Ornata Posted September 12, 2014 Report Share Posted September 12, 2014 For as long as I can remember I've felt sluggish, stiff and inflexible, like some kind of animated stone golem that time forgot. Okay, that sounds a little too impressive. I guess it would be more accurate to say that I feel like a turtle. As great as turtles are, I want to be dextrous. I want to be able to jump, climb, and balance on things. Basically, I want nothing more than to master control over my own body. Rebel Introduction: I just wanted to say that it's great to be here. I've been casually lurking the forums for pretty much the entire duration of the last challenge and come to the conclusion that this community is really supportive and positive. I'm generally shy on the Internet and reluctant to join large communities. In fact, I chickened out on joining the last 6-Week Challenge because I knew I would be moving across the country and used that as an excuse not to commit. It's too bad I didn't join that challenge, because I did a surprisingly good job at sticking to my fitness goals and only missed 1 workout day despite spending a lot of time cooped up in hotel rooms! Ornata's 1st Challenge: Loosen Up! Main Quest: From Golem to Wood Elf Improve flexibility and balance, resulting in an overall increase in dexterity. Not sure how to make progress in this goal measurable (any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated), but I feel like this is something I'll want to constantly work on improving anyway. Quest 1: Become flexy-bendy I will do a routine that works on flexibility and balance 3 times per week (on my off-days). Right now I can only touch my toes when I'm really warmed up, and just barely. Will do some research on how to approach this routine before the challenge officially starts. Starting to look like yoga might be the best option, but I've never done yoga before in my life so that'll be interesting.A: Missed 0-2 daysB: Missed 3-5 daysC: Missed 5+ days Quest 2: Keep momentum going I've been doing bodyweight workouts every other day for the past 8 weeks, and I think I'm in love. There's just something incredibly satisfying about "leveling up" and progressing to a more challenging form of the exercise. I started out doing BBWW but switched to startbodyweight.com's routine and I love it. For this quest, I want to keep up my streak and continue to do bodyweight exercises every other day.A: Missed 0-2 daysB: Missed 3-5 daysC: Missed 5+ days Quest 3: Have fun with it Once per day, I will do something fun that is agility-related and gently challenges my ability to control my movements. This could be something like: climbing something, hanging off something, jumping over an obstacle, balancing on something, rolling, hanging upside-down, or similar. It can be laughably simple as long as I do something in that category. I find this kind of thing to be incredibly liberating, yet I never do it for fear of looking weird or childish to others.A: Missed 0-3 daysB: Missed 4-7 daysC: Missed 7+ days Life Quest: Okay, maybe this is a little too meta, but for this first life quest I'd like to make sure I'm posting regularly on the forums. This mainly includes posting in my own challenge topic and the topics of others (particulary fellow Level 1's). My first instinct is to be an Internet hermit, so having this goal to remind me will be a huge help. Motivation: I need to be at peak physical condition to pursue my dream career in natural resources. I just moved from sea level to the mountains to start a new job in that field. When I went on my first hike here, the trail's 900-foot elevation change kicked my ass and was a great wake-up call for me to get my act together. So far I've been really impressed with how positive and encouraging everyone has been in this forum. You guys have set the bar really high and I hope I can even come close to matching it. Update for 9/12 and 9/13: Quest 1: Become flexy-bendy Haven't gotten a chance to look into some of the yoga resources I found while stalking Shimitana's challenge topic, so yesterday I just warmed up for about 10 minutes and extended my normal stretching routine out to about 20 minutes. Felt great, especially working on the tension I've been having near the balls of my feet. 0 days missed so far. Quest 2: Keep momentum going Yup! This morning I did the following:3x8 Bulgarian split squats --> ready to progress to beginner shrimps next time3x7 pike push-ups3x8 flat straight leg raises --> ready to progress to forearm knee raises next time3x4 push-ups on side of bathtub (I'm really behind on push-up progression because of some painful Rice Krispies I had in my elbow a couple weeks back. Frustrating)30 seconds side plank both sidesI noticed today that my right side is all-around weaker than my left, so I need to work on evening that out. I think what I'll do is do whatever exercise on my right side first, then match that number of reps/seconds with my left. 0 days missed so far. Quest 3: Have fun with it Climbed and balanced on the boulders near the place I taught yesterday during my lunch break. So I did it, I just did it in my sleeping clothes hahaha Today I'm going to look into yoga resources after work. 0 days missed so far. Quest 2: Keep momentum going Yes! But my balance is pretty terrible still. My other half isn't very interested in fitness normally so I like to go out with him and do active things that we both think are fun instead of trying to get him to work out with me. 9/14: Spent most of the day cooped up indoors, so I tried doing a wall handstand just for fun. My body is really not used to being upside-down! Still a nice way to break up my day though. 9/15: I've been eying this one tree at work for days. It's bent at the perfect angle for me to get up there and try to hang off it. I want to do it so bad, but I'm worried my weird actions will reflect poorly on the agency I work for (since I'll be in uniform when I do it). Maybe I'll go look at some more hidden trees and see what I can do during my lunch break today 0 days missed so far. It was a little intimidating at first, posting in the topics of complete strangers, but I'm starting to feel more comfortable with it.
