WCG's Rehab as Oracle

Not much of a catchy title I'm afraid...

Epic Quest: I want to be Batgirl. I want to be in great shape when I hit 40 or at least well on the way there. When this challenge starts I will have exactly 53 weeks in hand.

I saw Guardians of the Galaxy the other day and looked into what Chris Pratt had to say about his transformation... Eat right, train, be consistent and set a deadline. But he also said time looks a long way ahead but when you look back, it flys... Time will fly, use it for something good.

Unfortunately, I am rather restricted at the moment. Whilst I am getting better at being left handed, I am still in a splint for another week or so minimum. My broken radius has healed and the badly sprained wrist capsule is improving with exercise to get the scar tissue moving again... My thumb, however, doesn't seem to have got with the program and is still very grumpy about the whole thing. If it doesn't settle in the next week or so, I may have to see a specialist or get a cortisone jab.

I not in pain except during exercises (or over reaching ability in movement) and have realised that not only was the pain during exercise limiting but the pain of changing my clothes! A major barrier has been that after work clothes I haven't wanted to do more than change into pjs as pulling up clothes and struggling through tops was a major pain. Now I am pain free changing into casuals or workout clothes and can tie up shoelaces without swearing! Mentally I'm on the up too but I will need to keep working on that before I can reduce the happy pills.

All that said, this challenge may mutate throughout the six weeks but I'll be going back to basics.

Training: walk every day. Am hoping I will be capable of more by the end of this challenge but walking helps get my heart rate up and keeps my head clearer. Maybe I can get back to TKD training and the gym soon if I am careful and mostly train legs... We'll see.

Recovery: do whatever the hand therapist tells me to do. At the moment it is a set of 6 exercises done in sets of 10, three times a day.

Nutrition: I have discovered a strange phenomenon... I know I need to go easy and take care of myself, but this should not mean that I eat stuff that makes me physically feel bad! It may have been my brain searching for the serotonin that comes with carbs, especially sugar, or looking for emotional comfort but whatever reason, I have put on fat and my digestive system is grumpy. I need to ween myself of this crap. First week or two will be minimising gluten. Then added sugars, then reducing random carbs, then I might try tracking again...

Side Quests:
Fight skills - despite not being able to form a fist or rotate my forearm, I can practice my form work. It isn't a priority but I think it would make me feel good.
Improving the Batcave - Steve mentioned this in the last blog post I read... 5 minutes a day improving the environment I live in. I have the ability now to do better and catch up on the backlog crap that is lying around.

I have been going backwards... Time to change that. Batgirl got shot in the spine and not only kept up her fight skills but used her information skills to help others take down the bad guys in a new persona as Oracle. Right now, I have to be Oracle and keep moving forward despite my current disability.

This is a great challenge!  The start of a new challenge is a great time to regroup and line up all the things that need to be dealt with.

I think I'm with you on the Batcave side quest.  I feel the need for some organization in small doses.  How are you planning to do that, have a list of five-minute tasks and pick one each day, or something else?

I felt like I could run forever, like I could smell the wind and feel the grass under my feet, and just run forever.

Oracle is a badass.  Total, complete badass.

The challenge looks awesome.  I saw the Chris Pratt video about his transformation, and it instantly sky rocketed him to "Most awesome dude ever" status.  Really hoped Steve would have picked up on it and make a post about it.

Anyway, good luck!

Two and half days in...

Am on holidays for two weeks from next week and struggling to get over the line with work. Am healthy (excepting injury), which is nice, but motivation and concentration are really lacking.

Monday I walked heaps then it was rainy and cold and very hard to get myself walking on Tuesday. I did it though and have clothing change (and raincoat) for after work today to fit in a stroll before hand therapy appointment.

All hand rehab exercises done so far... getting good movement in a lot of directions but the thumb is still very painful :(

Nutrition... Monday succumbed to the good food with good company policy and i shared a nutella pizza with my friend after a lovely Greek salad with lamb. The second glass of wine may have had something to do with the decision, but it had been ages since we'd caught up. So there was a little gluten but not much. Tuesday the only gluten was in some Milo - a chocolate, malt, fortified drink. I am still looking for sweet things and have had chocolate yesterday and today. Guts are settling with decrease in gluten, so resetting taste buds (and sugar highwill have to be next.

SQ: Batcave - This has been good because I just tell myself go on, just five minutes and you can cross it off. ...and guess what, I get something done and feel better. Soaked dishes and collected them on Monday, emptied and put the dishwasher on on Tuesday. Yay me!

Fight skills... not yet.

Good start. Glad to be back in the game! :D

Oh Kay... Where am I at?

Hit a bit of a bump in the road on Wednesday... Went for a 20min walk between work and hand therapy session, then got persuaded to go to dinner at pub with friends (added 10+ mins walk to pub from train station). Great socially, ok meal - mixed grill with steak cut up for me (so nice to have texture of solid meat) chips and salad, and only 1.6 std drinks in a yummy beer. No batcave activity, came home went straight to bed.

Thursday was a big celebration day at my work (a catholic girls secondary school). Good breakfast, only 2 lots of wrist exercises done as it was a very busy and tiring day, ate all the doughnuts and sugar and felt a bit rough in the guts after (quell surprise!), got my exercise done with plenty of time on my feet and an energetic dance at the disco! It's amazing to me how girls go off not he dance floor when there are no boys to impress. Batcave... Kind of... Night before I accidentally turned the pilot light off on the preferred heater in the house. Spent 30mins pulling it apart and trying to get it going again... It's about 35 years old and the gas jet for the pilot light is a little worn and doesn't seem to hit the thermostat spike in the right spot to convince it to stay on... Maybe.

Friday... Tired, grumpy ready for holidays. Walk - not much, Wrist - only two I think, Batcave - nope, gluten at morning tea which was delicious, and some at lunch and at after work drinks - I suppose it shows all the possibilities I haven't been taking this week... Yay for me! :-/

Start again Saturday... So far so good!

2 days til Project 365 begins! I'd hoped my wrist would be much more betterer by then but have the splint on for longer now :( but I will just have to work around it!

Hello!

Umm... Have been on holiday from work for the last two weeks. I haven't actually been anywhere, I slept in lots and had lots of appointments for both myself and my grandmother (my uncle went home for the two weeks - so it wasn't much of a break). I caught up with a number of friends and got out and enjoyed the sun. I ate, drank and was merry whilst beginning to minimise gluten for a happier gut.

I started Project365 on my birthday with a very depressing set of measurements. Time for change! I did basic measurements today and in two weeks (including shark week) I haven't even lost a kilo! However, when I put it in your ye olde worlde weights and measures I have lost 1.43 pounds. I like the sound of that much better! It's a start.

I have been writing about what I've been doing daily but in Evernote so it needs making into a battle log and I need to do a catch up for the last weeks...

Week three plan? Ummm... Better food intake, workout how to get exercise I am capable of doing into my work week, sleep, keep up with Batcave and do all the exercises for my wrist.

Time for change!

This is the best part of your update.  Sad that you haven't been around in your Oracle-Batgirly awesomeness, but the fact you've managed to plan things out while not here is awesome!  You got all of this, you got plans, and you'll do great!

Hmmm... except that it is week 4 already right?

So I have made a battle log for Project 365. The second post covers my last two weeks or so that I have been thinking about but not internetting with you guys :( I think posting here helps me to reflect on things more clearly... as well as get valuable advice and support.

So over the pain today. Feel overwhelmed by life. Work has lots of competing things that need to be done and I can't get my head together to do them and then my class is behind because they don't get algebra in all it's abstract glory and I have to hurry them up because we are behind as a class. So I feel frustrated that I can't teach them as they need to be taught. Angry and frustrated with the education sausage factory. Have a really big Can't mood happening. Have PT next which I am dearly hoping will help. I do ok with the eating then can't restrain the miseries and go for sugar. Which starts a cycle of feeling bad physically and that I can't follow through. Don't know what to do about it and feel like I'm up and down all the time at the moment. Haven't done wrist rehab in last 2 days which is really unlike me. Been in pain catching my thumb on things. Almost tempted to go to dr and ask for a couple of days off but I don't know if that would make things better or worse. Parents back soon and really just want my mum to look after me for a bit... What a sook!

:/

Sorry you're having a crap shoot. I know them lows feels.

Take a deep breath. You know what's going on and what's causing your issues, and that's infinitely better than some Nebulous Bad Feels. You clearly can tackle these things, especially if you break them up to do them one at a time. Do your rehab, get physically better. Take a breath. Try to refocus on what your students are missing, rather than the whole of algebra. Take a breath. Eat a small amount of sugar - then toss the rest. Take a breath.

You have this. You can handle it. You can't be beaten down.

Thanks guys. Your support does make a difference when my mood is up and down. Have pulled this week out of the bin and dusted it off to finish it well.

Did a 5km parkrun this morning. By strapping my knee and actually jogging a little (mostly downhill) I. Improved from my first try 2 weeks ago by 5 minutes. This PB thing could be addictive!

But here's how my thinking changed yesterday (and after I typed it I went and walked the long way to the library and did over 7km)...

340

Don't ask about the 3 cinnamon donuts... But they were good. Slight reflux after adding cheese and crackers to that mix and a bastard of a headache with the glass of wine. Woke up with a headache and sinus pain but it is way worse now.

Wrist can mark math tests for about 30mins at a stretch before needing a rest. Hard to get a run going.

Had a thought about the way I am approaching things at them moment partly inspired by JoeDog on NF and a reply to an FB post about going back to yoga that resonated... He said: Nice one! One step closer than you were this morning ...

I have been bothered about putting on weight, but really that isn't the biggest thing that is important to me. Being healthy is. I have to get the focus out of my head on being guilty about food and work on making myself happy with a healthier body which will make my food choices better as a consequence. I have been trying to start rehabbing in the wrong spot which is why it isn't working and it is making me more unhappy with myself. Reverse it and get outside, get moving however I can, if I can't go back to the old routine, make a new one... Get a healthy body and mind first. That is what is important.

I know I haven't been very present this challenge but thanks for being here for me whilst I try to get it back together!

Honestly? Weight is a fluctuation. It's a thing that you carry somewhat and then don't carry anymore.

It's way better to live in a body that has little pain, that responds when you need it to and does what you want it to, regardless of what it looks like.

So take your time and get healthy. It's a good call.
