Brekketehcie Rides Again!

Ages ago I crawled my way through a 6-week challenge. But then I was overwhelmed by a Wave of Crazy crashing on the Shore of Life and totally let all the progress I had fought for slip away. But, I shall not go down with the ship! I shall not surrender! I’m here to try again. I feel like, even though I did a challenge, it was so long ago that I should start out properly as the N00b I am. 

 

Many moons ago, I studied in Northern Ireland and was invited to go on a 10 day cycling trip down the Irish coast. It sounded epic! Getting to see all the sleepy towns not on the train lines! Getting to see the ocean! Getting to drink the beer! But I turned the offer down because I was "too out of shape." I knew that I wasn’t fit enough to even attempt something of that nature. I have regretted it for years!

 

My over-arching goal is to be in a position to say yes to those kinds of epic-amazing opportunities. I want to feel strong, and have confidence that my body can do the things I want to do.

 

SO, that being said…

For this challenge I am focused on running my first ever 5k. I’m actually running it about half-way through – on October 12th. So training for that, then not letting myself slack off afterward is key. I am also in a wedding in Mid-November, so working on looking extra fabulous wouldn’t hurt.  :redface:

 

My 3 Main Quests are:

 

1)   Run 3x a week* 18/18 = A, 15-17/18 = B, 12-14/18 = C, 11> = F

*This has a caveat that I can sub 1 run a week for a long bike ride/swim for cross-training purposes. Since I’m a N00b runner, I have some joint pain as my body adjusts (I’m going to see a doctor tomorrow!). Cross training = endurance training without the joint strain!

A = +2 DEX, +2 STA; B = +1 DEX, +1 STA, C = +.5 DEX, +.5 STA; F = 0

 

2)   Strength training 1x a week  - this will be graded as a P/F (unless injury or illness prevent a strength work out)

Ideally it would be 2x, but I know from the past that trying to work out more than 3-4x a week for me results in failure, especially as I’m building a habit. So, for now, the goal is 1x a week, with bonus for extras.

P = +3 STR, Bonus +.5 for every extra strength workout I do!

 

3)   Kick Dairy!  - 12 or less = A, 13-18 = B, 18-23 = C, 24+ = F

Aside from my designer whey protein powder and 2T of sugar-free creamer in my morning coffee (which I know is something to work on, but baby steps!), I want to kick dairy from my diet. As a vegetarian, I have used dairy as a protein source pretty regularly. I want to give grace that there will be times when a scoop of ice cream or a slice of pizza are allowed. But not daily. So, I will allot 2 dairy meals each week.

A = +2 CON, B = +1, C = +.5, F = 0

 

In addition to these 3 Main Quests, I have 2 Life Quests

 

1)   Sleep – 27-30 = A, 20-26 = B, 16-20 = C, 15> = F

I am the WORST about getting wrapped up in nonsense things (like finishing this post!) and not getting to bed in a timely manner. That makes it so much harder to stay motivated for my workouts and my job, which is currently gearing up for the RETURN OF STUDENTS OMG (I work at a university). So, my goal is that Sunday – Thursday nights I have the light out by 11pm.

A = +2 CAR, B = +1, C = +.5, F = 0

 

2)   Al-Anon – Pass/Fail (barring injury/illness)

I’ve just started attending Al-Anon meetings. My mom’s an alcoholic (and has been my entire life) and I am finally owning that I need to be in recovery if I am ever going to be an emotionally healthy and whole person. So, my challenge to myself is to go to 1 meeting each week. There are a bunch I can choose from, so there are no good reasons for me not to go.

Pass = +2 WIS

 

I have other goals that I think will be met through these specific targets – like moving up 2 levels over-all in the Academy, and, specifically leveling up to a 6 in nutrition. But for this first time back in the saddle, I want to have attainable goals that will help me build habits and momentum!

 

So now for the EXTRA FUN STUFF – LOOT!

 

For every Quest I complete with an ‘A’ I get to buy 1 album form Itunes/Amazon! (Super Excited!)

If I complete ALL THE QUESTS with an ‘A’ then I get a new Look Human shirt!

 

 

I’m super excited. I have a 5K, a work Conference, and a big concert all during this 6 Week Challenge. But, you know, this is real life. The Waves of Crazy don’t stop a’coming. We just have to get better at withstanding them.

 

I hope y’all will join me. I’m going to need all the encouragement I can get!

I like your quest to kick dairy - it does really bad things to my body, so I can't do ice cream/milk/yogurt without paying for it afterwards. :(  Cheese in moderation is okay, but too much is still a bad thing!

Looks like a really solid challenge, you've got motivation spelled out for each bit. I like the sleep piece, its so key to everything and an issue I struggle with as well.

Shaaraway - I LOVE Look Human! I have 3 shirts already! I think that I'm going to get the Self Rescuing Princes shirt (with Leia! AH!) Or one of the Disney Princess doing Squats. 

I just have to ace all the quests...

 

Amdhiel - thanks! I am one of those folks that needs 8 hours. There's no 2 ways about it. So, making it a habit/priority will be essential if I plan on being able to sustain my workouts. I'll be in your cheering section!

welcome back. I hear you on the Al-Anon.  It's not funny having to live with the consequences of a choice that wasn't your own.  I wish you luck on that front.

Blaidd - thanks so much! I figured that part of the reason I couldn't stick with my fitness commitments was because emotionally I was still in turmoil. If I'm binge eating ice cream to deal with ALL THE FEELS then I'll never be able to get in and stay in good shape. You Can't Outrun Your Fork.

 

Thanks for the encouragement and the link. I'm also interested in eventually doing triathlons - so I'm interested in some kind of hybrid Scout-Ranger mix. I want to be strong, with lots of endurance. :)

belly (because I have a lot of that between my waist & hips): 42.5"

bicep - R: 11.75", L: 12.5

thigh - R: 23.5", L: 23"

dress size: about a 12

 

Hopefully all of these will shrink in the next 6 weeks!

Hi there! what an great challenge! I will be cheering you on the whole time!

 

I was surprised to find Al-Anon on your list. Only because I am 10 years into that program. So if you ever need someone to vent to, through the anonymity of the internet, or anything, you just send me a message! My father was an alcoholic, my father in law is one too, and my sister was a drug addict. So I can relate to emotional turmoil hands down!!

Shaarawy - sometimes I can only imagine getting through one more day without binge eating. Like, right now I want ALL THE CHEESE. The challenge hasn't even started yet! *headdesk*

Oh gosh cheese is my serious weakness. I can't have any in the house or I will just start gnawing on the block... but one cheese - free day leads to two, and sometimes three, and the more the better!!

OMGeezy yes! I could just eat cheese and crackers all day long. It's like my happy place. I was a vegan for 1.5 years, so I know I *can* give it up, but golly I don't really want to.

 

My housemate is the worst. He loves to binge on wine and cheese. At least 1 night a week (sometimes 2 or 3) that's his dinner - half (or whole!) bottle of wine and cheese & crackers. He works out a bunch, so I think it's way of justifying the guilty pleasure. It is constantly tempting.

I know all about the binge eating!!! Today marks my 32nd day without binge eating - w00t. But seriously before then I have had BED for 4ish years - basically since I separated with my husband while I was pregnant with our second daughter. Ah the memories. 

 

So we can beat the binge together - when our powers unite - we are captain don't binge! (or something)

Lish - OMG yes! binge eating usually means me deal with stress/ not want to have feelings. Oh pesky feelings... Good on you for going 32 days! that's awesome! 

 

I'm trying to channel the nervous energy into more productive outlets, but so far, that has not been the case. But, One day at a time, right?

 

I suppose an unofficial quest is "Defeat Binge Eating"  :nevreness:
