driscool stares down the future

Winter is coming, and testing times lie ahead. Though the keep seems secure there are enemies within and without the gates. Even among the clan itself not all are to be trusted. The demands of the king's men grow ever more onerous- the work that must be done to keep it all together is unceasing. Your progeny are growing strong but still require your guidance. And this is the year when you have decided to undergo the trials and rise within the guild of Givers of Universal Speech.

But you will not yield.

Main Quest: to remain fit and strong during a year when adding an intense course of study to my already busy work and family life is going to make things hectic and stressful at times; to be able to come out the other side next May without having regained the weight I've lost over the last two years, or fall out of the fitnesss habit.

Quest 1: to do (variations on) the beginners' bodyweight workout 3-4 times a week.

Quest 2: to do one HIIT session each week.

Quest 3: to eat 'paleo' (I have my doubts about the wisdom of the tag, but still) from Sunday evening to Saturday morning. I am not including in my definition of 'paleo' either pulses or cheese. I am including all forms of alcohol. I'm in two minds about dark chocolate.

Note to quest 1: I have already been doing this for nearly two weeks, and I'm making progress. I want to do a pull up, so I've been including inverted rows and dips. I dont have any dumb-bells so I'm not really doing the rows. Tend to do stepups as a warmup if at home, or if I hike to my nearby forest park and use the wooden gym there I use the walk there as the warmup.

Note to quest 2: I run. In fact a bet which I won/lost obliged me to do the Madrid half-marathon last year, and that was really when I got started taking it all seriously. My pbs are nothing to write home about, but they are already beyond my original goals. For what it's worth- HM 1:55:38, 10k 54:24, 5k 24:57. One thing I haven't done is much structured speedwork. I'm hoping to see good results from adding HIIT to one long and one or two easy runs a week, without getting injured (I have an Achiles niggle).

Note to quest 3: I am 182cm and currently 88.9kg, 38 years old. I've lost 20kg over the last two years or so. This puts me at 26.8 BMI, which is still 'overweight'. I don't really give much credence to the BMI- I mean, it says that at 62 kilos I'd still be within my healthy range! That just seems absurd to me, I haven't weighed that since I was about 12!  When I was 22 I was backpacking around South America on a budget, hiking often, playing football (soccer) oftenish, eating badly and partying hard...Colombian style you know. I never weighed less than I think about 85 kilos. My wife is currently severely overweight, to look at anyway, and pretty inactive- but her BMI is only 27.  But anyway, I'm curious to see what a supposedly healthy BMI looks like. So thats a shade under 83kg for me. So, cutting down on carbs, and taking my coffee black with no sugar (I drink like 3 or 4 coffees a day) made a really big difference when I started doing that around last December. The weekend stipulation is because basically Saturday lunchtime, Saturday dinnertime and Sunday lunchtime are very often social occasions, and I'm going to eat what people have cooked and what people are eating- just not to excess. The same goes for booze. I live in Madrid in Spain, and this is a culture where beer and wine are part of everyday life- though drunkenness is rare.

OK so here we go.

The keep must stand. You, as master of the keep must find a way through the coming turmoil without losing your hard won character attributes. Fortitude must be your watchword. Some may doubt your quest can be achieved, many others have other goals for you that will hinder your progress.

You will not yield.

Wanting to accomplish your fitness goals despite having such a busy schedule -- what an inspiration! The sheer fact you're not willing to yield to excuses about being too busy (love your intro/outtro by the way :P) is admirable. I'll be cheering you on for sure.

Hope your Achilles feels better, too. Good luck!

Pre-quest miniquest: You must ride deep into the mountains to the legendary Fuenfría, and drink of the cold spring waters. The climb will be long and arduous. Your guide is fleet and agile- will you be able to keep up with him?

Which is to say I'm going cycling in the mountains with a buddy who is a fairly serious mountain biker. His bike is soooo much better than mine, too. Not difficult that though. We'll probably do around 50k with more than 1000m total ascent.

Pre-Quest mini-quest: completed

You rode your velocipede to the high pass of Fuenfria and drank from the rejuvenating waters of the legendary spring. Your guide, a specialised mountain scout, was impressed by the progress you have made. You returned via the Lion's Pass, for a total of 7 leagues (40km approx, and over 1000m climbed).

You are ready for your challenge.

Being fit enough to go mountain biking with this guy was already a goal of mine from way back. I found some of it hard going, especially the tricky descents, but in general it was great.

Oh yeah and... got my next race programmed. 10k, Dec 14 at early o'clock. Cold! It's hard to remember what being cold is even like in late September in Madrid.... winter is coming. Anyway, that's 13 weeks out and I want to go under 52 minutes. It's a work thing, and there is one person in the office who will definitely beat me, if she gets over her ankle injury. But I want to come second. There are teams, and then branches compete against each other so some good motivation. Tomorrow easy run, 8k-ish in an hour-ish, Wed bodyweight workout. If I have time I'll go and do it in the woods with inverted rows, chinups and deadhangs on my quest to do a pull up. Thursday HIIT. I'm going to do 30/30, 60/60, 90/90, 120/120 X3- which is to say 30 second sprint followed by 30 seconds jog/walk etc. Friday bodyweight, Saturday long run, Sunday cycling and walking (30k and 6k respectively).

Hello Lullaby and Blaidd, thanks for the support. I'll certainly be hitting the assassins up for tips on how to extend and intensify my bodyweight work.

I'm in one of those blissful post workout moments now, when the stresses of the world seem that bit less worrisome. Thanks, exercise generated endorphins!

I did

3x 60 stepups

15 pushups (plus one extra on set 2!)

    32 squats

12 bench dips (plus one extra in set 2!)

     26 lunges

     30 windmills

     70 second plank

and

30 jumping jacks to finish off

Now I'm eating my lunch. Vegetable stir fry, with two small onions, two large red bell peppers,  and one small green bell pepper from my garden fried up with garlic and home-made spicy sauce. I do like my veg. Except artichokes and brussel sprouts. I'll probably have some cold meat too just for the protein content (not for the deliciousness, nonono...)

Tomorrow is going to be my first dedicated HIIT session. I don't know how I is for Intense it's going to be, I want to feel my way into it. Not get injured.

Intervals today. I did 10 minutes walk/jog warm up then 30sec fast, 30 sec walk, 1min fast, 1min walk/jog, the 1:30 and 2min, and then did the same in reverse, 2min, 1:30, 1min, 30sec and a ten minute walk home. I ran the fast sections at an average of about 4:25/km which is 7:06 minutes/mile. My achiles doesn't seem to be suffering from it, though my back is hurting perhaps from the bodyweight stuff. Too much too soon? I also had to lift a load of boxes at work the other day. Anyway, tomorrow is a bodyweight day, so if my back is hurting I'll focus on lower body and core work.

Bodyweight today, in the godswood. Very busy today with dog walkers, speedwalkers and horseriders. Anyway, before I got there I did

3x 15 box jumps onto a knee high wall, interspersed with

16, 16, 15 pushups- broke down on the last one- box jumps are tiring!

Then long way round walk up the hill, past the House of the Angry Dogs, the Stone Cross and the Owl Tree (heretically called the Alien Tree by some),

 then

4x 5 inverted rows on hiphigh bar. They are strange, it doesn't feel very hard, but I can't manage many in a set.

3x2 chinups

40 second, 30 second, 30 second deadhangs. I feel like I'll never do a pullup. The thing is I don't really have a bar- what there are are rectangular beams, and the grip is difficult. I experimented with negative pullups on a rack type thing, like a wide ladder stuck in the ground. I wasn't very good at them, and you bang on the lower bars on the way down. I'm going to scout out playparks in a nearby housing estate on Sunday, see if there is anything more usable.

Onto the parallel bars for

3x12 leg raises, and

3x6 dips. Had to work round a pain in a bone in my right hand. I'm doing less leg raises than I was before, because I'm trying to focus on form- keeping legs straight and together, raising them as high as possible and not going too fast on the downward movement and ending up swinging.

Total walk about 5k.

Tomorrow is Long Slow Run day. It's only going to be 13-14k, as my goal now is a 10k on Dec 14. Then Sunday I'm going to cycle over to where my progeny are learning horsemanship, and take my Khaleesi out for an hour's walk/jog as she is getting started on her fitness epic (not another false dawn, I hope). Then cycle back. Probably about 30k total cycling, 6k walk/run.

Long slow run today was long, slow, and hard. Everything hurt, I think I was underfuelled, dehydrated and still tired from Thursday's intervals and Friday's boxjumps. I walked the last 3 of 13 km. Lots of uphill -over 200m in all. It happens, next time will be better.

SOooooo0, week one audit.

Quest 1: to do (variations on) the beginners' bodyweight workout 3-4 times a week. Done 3. It does seem to be affecting my back though. I probably need to focus on form with pressup, dips and so on. Still doubt I'll ever do a pull up, though I am mananging 2-3 chinups.

Quest 2: to do one HIIT session each week. Done. Felt great too.

Yep. No beer, bread, buns, or anything else bad from Sunday evening to Saturday morning. Not counting cheese or dark chocolate as bad here. Not in this universe.

But... my long run, which wasn't actually even very long, suffered on Saturday after bodyweight Wednesday, intervals Thursday and bodyweight Friday . I felt tired, and I feel tired today. I haven't been eating a carb-heavy diet for a while anyway, but I think my body is in a process of adaptation to training on esessentially no simple carbs. Also I'm actually 3 weeks into my own 'train every day in September' challenge and I suppose it's catching up with me.

Hello Leeroy. I think I read that you originally hail from the North East, as in the northeast of England? I spent my formative years in Fishburn. You won't have heard of it, noone has, but it's a former pit village in Co. Durham,near.. well not especially near anywhere. Kind of equidistant between Durham, Darlington, Middlesborough and Hartlepool. Anyway, in the spirit of the North East,

Alreet mucker?

Godswood training today. First off, 20 boxjumps on the original wall just to see how easy it felt- pretty easy, so I decided to do them on a higher bench, 3x10. But before that I did 3x10 pushups- less than last time, I hear you cry! Ah, but I did them on a reverse incline, with my feet on the first step of the base of the Stone Cross, which I estimate to be about 15cm. Then the aforementioned boxjumps, and onto the parallel bars for 3x13 leg raises alternating with 3x7 dips. HARD! Then to the monkey bars. I did chinups. I jumped into the first one of each set, and managed 3 more each time for 4 sets. Then I did a deadhang, overhand, for 2 35 second stretches, in the hope that one day I will do a pull up. If I keep saying it maybe it'll come true! To further that aim I finished with inverted rows, on the hip-high bar. I did 7, 7, 6 and 4, overhand. Then I tried to do some underhand and couldnt manage even one! What's that all about then?

Oh yeah and....

I did 3x15 rows each side, using a 10.6kg (weighed on my dodgy digital bathroom scale) bucket of water. Last time I weighed a very similar quantity of water it gave a reading of 12.5kg, so something is obviously wrong there. I should buy some dumbbells.
