IceGiant355
What is your name? Icegiantinasgaard! What is your quest? To return to my playing weight as a college athleteWhat...is your plan?Main Quest: To get back to my old playing weight from the basketball years, and regain my Warrior/semi-Ranger status. That weight being 205 and 60-65 pounds from where I am today.Quest 1: Cut down the mightiest tree in the forest with...a herring! This is not an easy task, but it starts in the gym. I'm a warrior/ranger at heart, love nothing more than seeing how heavy an object I can pick up and put back down, and hate that the answer today is "not much". My former life means I know what I can be with enough of the right effort. Therefore, I will seek the path to my inner warrior through the 5x5 program.A = 18B = >15C = 12 > 15Quest 2: Oh, I see. Running away, eh?A true warrior must be capable of running, if only in short bursts to find the next victim. The only reason I ever ran before was because of basketball, and even then I only ran during practices and games. Rarely, if ever on my own time. I also lead a more active life back then and could get away with it. Therefore, I will become capable of running for 10 consecutive minutes at an average speed of 7mph (tried hitting the streets last week...it ended badly for my back, so it be the dreadmill for now).A = 10 minutes at 7 mph or betterB = 10 minutes at 6.5 - 6.9 mphC = 10 minutes at 6.0 - 6.4 mphQuest 3: We want...a shrubbery! It's difficult to call fruits and vegetables my nemesis. They're more like an old friend you haven't seen much lately, but, you know, without the cannibalism. This is the one area where I have the most work cut out. I struggle to follow my plans for all 3 daily meals usually because I forget what the plan was in the first place by the time the groceries are home. To survive in an extended battle, one must learn which plants are edible, and which to avoid. Therefore, I will consume something (healthful) originating from a plant at every meal. Ambitious? Perhaps, but growth requires a stretch and I won't hamstring my progress by failing with poor food choices.A = 95 - 126 mealsB = 80 - 94 mealsC = 63 - 79 mealsMotivation: I'd like to have some noble reason, but frankly it's just time to take care of myself. It's been too long since I've done anything for myself that mattered, so this is the first step. 7 ICEGIANT355Frost Giant"No matter what they send at us, we will never let it fall" - Amon Amarth"Pushing past the signs, don't let fear beat you inside; grow through the pain" - BattlecrossProfile - MyFitnessPal - Current Challenge - SKULL CRUSHERS Link to comment

Caramel
Dem Monty Python references!Looking good on your goals, I've been considering the 5x5 routine myself, and might start adopting it once I'm a little more familiar with the individual exercises. It'll be good to see someone else's experiences with it! We clearly differ in opinions regarding vegetables though, I'd definitely list vegetables among my enemies.I mean, have you ever, like, LOOKED at a mushroom? They're f**king terrifying! 1 'It's pointless to keep fighting. Why, Mr. Anderson? Why? Why do you persist?''Because I choose to.' Current 6 week challenge Link to comment
IceGiant355
I'm looking forward to new challenges with the 5x5. Took it for a test drive this morning, and it's deceptively challenging even using light Weights.Fun facts: I once spent 3 years as a vegan, and even then mushrooms were not my thing, so I agree wholeheartedly there. As a rule, I don't trust anything that thrives in the same environment as mold 2 ICEGIANT355Frost Giant"No matter what they send at us, we will never let it fall" - Amon Amarth"Pushing past the signs, don't let fear beat you inside; grow through the pain" - BattlecrossProfile - MyFitnessPal - Current Challenge - SKULL CRUSHERS Link to comment
Caramel
Yeah, I can imagine it'll be intense, keep us posted! Haha, good to know I'm not the only one who never leaves my back to a mushroom. I'd love to take up some form of interval training but I get pretty self-concious and the only place I can think of nearby that'd be available is a popular park. But I don't really feel like I'm achieving anything but a warm-up on a treadmill... 'It's pointless to keep fighting. Why, Mr. Anderson? Why? Why do you persist?''Because I choose to.' IceGiant355
I definitely understand feeling awkward doing the whole outdoor interval-type training, especially if you're the only one doing it. Last time I did anything like that, 14 of my closest friends were being tortured with me, so that took out all the anxiety right off. Are there times you could go when there aren't as many people around, and more importantly would that even help? Something that helped me get over my self-consciousness in the gym was reading an article here on NF (might have been How to Not Suck at the Gym) that reminded me no one cares what I'm doing. They're more worried about themselves. I bet it's the same in the park. Start small and don't treat it like a big deal, and eventually you'll be the badass in the park that people can't help but watch as they pass. Then again doing backflips off trees has a way of drawing attention... Well I work nights, which means i'll generally be able to get there around 5am, but I'm not sure if I'm down with sprinting around a park in the dead of night juust yet haha. I'll see how things go with doing lighter exercise on my off-gym days, and I might be able to make it before work at some point. aeshnidae
You can do interval training on the treadmill, although you'll have to be careful when speeding up and slowing down. FWIW, I do HIIT on the elliptical and it's great, in part because it's easy to change speed. I do 20 seconds high-intensity and 40 seconds moderate intensity. It definitely keeps the cardio more interesting and it's a great workout. =) 1 Aeshnidae, The Girl with the Dragonfly TattooHuman RangerLevel 4 | STR 9 | DEX 8 | STA 5 | CON 5 | WIS 8 | CHA 3 Aeshnidae Flips the Bird at Being Sick | Battle Log | Skull Crushers IIIIntro Post | MFP | 2nd Challenge "Fire bad, tree pretty.""Nothing but the rain..." IceGiant355
To get me to my running goal, I'm definitely hitting the treadmill on non-lift days, but that's a great idea! I might give it a whirl tomorrow morning. Luckily the treadmills at my gym do an awesome job at easing me into speed transitions, mostly because I have to press and hold the speed button (or single press) to get to where I want it. 1 ICEGIANT355Frost Giant"No matter what they send at us, we will never let it fall" - Amon Amarth"Pushing past the signs, don't let fear beat you inside; grow through the pain" - BattlecrossProfile - MyFitnessPal - Current Challenge - SKULL CRUSHERS Link to comment
