rita lin Posted November 7, 2014 Report Share Posted November 7, 2014 This is my first challenge with the warriors, I usually join in with the rangers but as this challenge is focusing entirely on strength training it seemed apt to have a bit of a switch! I'm not a newbie when it comes to weight training, but this is the first time I'm taking it seriously as an element of fitness. My partner is currently doing an Olympic lifting class and I'm joining him in the gym with him as my 'coach' as it were.Goal; Lose some inches!Starting measurements; waist = 27inchesBum = 41inchesThighs = 22inchesBust = 34inchQuests:1. Lift twice a week - focusing on bench press, squats and walking lunges, plus complexes and extras2. Do not buy biscuits - snack on healthy things, continue having protein shake as mid morning snack & avoid take away more than once every 2 weeks3. Walk to the beach twice a week with Rob - its one of the reasons we moved here, so why not! Ideally I'll post after every workout to keep a good record of my progress. I often feel silly in the weight room, lifting not a lot of weight but everyone starts somewhere I suppose! rita lin Posted November 9, 2014 Author Report Share Posted November 9, 2014 During the break between challenges, I've been working on my strength training and have managed to increase my front squat from a bare 15kg bar to the bar plus 10kg (yay!) and today I really noticed the difference in my strength. I totally managed to do my 25 laps in 5 minutes....TWICE!! As me and my team skated a marathon in an hour to raise money for Children in Need I thought I was going slow, and not moving my legs enough, but the strength behind me was enough to push me through those laps. So happy!! rita lin Posted November 11, 2014 Author Report Share Posted November 11, 2014 First workout of the challenge!!I've decided to focus on 4 main lifts; bench press, deadlift, squats (both front and back) and pull ups.Today's efforts all on 20kg bars - Bench press: 5 x bare bar3 sets of 5 x 10kg 1 set of 5 x 15kg2 sets of 5 x 5kgI worked up to 35kg total then worked down. Rob had me allmost in tears at the end xDDeadlift: 2 sets of 5 x bare bar2 sets of 8 x 10kg2 sets of 5 x 20kg1 set of 5 x 30kgI then did some assisted pull ups, set at 40kg so I was apparently pulling about 35kg bodyweight, for 10 then set it at 35kg for 5.I'm shattered now and my hands hurt xD but it was excellent. I did go to roller derby training on Wednesday night, which was excellent!My goal is a good one because even the small increase in my strength I've noticed over the last few weeks is greatly improving my derby game. I'm much better at blocking and not being pushed off track than previous yay! Didn't manage to walk into town this week. It was my first week back at work after my holiday so I was mostly shattered every night. rita lin Posted November 18, 2014 Author Report Share Posted November 18, 2014 Bit of a setback health wish this week. I fainted at home on Sunday evening, and have felt pretty crap since. I've had to take 3 days off work because I'm not allowed to drive, and have had an ECG and blood test done. I've been tested for a stroke and heart attack, which thankfully have not happened. I reckon I'm anaemic, but we'll see. This of course means I'm not getting myself either skating or to the gym this week - I'm struggling to walk in a straight line right now, I very much doubt I could skate xD. And I've still lost weight...because I'm stressed out. I've dealt with stress before, I've had stomach ulcers and more stress headaches than I can count. But it's never made me feel truly sick. However, I'm now back on the wagon! My hands hurt, my feet hurt, my legs, my back, my chest, my arms. I woke up in the night and I was so dehydrated I felt drunk xD. But I felt so much stronger. There was more strength behind my hits and I felt so much more stable. My legs are finally strengthening up and are able to carry me right through a practice without being shattered. Excellent! And kudos for getting right back on track afterwards (and hitting PRs!). It sounds like the strength training is really paying off for you in roller derby, which is great!
