bit more.  Then I left it at 4.7 mph I think it was.  It was working out to about what I thought my normal type of run was.  I probably could have cycled for a bit too.  They surprisingly had a bit of equipment there to use.

looking good ;) I LOVE that you are "doing it anyway" with the runs...I'm doing it with my yoga too lately and it's making a difference :)

One step at a time.  Even if I don't feel liek it, I want to get past that and just do it. :)

haha I know right :)

So personally, I really enjoy my Fitbit One a lot.  When I was buying one, the wrist banded flex version was just coming out.  So I decided to go with the one.  Mostly because I thought the flex would be too small with my wrist.  Someone had bought me a Jawbone Up as a Secret Santa gift last year.  I thought it was actually decent too, but felt like it didn't track my steps as well as my Fitbit.  One man thing is that it has no way to know if I am stepping if I am pushing a stroller or cart or something.  So that always bugged me a bit.  I think software wise, the Up was great on the phone interface, but had no website that I could use on the desktop.  I hated that.  Fitbit is excellent on the website (I don't even have the premier account you can get), but the phone version isn't as good.  It is perfectly fine for my needs, but I really prefer the web interface vs the mobile one.

I do really love my Garmin Watch too.  It doesn't have a step counter in it, but some of the newer ones like the Forerunner 15 do.  You can also get a shoe pod to help track steps as well with them.  Plus, I really like the Garmin connect software for looking at my runs.

I have run into a little problem with all these devices connected together on sites.  So I have fitbit connected with the endomondo, and myfitnesspal.  The garmin connect software is also connected to the myfitnesspal site.  So there are a few times when it doubles up my run.  Not that big of a deal, but maybe I shouldn't have connected everything together I guess.  ;)

Also, my wife has the FitBit Force that got recalled.  It never bugger her skin, so she never sent it in.  Lots of people at her work has them too.  Some people started taking their fitbit flexes back though and trying other devices.  A few of them had then stop working for them.  My One has been awesome since I got it, and hasn't showed any signs of any problems yet.  I clip it in my pants pocket.  I wear it so just the clip is exposed to the outside world.  The main body faces in towards my pocket.  I've never caught it on on anything.

Fitbit sounds really good then, thanks for all the information. I think I will definitely buy something from that range, the only annoying thing is there doesn't seem to be one that does everything, they all have different features but there isn't like a 'mega fitbit' that does everything, guess I'll have to work out what's most important to me :)

Yup, no problem :)

Tateman, it's just about time for... the full. metal. alchemist!!!!!!!!!!!!

You are right! ;)  Though, I might do it tomorrow morning vs today since I still need to run, and it is late.  We will see.

Great work!  Good for you sticking with the running even in the face of having to use a treadmill!!!

Thanks.  I hope to never have to treadmill again, but at least now I know I can haha.

*pant*  *wheeze* *pant*  there you are. Jeez man, I almost didn't catch you.

I am getting faster :D

Took forever today, but here is my week summary:

Goal #1:  Get Faster!

Ok, so I did get out 3 times this week and got in runs.  They were not all as expected though.  Run 1 was the best, even got a new PR.  1 mile in 10:58.  Run 2 was rough.  Was tired, and out of energy.  Had to cut one sprint out of my "normal" set, but I still managed to run for 20 minutes.  Last scheduled run was suppose to be my 3 mile run.  I didn't get that done, though I did make the effort to run.  I ran on a treadmill for the first time.  Only got in about 20 minutes of actual running though.  Walking was pretty decent.  I technically didn't go out for a specific 2nd walk on Friday night, but I still got in lots of walking around the hotel and casino areas.  So while things didn't go perfect, I am still pleased overall.  6/6 in points

Goal #2:  Get Stronger - Workout time!

Ok, not out to a great start here.  Being tired out from lack of sleep, made it much easier to give in to my bad side.  So workout 1 was super late, and not what i planned.  I did at least do some pushups and squats.  Workout 2 was just about the same, only just some pushups done.  Workout 3 was skipped when I was in Reno.  I could have very well gone down to the fitness center there and did some things.  I just gave into the bad side of me again.  Too many excuses.  1.5/3 points this week feels about right.

Goal #3:  Get Healthier - Food and Exercise Tracking

So far so good here.  Even with traveling, I was entering in my food choices.  The only struggle I had was I didn't enter in anything for a couple of salads I had with meals.  I could have guessed and added some generic info, but it was a bit of a pain on the phone.  Overall though, I think I did do good here.  Giving myself a slight point deduction for not adding in the salads.  6.5/7 points

Goal #4:  Compete in all the side challenges

I did in fact complete this first mini challenge.  I decided I would floss my teeth each day during the week.  I was 7 out of 7 :)  No grading on this, I just want to make sure I participate in the weekly challenges.  So a Pass ;)

Goal #5:  Finish the edx.org Introduction to Linux course!

I kept putting this off more and more, but did make some progress finally on Sunday.  Now in the middle of chapter 4.  For the coming week, I want to get to it more then just one day during the week.

So there we have it.  14/16 points.  87%  Not a bad start.  Room for me to improve on ;)

On a side not, apparently I gained 6 pound in Reno.  I was 260.4 on Friday before I left, and 266.3 this morning.  Luckily, I don't let that get me down.  I know I can easily fluctuate with weight in the past.  Plus, I am guessing it will be gone in a couple of days.

Not a bad start at all.  You'll build momentum with the workouts soon and be rockin' them.

Yeah, I figure it will come along as I progress more :)

A great start to the challenge -- here's to rocking out on Week 2!

Thanks.  Week 2 is going to get dominated! :)

Man, I had such an up and down moment when running last night.  I wasn't watching my time on my watch, just focusing on the fartleks.  I usually get a buzz once I finish a mile.  So I look and see 9:48 for the mile.  So I am really happy.  Like my fastest time by a minute.  I get done with my run and take a picture for instagram

Then I check the Garmin connect site and see that my GPS signal was crazy for a few minutes at the beginning

So no new PR this time haha.  Ahh well, maybe next time!

This morning is starting off decent.  I woke up and did the Full Metal workout

Just 3 sets this time.  After the workout I took my son for a walk in his stroller.

Excellent week and that run rocks!  Good job.  I know you say there is room for improvements but I think you had an excellent week considering how busy it was for you.

Thanks :)

Yay! Nice job on your 3 sets! That's about how far I got last night. :)

I was thinking last night that the workout tomorrow I will try for 4 sets, then 5 sets on Saturday :)

Nice one on the record mile, but it is hard to keep up that kind of energy each run so you are doing really great! Well done on week 1

Well, I had some jacked up GPS, so not a real record yet ;)  But I do feel like I am getting better.

I am doing pretty good on my walks this week so far too.  Both Monday and Tuesday I was over 10k steps on each day.  It will be interesting to see if I do this well all week.

Ok, the last few days, I have been struggling a bit with food.  Was getting into full on self sabotage phase it was feeling like.  Yesterday I was almost doing good, then ate out, and had too much.  Plus as typical fast food, it was way high on sodium.  So yesterday I had over 5000mg of sodium :(  Almost 3000 calories too.  So because of the poor eating, and I had it a bit late, my run suffered.

So it was a struggle from the get go.  I felt really sluggish.  It had been 3 hours since I ate, yet it still felt like a brick in my stomach.  My first lap was basically just telling myself to run and don't stop.  So many times I was just ready to stop and walk a bit.  But, eventually just kept going.

That is my run.  The sprints I wasn't going all out, but I was putting in effort to go faster.  I was really trying to jumpstart my whole body into going I guess.  The last sprint I went all out as fast as I could go.

Today has been much better.  I didn't make some of the food I wanted to, but tomorrow I will.  I'll make Spaghetti sauce tomorrow to have with spaghetti squash.  I am also going to toss together a chicken and vegetable soup on the slow cooker.

I got out and did a walk this morning, but didn't get out for a second one.  Also got my workout done, just recently ;)  Plus the bonus part is I did great on food today.  I was a little bit hungry though.  I was mostly focus on trying to get lower sodium on the day.  1926mg of sodium today.  Much better then the previous few days.  So maybe I am going to be able to climb out of self sabotage land.

4 and then 5 sets? Alright man, you're on.

I'll have you know I did 3 sets tonight.  Then I came on here and saw this.  So I jumped off to do the 4th set :D  So I will do 5 sets on Saturday :)

great work.  Technology is great until it goes wacky and creates a "gotcha" moment like that.  That full metal workout looks impressive!  Well Done!

Yeah, this was the first time m watch messed up that badly.  I have had the GPS on my phone go crazy a few times.  The workout isn't too bad.  I know it must be working, because I have had some muscle soreness after the first one haha.

Great job on that mile! Way to go!

That workout you posted looks nice; I am gonna have to try that when I am visiting my fiancèe.

It is actually pretty decent.  Not a bad first one to get back into.
