I find that inclined push ups translate better to full push ups anyway...

I do as many as I can with as small an incline as I can then gradually work my way up... so I might do 3 like this... then go to something higher... then finally work at the table or something :)

 

 

I can do a hundred knee push ups... but only 3 fulls... :D

I have been doing them from the counter height. .. today I found a concrete bench and did 15 at 45°.

I never got the strength from knee pushups, but I've read is hard to get the right form with your knees.

Only managed one and a half reps of the bodyweight workout. It didn't go so great, pretty much everything was OK with Neila Rey's modifications , until I tried to do a normal pushup, not happening, stupidly tried the modification (why did I think putting weight directly on my knee was a good idea?!?) and promptly collapsed. Wall push ups are too easy, I wonder if I can put a crate under my thighs or hips and push up from there... hmmmm

Hello. I'm another of your Accountabilibuddies.

 

Give Convict Conditioning a try. Leave out the prison thing-y sales pitch from Paul "Tsatsouline" Wade and focus on the series: six progressions that begin with you lifting your feet from the ground sat on a chair and counting a rep, to you doing handstand pushups. The progressions are built to be almost too easy in the beginning and seemingly impossible at the master level.

 

My own progression from YAYOG: chest height pushup, hip height pushup, diamond hip height pushup, classical pushup. I mean, I've changed the grip, not the height, when I was good enough for the height but not yet for the reps. Got it?

Just putting the mini quest here in case I need to refer to it again-


  • Is your overall quest achievable (over a short or long period of time)?  Is it reasonable? My overall quest (feel like I'm achieving something, get stronger, get leaner) is intentionally wishywashy at the moment, because my health is so uncertain I don't want to stop trying AGAIN because yet another seemingly easy goal has been moved out of my reach. I dunno if that's a good thing.

  • Do your 3 quests all build towards your main quest in little ways, or are you taking on too much? Do your quests have sub-quests or is it just one thing to focus on? My quests are all specific, each covers a different area and they build on things I can already do.

  • Are your main goals realistic? Can you scale them to smaller steps to fit your life better, even if it will make it take a little longer to achieve them? My main goals aren't a huge stretch from where I am now, and ones of them builds incrementally to avoid being unrealistic.

  • Are your goals able to be measured and tracked?  What will you use to track them? Easily measured with a pedometer or Zombies, Run. I'm using a 3"x4" card in my waller to record the whole 6 weeks in one place so I can keep an eye on my progress.

  • How are you grading your goals?  Are they pass/fail (“every dayâ€, “not even once over the six weeksâ€)?  Is there a reward for the effort, or are you only grading yourself on whether or not you “lose the weight†or “run the distanceâ€? I tried to grade my goals when I first set up my profile, but after two hours of me crying and my partner trying to explain the maths we decided it was more productive to leave that til the 3 week mark at least.

  • What is your plan for continuing/altering/grading those goals if you become ill or injured? I already have all the modifications for the bodyweight workout noted down as I know I'll have to refer to them A LOT. For the mileage and dancing goals I'll halve them if I get to ill to complete them.

  • Did you take into consideration any special occasions (Labour Day, Independence Day, birthdays, anniversaries, etc) that may occur during the challenge?  What modifications do you need to build into your goals for those? Only one event, going to a Night Vale live show, fortunately the venue is far enough from the hotel to make up my mileage. Plus the amount of time I'll have to spend on my costume on the day will more than make up my life quest time.

  • Do any of your main goals conflict with each other? Will one goal make it hard to do another? Nope.

  • Do you already have the time in your schedule to actually complete the goals you’ve set?  If not, what are you planning to do to make time for them? Yes. I'll just have to cut down the time I spend watching the same 40 episodes of CSI  :tongue:

  • Are you trying to build multiple habits, or is all your energy focused on your main quest? Multiple habits but they all feed into the overall quest.

Thank you everyone! I've swapped out the bodyweight workout for Neila Rey's Catwoman workout http://neilarey.com/workouts/catwoman-workout.html on the advice of my physio. 2.5 miles in last two days, an hour of dance so far this week.

I agree with everyone else - you seem to be doing great!  When in doubt, find what will work for your particular body.  You shouldn't need to be in pain to exercise, right? ^_^

 

How did the living room dancing go, by the way~?

Thank you! I used to do ballet many moons ago, now I'm mostly doing belly dancing and burlesque stuff, hoping to get the go ahead from physio to do classes next year.

I agree with everyone else - you seem to be doing great!  When in doubt, find what will work for your particular body.  You shouldn't need to be in pain to exercise, right? ^_^

 

How did the living room dancing go, by the way~?

 

Unfortunately all exercise is pain for me in some way or another. It's mostly about getting through it in a way that means I can still walk the next day (I did a burlesque dance class in huge heels once, it was amazing but I literally couldn't stand on my own for two days after. Thats what I need to avoid in future :)

 

Everything has stalled this weekend, I'm having horrendous problems with my pelvis going all over the place. I did manage to walk a mile yesterday, and I'm going to drag my husband out for a mile walk today (daren't attempt it on my own), but I only managed half the Catwoman workout before I ended up on the floor in tears. Going to fall short on this weeks dancing as well. Boooo

I hear the whole "it's gonna hurt no matter what" feeling - that's how I get with my pelvis/low back, and I sometimes think "you know what, I know what's wrong and this isn't going to make it any worse, it just hurts" and push through, and then some other times I think maybe pain is a good sign to stop. It's tough, finding the right balance of being healthy and being comfortable. You know your body best and what you can/should do! Great job this week and here's to week 2! :)

Just dropping in to add my support, Chromaggia. I'm on a similar path and I know how tough it's been for me. With a child and partner myself, I have such amazing inspirations to move forward with my goals. Without them, this would be a lot harder.

Added an extra layer to my physiotherapy today, now I'm going to be learning to stand on one leg again. So far I've managed to learn "falling over in a comic fashion" :/ it feels really weird doing all these "basic" exercises and struggling so much with them. I feel like I'm in a "recovering from a car crash" montage all the time, but without the car crash. It's hard to accept that a everyday medical event has left me this injured and helpless, like I don't deserve all the assistance cos all the other women get over it so quickly so why am I left in a mess. More bone scans tomorrow. Yay :/

Walked 2 miles today though, despite the pain.

What styles do y'all do? I primarily study/perform ATS... well, I did before I moved in July. I was in a troupe back where I used to live and I miss them so dearly. Between recovering from hip surgery and time/money constraints I'm having to take a sabbatical until January at the earliest and I seriously miss it!

I'm not doing great. Wiped out from stress over bone scan, blood tests (really low vitD despite taking all the supplements, no ferritin, various infection markers, boo) and today I had 20 minute argument with my GP- two separate psychs and the relevant specialist agree I need a surgical procedure, he disagrees with it (for either religious or moral reason) and I can't get it without his permission. Finally won but this is the third time I've had to fight him on this and I am so so tired.

Didn't manage any walking on Tuesday, too much work plus time out for bone scan. Did 2 miles Monday, Wednesday and today. Up to three reps on the catwoman workout.

Ugh. :( That's rough - I'm sorry you've had to fight for the care that you need. I'm glad you got permission, though. It took a while to finally get them to allow it. Nothing like being told you can't have what's best for your body. Grrrrr.

 

I hope you can do something enjoyable and relaxing to try and wash away some of the stress of the week! Great job on the walking this week - you were aiming to move up to 2 miles in week 3, right? You're ahead of schedule! :)

Ugh, what a time you've had. I used to work in healthcare and it always made me flipping furious when I'd hear of a patient who wasn't being heard by her provider. I've since met a bunch of fantastic patient advocates across the country who are helping to turn the ship around, but it's a slow process with something as entrenched as western medicine. I've also switched doctors a number of times if I got one who was more interested in meeting a quota or showing off his/her knowledge than actually listening to me.

Yeah, that's similar to what I'm having to beg for, I should have received a date for a consultation by now but I haven't so I suspect he's lied to me. Again. He outright said he'd agree it in an instant for my husband, cos it's "normal" for men. He is an arse (excuse my language).

 

Thank you for the support, we went swimming again, and I've arranged the first public sales event in two years which is a big step forward towards me getting back on my business feet. Today I walked 4 miles! 15 of that was to a gastropub and back though so I've probably had a weeks with of calories. I might actually manage my walking goal!

I have basically had two years of not being listened to by a whole variety of medical practitioners (nearly died and permanently injured as a result), I really do think it's a sexism thing so much of the time, everything was dismissed as overreaction until brutally proven otherwise. "Oh pelvic pain! EVERYONE gets that... See if I lean on it *crunch* ARGH your pelvis shouldn't do that!!" I'm not a wuss, I walked around on a broken foot for two weeks because it wasn't that much different from my normal pain levels, so when I tell them something is wrong I really mean it! I'm running out of doctors to switch to, there are only two GP surgeries in our area and theres only two doctors left that I've not annoyed!

1. I'm not able to achieve my dance goal as my other three goals have combined to put my pain levels through the roof. Just being on my feet is making me feel physically ill.

Yes!, You can always swap out your goals if they do not work for you. I'm sad to hear about all the issues you are facing with regards to dealing with the healthcare field. I hope one of the two doctors left will be able to help you out.
