Aw, poor kitty!  It's hard when our fuzzlebums go missing on us.

I'll send good vibes and prayers your way!

And the one with the before pictures, that IS brave.  I'm super terrified of the very idea, and that's one I can't conquer just yet.

A year from now, you may wish you had started today.

I can't believe I almost forgot to check the minis this challenge. The brave thing I'm doing this challenge started when Steve wrote an article about getting out of your comfort zone and do something that makes you uncomfortable. Do Something You Suck At. It just so happens that the thing this article inspired me to do lines up with this mini. So what did I decide to do? I decided to become a certified scuba diver. I've been wanting to do this for a long time but what was stopping me? Was it a fear of drowning? Nope. I was afraid of being judged by people for my weight. Can you believe that, I'm more scared of judgement than mortal peril.

But there is a second part to being brave that I'm doing with this. I finally decided that I was going to do this class, but I was petrified to do it by myself. So scared that I asked my 12 year old niece and a person that doesn't even know how to swim (didn't know that at the time when I asked) if they could take the class with me. I couldn't find anyone but knew I had to press on or regret my decision to not go.

I've now gone to two classes by myself and I'm loving it. There has been no judgement by other classmates. We all want the same thing and the energy has been electric. And for one last brave thing to do, I'll leave you with a picture of me at my class. I'm extremely nervous to let people see me so big, but this is the Nerd Fitness community and you guys have really helped me level up my life.

Wow, this place seems to be full of brave people! This mini is definitely inspiring :)

I have been thinking for many days what would be the brave thing to do this week. I'm currently doing my exchange studies in Amsterdam, and I haven't really learned to speak dutch yet. Although most people speak perfectly good english, the language barrier does at times feel a bit difficult. In today's class I was brave enough to stand up for myself in two situations. We're doing some group exercises and my group had to ask some things from the teacher. The class is in english, but as everyone else in the group is dutch, the teacher was answering the questions in dutch. I asked them to switch to english, so that I could understand, too.

The other brave thing in the class happened when we were dividing the assignments for the next week. I also stood up for myself, saying that my schedule is too busy to take much responsibility for the next assignments. The old me would just have accepted all the assignments and responsibility and then crushed under the pressure. Nowadays, I'm learning to keep my stress levels lower. It was still scary, though! I was really afraid that the others will think that I'm lazy or avoiding the work. Still, I'm happy I did it: now I have a lot less stress for the next week.

Wow! That feeling of loving the class must be so amazing after having been afraid to go there!

Okay - no being brave for me this week. :( Just returned from my osteo appointment, and that means no exercise for the next three days. Which would leave me with only 3 days to get in some practice before the test... Ummm, nope.

I hope they will offer these tests on a regular basis in the future, though, so I can still be brave the next time. :)

It's very encouraging to read about all your wins this week, though! Makes me think if you guys can all beat THOSE kind of challenges, then I can hopefully get over my WAAAAAH! TEST! HELP! anxiety. :encouragement:

Well, you decided to go slay the dragon, but bandits stole your sword on the way there.  Now you have to make a new sword and kill the dragon later.

We'll give you the time to catch up.

Got it. My brave thing. I am still uncomfortable playing piano in front of people. I go in and out of nursing homes as part of my job and most of them have pianos. From now on, when I see a piano, I will ask if I can play for a little while (this assumes things are not horribly busy workwise). There are always people around who may or may not be listening.

Challenge 1: Done, although not exactly as described. And I will continue to do this.

I couldn't think of anything brave to do!  So I spent a couple of days paying attention, waiting for something to make me feel like "I can't" or "ugh, I don't know."  And I found my thing!  It's kind of silly, but I've always been afraid to go to yoga two days in a row.  Because what if my legs are tired from the day before and I can't hold warrior and I'm all wobbly and I have to go into child's pose AND THE WORLD ENDS?  So that is my thing.  I went to yoga this morning, and I will go to yoga tomorrow morning.  And if I am wobbly and fall over, nothing bad will happen.  And I will be ever so slightly braver than I was before.

I have a date with someone I met online tonight. It's not the first time that I've done this, but there are a lot of crazies in Los Angeles. I'll give myself the point for showing up if she flakes. If she shows, I'll give myself the point for staying the whole meal, even if she's a succubus (thought we'll probably skip dessert and after dinner drinks).

I just read through everyone's BRAVE. I have to say I am so happy for you all. Being brave is.... well... a very brave thing to do  :pirate:

I have myself become so much braver since I started hanging out here. First of all, I am no longer afraid to try something that seems difficult. I figure if I fail then I will have a new challenge. In the past I would have just skipped it. I still need to use the Beast Mode technique but that is what being brave is right?!!

Right now I am struggling with a difficult bike ride that I want to take. I have done it once but this time I want to ride it with a friend. I am afraid I won't be able to keep up with her. I am going to email her and make the plan.  :pirate:

Haven't done it yet!  I walked around the house in my underwear with my camera trying to talk myself into doing it last night, and just didn't.  I didn't know how hard it would actually be!  I WILL CONQUER THIS TONIGHT! RAHHRRRR

My cat still hasn't come back.  I realized that my brave was stupid, since I'm not sure how far her territory goes.  Basically if she did wander into someone's garage, I could disturb 100 people who couldn't have caused the accident.

Maybe I could do a new brave by going back to that one neighbor next time I'm lonely, have a board-game in my bag.

You'll really want to do this. I've lost 80 pounds but didn't start taking pictures until after I lost about 50 pounds. I would be much happier comparing my now photos with what I looked like 80 pounds ago as opposed to what I looked like 30 pounds ago. I don't quite get the same level of satisfaction with my accomplishment. Plus you don't need to show them to anyone ever if you don't want to.

Guys, I did my brave thing (going to yoga 2 days in a row) and it was NO BIG DEAL.  Seriously though, I was still halfway talking myself out of it on the walk over there this morning.  My legs were wobbly at the beginning, but then they realized they weren't getting out of this so they might as well keep going.  I bailed out of one long plank but otherwise did fine.  Why was I so convinced I couldn't do this???

Yay for the mini!

Well, I went to the dance last night and...

it was awesome! I really loved it and I am so glad that I went. One of the guys there told the me the name of a movie that I have been trying to remember for about three years that I saw ten years ago. :)

It was cowboy themed and everyone there was about the same dance level that I was. We all learned the dances together. It was so hot we left the door open all night and barely felt it unless we stood in the doorway. I really truly enjoyed myself.

So I went to the local Military Museum's fundraiser dance last night with my seven year old.  My son and I got to learn the foxtrot.  Our variation was a little more... exciting... than the other dancers.  Our turning was much tighter, so we stayed near the middle of the floor and went around and around... and around...  Then we got to wander around and see all the WWI and WWII paraphernalia.  They even had a big set up about D-Day and a guy dressed in the old uniform and gear standing by to answer questions.

On top of that, my son and I actually won the 40s costume contest!  I'd like to think the victory rolls I did had something to do with it, but I'm pretty sure it was all the cute seven year old in a fedora and suspenders...  We earned a ride on an actual Higgins Boat (think D-Day landing craft) which the museum owns and rides on the water near by!

So my brave this week was actually trying to do my hair (which I neeeever do) and it worked out wonderfully!

Did my brave thing Friday at the gym - I made my over to the free-weight area.  It seems weird - I practice Kung Fu outdoors in populated parks and city areas and don't give a care to all the onlookers but if I am in a gym where one might expect people would be using weights, I freak myself out of going to the free-weight section.  Well not on Friday!

A few weeks ago I tried a hike and failed miserably.  It's basically a few miles straight up the side of a mountain, very rocky, requires a little rock climbing, people are rescued via helicopter from it all the time, etc etc. I got maybe a third of the way up before having to turn around- a combination of starting too late in the day so it was too hot for me (really heat sensitive), wrong shoes for the terrain, and just didn't feel well (randomly threw up very early on in the hike).  I'm really fearful of trying again- I think it'll suck as bad as last time, I'll suck as bad as last time, or get further but then be stuck somewhere when I reach the point that I can't go any further.  I didn't really get into the rock climbing parts, pretty sure I won't be able to do that part, I'll get freaked out about the height, I'm not strong enough to hold on, I'll fall, I'll get stuck, I'll be on the evening news, okay I'm talking myself out of this again....

Anyway.  I'm going to try it again this Friday.  Wish me luck!

Did and done! It was incredibly hard, I hyperventilated a little, I cried a little, I took a ridiculously long time to do it, but I did it.  I was starting to bargain with myself- "Going further than last time, that's still brave right? It counts,"- when another hiker came along and, probably sensing my waning fortitude, cheerily assured me, "You're almost there!"  This got my spirit back up and I was determined to finish.  In retrospect, that guy was a fucking liar, I was nowhere near done at that point, but he kept me going long enough that by the time I realized this, I could actually see the summit.

On Saturday I also ran my first 5k/obstacle course, which is something else I've been too scared to do, seeing as I can't actually run 5k and was pretty positive I'd be able to do very few of the obstacles.  Ironically, had I been sitting home on Friday doing nothing when my friend called needing a partner, I'd have probably said no for the aforementioned reasons, but since I was clinging to the side of a mountain, already doing things outside of my comfort zone, it felt a lot easier to say yes.  I'd very much like to be the kind of person that says they hiked a mountain and then ran a 5k on their weekend, so I figured I should actually do those things given the opportunity.  And I actually managed to do all the obstacles (not well, necessarily) and walk less than I thought (though more than I liked- new goals!).  It wasn't too bad, it was probably a good cool down to keep my calves from completely seizing on me from the previous day.  The foam roller daunts me.

Anyway, sorry for the long post.  I'm just excited.
