Ornata - Loosen Up!

Ornata

Recommended Posts

For as long as I can remember I've felt sluggish, stiff and inflexible, like some kind of animated stone golem that time forgot.

golem%20elemental_www.wall321.com_41.jpg

Okay, that sounds a little too impressive. I guess it would be more accurate to say that I feel like a turtle.

As great as turtles are, I want to be dextrous. I want to be able to jump, climb, and balance on things. Basically, I want nothing more than to master control over my own body.

Rebel Introduction: I just wanted to say that it's great to be here. I've been casually lurking the forums for pretty much the entire duration of the last challenge and come to the conclusion that this community is really supportive and positive. I'm generally shy on the Internet and reluctant to join large communities. In fact, I chickened out on joining the last 6-Week Challenge because I knew I would be moving across the country and used that as an excuse not to commit. It's too bad I didn't join that challenge, because I did a surprisingly good job at sticking to my fitness goals and only missed 1 workout day despite spending a lot of time cooped up in hotel rooms!

Ornata's 1st Challenge: Loosen Up!

Main Quest: From Golem to Wood Elf

Improve flexibility and balance, resulting in an overall increase in dexterity. Not sure how to make progress in this goal measurable (any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated), but I feel like this is something I'll want to constantly work on improving anyway.

Quest 1:  Become flexy-bendy

I will do a routine that works on flexibility and balance 3 times per week (on my off-days). Right now I can only touch my toes when I'm really warmed up, and just barely. Will do some research on how to approach this routine before the challenge officially starts. Starting to look like yoga might be the best option, but I've never done yoga before in my life so that'll be interesting.

  • A: Missed 0-2 days
  • B: Missed 3-5 days
  • C: Missed 5+ days

Quest 2: Keep momentum going

I've been doing bodyweight workouts every other day for the past 8 weeks, and I think I'm in love. There's just something incredibly satisfying about "leveling up" and progressing to a more challenging form of the exercise. I started out doing BBWW but switched to startbodyweight.com's routine and I love it. For this quest, I want to keep up my streak and continue to do bodyweight exercises every other day.

  • A: Missed 0-2 days
  • B: Missed 3-5 days
  • C: Missed 5+ days

Quest 3: Have fun with it

Once per day, I will do something fun that is agility-related and gently challenges my ability to control my movements. This could be something like: climbing something, hanging off something, jumping over an obstacle, balancing on something, rolling, hanging upside-down, or similar. It can be laughably simple as long as I do something in that category.

I find this kind of thing to be incredibly liberating, yet I never do it for fear of looking weird or childish to others.

  • A: Missed 0-3 days
  • B: Missed 4-7 days
  • C: Missed 7+ days

Life Quest: Okay, maybe this is a little too meta, but for this first life quest I'd like to make sure I'm posting regularly on the forums. This mainly includes posting in my own challenge topic and the topics of others (particulary fellow Level 1's). My first instinct is to be an Internet hermit, so having this goal to remind me will be a huge help.

Motivation: I need to be at peak physical condition to pursue my dream career in natural resources. I just moved from sea level to the mountains to start a new job in that field. When I went on my first hike here, the trail's 900-foot elevation change kicked my ass and was a great wake-up call for me to get my act together. Besides that, I'm sick of feeling like my body is just a vehicle to haul my brain around; I love the outdoors and want to make the most of my new location.

You might notice that i've added an Assassins' tag to your thread.  This isn't to pigeonhole you into particular guild, but rather to bring one of their ambassadors here to offer you encouragement, support or advice.  Your goals this challenge fit well with the overall spirit of their guild and you are more than welcome to pop into their Den and introduce yourself to them.  You are also more than welcome to pop me a message anytime.

On behalf of the Assassins' Guild Ambassadors, welcome to your first official Nerd Fitness challenge!  It seems like you have some interests that align with the spirit of our guild, so I'm extending the official (black-gloved, naturally) hand of welcome on behalf of all of us!  We love bodyweight workouts, and generally, we're all about having a good time (jumping off of things highly encouraged!).  I've got a few links for you that might help you along:

Here's a link to the Assassin Guild Info & Announcements.  You can also feel free to pop into the Assassins' Den guild chat thread and get in on the fun.  Everyone's friendly and glad to answer questions - or spam your inbox with gifs, either or, really.

We're also trying something new this time around: in the Accountabilibuddies section of the forum, you'll notice a Level 1 Assassin Initiates Q&A/Chat  thread.  Feel free to pop in there if you're thinking of donning the black post-challenge to meet other newbies with similar interests and interact with some current Assassins as well!

We've also got a Phone Book in the works (coming soon - I or one of my partners in crime will link you when it's up) which will list guild members based on the skills they're working on, so you can go check out others with similar interests.  Your third goal sounds like a slow ease into parkour - we have everything from newbies to experts in the guild, so come by and take advantage of their expertise!  And if you ever want to talk flexibility, you can always hit me up!  It's one of my passions.  I hope you'll find it easy and stress-free to be social here, as well - everyone's invested on your success!

We'll be checking in on you as the challenge goes on, but it looks like you're ready and eager to go.  So get out there and kill those goals!

(Note that I did not say assassinate those goals.  I would be proud of myself for resisting the pun, but I seem to have made it now after all.)

Thanks so much for all the responses and encouragement, guys!! I really do appreciate it! So far I've been really impressed with how positive and encouraging everyone has been in this forum. You guys have set the bar really high and I hope I can even come close to matching it.

Update for 9/12 and 9/13:

Quest 1: Become flexy-bendy

Haven't gotten a chance to look into some of the yoga resources I found while stalking Shimitana's challenge topic, so yesterday I just warmed up for about 10 minutes and extended my normal stretching routine out to about 20 minutes. Felt great, especially working on the tension I've been having near the balls of my feet.

0 days missed so far.

Quest 2: Keep momentum going

Yup! This morning I did the following:

  • 3x8 Bulgarian split squats --> ready to progress to beginner shrimps next time
  • 3x7 pike push-ups
  • 3x8 flat straight leg raises --> ready to progress to forearm knee raises next time
  • 3x4 push-ups on side of bathtub (I'm really behind on push-up progression because of some painful Rice Krispies I had in my elbow a couple weeks back. Frustrating)
  • 30 seconds side plank both sides

I noticed today that my right side is all-around weaker than my left, so I need to work on evening that out. I think what I'll do is do whatever exercise on my right side first, then match that number of reps/seconds with my left.

0 days missed so far.

Quest 3: Have fun with it

Climbed and balanced on the boulders near the place I taught yesterday during my lunch break. Will go hiking today, so I'll be sure to do something fun at some point there as well.

Ho, my fellow Queen of Swords shipmate!  I'm looking forward to our progress over the next six weeks  :)  The high seas have never known terror like they're about to know!  (Or, you know, mild disquiet, if terror isn't your thing.)

I'm totally jealous of the climbable boulders you've got.  I loved climbing all the things when I was a kid, and one of my longer long-term goals is to find new things to climb.  Oh, and to become strong enough to climb things again.  Dangling helplessly is not as much fun.

Update for 9/13 - 9/15

Quest 1: Become flexy-bendy

9/14: I almost forgot completely! God I'm so scatterbrained. So I did it, I just did it in my sleeping clothes hahaha

Today I'm going to look into yoga resources after work.

0 days missed so far.

Quest 2: Keep momentum going

Yes! But my balance is pretty terrible still.

Beginner shrimps: 3x4 with balance assistance

Pike push-ups: 3x8 --> ready to progress to diamond pike push-ups next time

Forearm knee raises: 3x8 --> these were surprisingly easy for me, so I feel confident moving to hanging knee raises next time

Elevated legs bench dip: 3x4

Side plank: 40s each side

I still have nothing to do assisted pull-ups or even inverted rows on D: Soon, though!

0 days missed so far.

Quest 3: Have fun with it

9/13: Went on a scramble with my boyfriend up to a little alcove on a cliffside. Huge boulders to climb around. Wasn't expecting there to be any good scrambles on the hike we were doing, so that was a great surprise and wicked fun. My other half isn't very interested in fitness normally so I like to go out with him and do active things that we both think are fun instead of trying to get him to work out with me.

9/14: Spent most of the day cooped up indoors, so I tried doing a wall handstand just for fun. My body is really not used to being upside-down! Still a nice way to break up my day though.

tumblr_inline_n2k85yNYgI1rnvwt1.gif

9/15: I've been eying this one tree at work for days. It's bent at the perfect angle for me to get up there and try to hang off it. I want to do it so bad, but I'm worried my weird actions will reflect poorly on the agency I work for (since I'll be in uniform when I do it). Maybe I'll go look at some more hidden trees and see what I can do during my lunch break today :)

0 days missed so far.

Life Quest: Stop being an internet hermit

I think I'm doing okay on this quest so far! It was a little intimidating at first, posting in the topics of complete strangers, but I'm starting to feel more comfortable with it. I might start branching out into other forums beyond the Level 1 Club (and Accountabilibuddies) soon. I also have a few people's topics I still want to post in.

I'm from the prairie Midwest (and went to college here), so... yes, climbable trees not widely available.  There was one on campus I tried to climb a few times but security always made me climb down.  It's a secret dream of mine to move to Seattle or something and find lots and lots of things to climb  :D

Ha, I just remembered, the alternative mascot of my school was a turtle!

Good luck finding more trees  :)

For as long as I can remember I've felt sluggish, stiff and inflexible, like some kind of animated stone golem that time forgot.

Okay, that sounds a little too impressive. I guess it would be more accurate to say that I feel like a turtle.

Lol.  I understand the feeling. I've always been the slow, lumbering giant.  There's a reason in 4th grade I was nicknamed 'Pokey Puppy'.

Your goals seem absolutely fantastic (and rather similar to mine...) I love that you are looking to overcome self-consciousness in order to pursue some healthy play out in the world that will make you stronger!! I also want to high-five you for aspiring to put yourself out there and encourage folks on the forums. I have a tendency to read read read and forget to comment, so I'll be working on that as well.
