The Deflabulation of Schmopey

Schmopey

Recommended Posts

I joined Nerd Fitness in February of 2013 after having decided that I needed to get into a shape other than very round. Last year was pretty great from a fitness point of view: by mid October I was down to 206Lbs from the 276 the scale was reading in January. I then decided I wanted to get stronger and began eating more. I managed a combined total of 820Lbs for the Salubrious Spring Strength Skirmish, which isn't too bad for a guy nearing 40 who had only been lifting for about 15 months and had a hernia repaired 3 months before the competition.

Unfortunately, this year has not been so great at least not the past 5-6 months. My weight got up to near 260, and I had stopped going to the gym.

It's time to get back on track. Let's get started with this deflabulation!

The Plan:

Get back in the gym: I've been doing SL 5x5, so I'll get back to that.

Watch what goes in the pie hole: I'll get back in the habit of tracking consumption on MFP (link in my sig).

Get the dog some exercise, too: take the dog for at least 2 runs a week of at least 2 miles each.

Become a rock star: I am finally learning how to play a guitar I've owned for 20 years; need to practice at least 30 minutes at least 5 days a week.

This challenge is predominately about getting back into good habits, so success will be determined by how consistent I am.

I should get back to work.

First day back in the gym after several months off. The weight is down a bit from recent highs. Not happy with how high the body fat has gotten. I guess that's why I need to deflabulate!

Practiced guitar for 30 minutes.

Gotta love the first few days if a cut; down 2.9 pounds since Monday!

Monday evening, I had my wife take a look at my back, as I had noticed a very tender spot and wanted to be sure I wasn't developing a boil. This morning I realized that it was barbell induced. I guess that's what happens when you let the back flab get soft then hit it with 160lb squats.

Music lessons are tonight, so I squeezed 20 minutes of practice in this morning.

Dogs can be good for that.   What type of dog?  We have a person in our community who has 2 greyhounds.  He runs with them.  They look bored.

Warriors don't count reps and sets. They count tons.

Here's a video I took of her last fall:

She's a mutt that was rescued from West Virginia. She now weighs about 55 pounds. The DNA test we had done says she's got rottweiler, boxer, and setter in her genes along with other indeterminate varieties. She is definitely not taxed by my pace.

Great job on the challenge so far, Schmopey! You'll be back to your old numbers before you know it.

Not gonna lie though... I'm mostly here for the cute dog videos!!! :)

Monday, Week 2:

Wt: 252.4, BF: 31.1, ICW: 80.0, ECW: 47.4, TBW: 127.4

Squats: BWX10, 45x5, 95x5, 135x5, 170 5x5

OHP: 45x5, 65x5, 85x5, 105x3, 110 5x5

DL: 135x5, 185x5, 235x5

Weight was up which came as no surprise after the over-indulgence of Saturday. I also expect most of it is water weight and will drop by Wednesday. I have not been having DOMS, so I guess my body is back on the program.

Speaking of back on the program, I accidentally turned on my late alarm (set for 6:30) when I went to bed last night. I happened to awaken in the early morning and checked the clock expecting to see 2 something, because I thought the alarm was set for 4:30. The clock read 4:34. I guess a week was enough to turn my internal clock back on.

Wednesday, Week 2:

Wt: 248.0, BF: 32.2, ICW: 77.8, ECW: 45.2, TBW: 123.0

Squats: BWX10, 45x5, 95x5, 135x5, 175 5x5, 135x15, 175 felt lighter than either 165 or 170

BB Row: 105 (5,5,5,5,5,10)

Bench: 45x5, 95x5, 145x5, 155 5x5, clipped the safeties on the third rep of the third set; when I was able to recover and get the last two reps, I knew I could get the last two sets. 80 pushups yesterday probably weren't the best idea.

Did the extra sets of 15 squats and 10 rows 'cause the world won't save itself. No extra bench, since I hope to crank out some pushups (that may be sheer folly).

Weight was down a good bit from Monday as expected, but the silly $10,000 dollar scale has my body fat consistently going up.

Friday, Week 2:

I took the day off work to do some house cleaning an shopping in preparation for Thanksgiving, so I hit the gym at 2PM instead of 5AM.

Wt: 248.9, BF: 29.7, ICW: 80.9, ECW: 47.2, TBW: 128.1

Squats: BWX10, 45x5, 95x5, 135x5, 180 5x5 These felt pretty easy

OHP: 65x5, 85x5, 105x5, 115 5x5 skipped the empty bar 'cause that don't help save the world!

DL : 145x5, 185x5, 225x5, 245x5 these felt good

Volume circuit: 2 +10 squats
Squats: 135x10
Bench: 115x10
DL: 185x10
BBRow: 115x10

During last year's volume challenge, I used similar volume circuits several times to up the weight lifted. I think I managed at 3 workouts that totaled over 100,000 pounds. Of course last year, I had been lifting consistently for almost a year. This time around, after sitting on my butt for 4 months or so, I was only able to get through 2 circuits, though I did do an extra 10 squats at the end.

Saturday, Week 2:

Wasn't as sore as I had feared I'd be. My hammies are a bit tight, as are the ad- and abductors when I get near the end ROM of squatting.

Decided to do some active recovery and went running with the pooch, ~3.4mi. in ~43 minutes. Not 100% certain because I realized at my normal 5 minute mark that RunKeeper wasn't tracking. I accidentally double tapped at the beginning which paused it, so only 3.00mi in 37:59 was tracked.

Will go practice guitar now: 3/5
