I've been rotten...... Backstory = I have a couple of autoimmune diseases and other stuff going on. Part of this is coeliac disease, and subsequent food problems. This year I haven't been as well as I can be. Yet I’m pretty paranoid re gluten, avoid it like crazy and don’t eat anything with much risk of cross-contamination. Last month I had two wipeout weeks in the one month = ROTTEN! So, goal number 1 = nail this health malarkey – most of which I won’t log in detail on-line, as I’ld pass out writing it, let alone anyone reading it.i) food and wellbeing diary - write down everything I consume and keep notes of how well or not I am. I'm hoping I'll start seeing correlations.ii) Hygiene. A sub goal two parter.Handwash like I'm in the lab - it’s not that I'm filthy! But, I'm most likely to have a horizontal day on a Monday, which suggests I do something in the weekends that I shouldn't, but I eat mostly the same, so maybe labworker handwashing on weekdays is keeping my digestion happier.Kitchen cleaning – keep it clean, keep it clear, dishes every day. Again, I promise, I’m not as grubby as this sounds!iii) take good care of me - rest when I need it, do anything that helps me get healthier, change GP (my lovely helpful gp has just retired, her replacement did the “maybe you’re just tired†routine that I’d had for 30 years pre-coeliac diagnosis – trust me, autoimmune fatigue is not the same as just tired, and maybe, just maybe, I might recognise the difference!!!!!), eat gf, eat loads of veges and good protein, try a gentle dairy reintroduction once my gut is settled back down (>8 weeks dairy free and I'ld like to know if I can eat it at all). My other goals are dependent on being well enough.....Food enjoyment = cook one new recipe every weekPlay that bass = double bass practise every day, logged with a sticker reward chart. Get back to fitnessMy when I’m good schedule is:Kickboxing (I’m a 2nd Dan) 1 x a weekjujitsu (currently Green belt) 2x a weekyoga 2x a weekparkrun 5k on Saturday morninggym 3 mornings a week (recently treadmill running and NFA-BWB level 4 circuit)I’m almost willing to admit that this is too optimistic and maybe the shortage of rest days isn’t helping me stay healthy, I’m most willing to decrease the gym sessions over anything else, except they’re the sessions that have improved my general fitness and I like the banter…….And my mid term goal is to do more at home martial arts session. Starting with practising Cheechoe’s hip workout cause I likes it. Vs - when I’m rotten – well, getting out of bed is hard.So, I’m going to gently reintroduce workouts – starting with walking (started today!) then yoga, then martial arts. I can't even begin to imagine how others feel who don't have as strong an immune system as I have feel. So do what you need to in order to stay healthy. Likewise, I'm in very good shape, and other than a couple of minor setbacks, have never really taken a break from being fit, so I can't really offer any insight into how it feels to start back after not working out for a lengthy period. What I can offer you are some words of encouragement and the advice of listen to your body, cause it'll tell you what it needs for the most part. I am going to be so annoying. Oh yes to "listen to your body" - i think mine needs an interpreter........ I'm eager to see if there's any result on the handwashing experiment! that's interesting. Think i'll need moisturising handwash....... Good luck with your food logging - i'm already noticing that i'd gotten a bit lazy - with a bit of misalignment between what I thought I was eating vs reality (not re gluten or diary free, but in terms of balancing meals and sneaking in more processed food) Have you checked out your personal products for gluten as well? Following, of course!Oh yes - mind you, the last time i got this wrong my skin told me very very fast that i'd gone wrong - hmmm, rash = oats in soap. Why oh why put oats in soap and wheat in moisturiser? Luckily the uk is pretty good with gluten free medication. Today was good - feeling healthier, needed fewer rests, got stuff done. Also bought a mountain of good food - and harvested more of the garden = fresh chard and courgettes and lots and lots of raspberries straight from the garden. Yum. Hygiene improvements are go. I'm also currently already off dairy and mostly off nightshades (probably one meal including potato or tomato a month) and one of my flareups was within 24 hours of eating tinned tomatoes for the first time in a year..... hmmmmmm, with N=1 I can't call it a correlation, but I have chucked out the frozen portion of that meal and the other tin of tomato........ I've ordered "It starts with food" and "nom nom paleo" for more info and ideas - yep, I'm contemplating yet more diet changes. It's tough when you have to be constantly vigilant for allergens in disguise. Good luck!I'm getting better at taking my own food to other people's houses....... Plus covering my cup of coffee when talking with a spitter eating biscuits........ Though next time I think I'll just be blunt - am planning a "thank's mate, now I can't drink my coffee". Do find it very difficult in early days of dating (am single again....), do not yet have a flitatious way of saying (ok, also just struggle with flirtatious in general) "I'ld like to kiss you, but you've been drinking beer, and that will make me vomit in 4 hours time". Not a good way of getting a second date. Meantime, today was good. I'm going to work on it too. You've got a really good challenge up, best of luck!I'm sure it'll be easier to tackle those rotten days; this place is the bomb for encouragement. Oh, and the double base is one awesome instrument. Lou_be_Lou Posted September 16, 2014 Author Report Share Posted September 16, 2014 Day two of challenge is started - food packed, did a handstand for fun this morning, got a cat to take their bird outside, and am mostly prepared for giving a lecture tonight (even practised my impersonation of a carbon with tetrahedral bond angles).Day 1 was a win - I was healthy!!!!Discovered a problem with food logging - had just almost finished lunch, went to log what i'd eaten....... hmmmmm, rice, chicken, runner beans, courgettes, and what was the third vegetable????? Evidence that I have the short term memory of a grasshopper. Worked around it - this was left over dinner from sunday, looked it up, ah ha, carrot. Looks like i could hide my own easter eggs! So, food logged, walked a fair bit during the day, including bass carrying for multiple flights of stairs (weighted stairclimb), almost survived a rehearsal of mahler's 5th symphony. What do you play? I play guitar mainly, but I started out playing violin. I haven't touched my violin in years, so nowadays it's mostly guitar. I've had some experience with base, but nothing too big.In regards to jazz, my first introduction to Jazz guitar came from Django Reinhardt. I was playing some of his stuff in the school music rooms and the music director recommended me to the jazz band. One of my favorite memories is playing Reinhardt's "Belleville" in the school music show with the double-bass guy, the sax guy and the back-up guitarist.Aw, that was almost four years back! I have no idea what happened to those guys, quite a shame we lost contact. So, you're an accomplished martial artist, a scientist and a musician?! Can there be a more awesome person?!!Well, I want to be you when I grow up. All too much in one plane. Its me post lecture, so you're missing the excitable jumping around before and after my tetrahedral moment - but I did make the class recite the central dogma of molecular biology many times "DNA makes RNA makes PROTEIN" - had about a 50% strike rate of happy students.
