Tin Man Just Shows Up

The Tin Man

Recommended Posts

Hi Druids! Never had a challenge in here before, I am usually Ranging or Warrioring or Scouting. Given the main goal of my challenge (take care of myself/stretch) the Druids seemed like the place to be. Also I hear you are some pretty awesome people. Well I am super late so I might as well get to it!

The name of my challenge comes from another pretty amazing group of people: November Project. If you are unfamiliar with them, you should become familiar. They are taking over the world.

Intro video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a_3REVDgFT4

5 minute video talking about them a bit more here: http://nesn.com/2014/11/november-project-in-boston-offers-chance-to-meet-new-people-get-fit-video/

They are amazing. Summary: crazy people get together at 6:30 AM on Mon/Wed/Fri and work out.

To the main theme, taking care of myself. I messed up my IT band two years ago when I did a half marathon and never quite did everything needed to get back to 100%. I got most of the way but I recently tweaked things again when I went for a 4 mile run. When going to NP I will start slow and work my way back up, erring on the side of not doing enough. The "Just Show Up" part is both a saying of theirs (usually in hashtag form) and part of my goal. If I show up and put in work I will gradually get better.

Stretch/Foam Roll:

3/4/5/6/7/7 times per week.

Start with 3 per week then add. Building the habit. Just 10 minutes.

Physical Therapy Exercises:

3 times per week

I have the exercises I was doing that were prescribed. Gonna do them again.

November Project:

Just show up, 9 times total.

Welcome, I'm a new Druid for this challenge too!

Wow, the November project looks awesome. There isn't one in my city (St. Louis) and even if there was the timing doesn't work with my schedule, but you have my envy for being able to participate in this - what an awesome movement. Just be careful not to push yourself into further injury!

I'm sure it's hard to take a breather for recovery - wishing you the best with this challenge!

There is a road, no simple highway,
Between the dawn and the dark of night,
And if you go no one may follow,
That path is for your steps alone.

Thanks! Their goal is to expand from 17 to 30 cities by the end of next year and 50 by end of 2016, so maybe St. Louis is on the way! And yes, a big part will be to remember not to push myself and do almost frustratingly small increments more.

Fuck yeah. We'll hit 10 billion cities by the end of 2017.

Since we both have goals to just show up, maybe we'll finally cross paths?

So to actually update my challenge - my first week was kind of a wash. I got one set each of PT and 10 minutes of mobilizing. Once I dropped the ball by starting late I should have adjusted the numbers for then. Oh well. A new week has begun! And I still have a couple straggling nerds at my home!

I mean, I figured I could harass you enough in person.

But internet yelling is so enjoyable.

WAIT SHUT UP YOU JOINED THE DRUIDS?!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!

YES I DID!!!!!!!!

This is not the place I would have expected to find you. Oh well. Found you.

Subbing! Now get mobile!

Yep! This challenge is about being kind to myself physically (and a non-challenge goal of being kinder to myself mentally and emotionally). The Druids seemed like the place to be. Plus Livingroovy is here and she's a cool cat.

ITBS sucks. I have had off and on problems with that for about two years now. If you are foam rolling, I recommend this article http://asmwellness.com/2013/09/23/dont-foam-roll-your-it-band/ It made a huge difference for me (but so painful!).

Oooh good stuff. My TFL, surprising nobody, is super tight. That's an awesome way to target it, thanks!

Phoenix...I'll take that link!

Tinney...can't do Nov pro until I can run. ..but it looks awesome!

November Project is fantastic! How are stairs? I rarely run the stairs, I am usually walking them after the first couple sections.

No problem. I was able to run a half marathon with no ITBS pain after just a few weeks of this technique plus the strengthening exercises I was doing. Hope it works out well for you, too.

So I went to November Project today for Risen Phoenix's birthday with the man of the hour, raptron, and a still-visiting Cheechoe. And of course Ska was there, because Ska is always there.

Look how happy RP is to be there!

I was also incredibly happy to JustShowUp. Workout was 40 sections, but I did my 12. I did 10 last time, and I think adding 2 each time will help build both my fitness and my confidence that I can run without my body falling apart. Also there was a "fire drill" where 5 times during the workout we had to hit the deck and do 10 push ups. And icing (and a way to stay warm when I stopped early) was doing 5 air squats for each of RP's 28 years.

Gonna mobilize before bed.

There's a lot to be said for just doing a little more than you did before. Just a little more, then a little more, then a little more. Soon, you find yourself doing so much more than you ever thought you could do, and it doesn't even feel like you've changed much of anything.

The journey is the destination.

Glad you and RP got to party it up. :D

Exactly the idea! Incremental improvements so I don't realize how awesome I am getting!

So I wasn't going to do much of a writeup of the big meetup because I didn't do the Spartan race, but after reading everybody else's recaps I just couldn't help myself.

Let's start with saying I am stupidly lucky. I have met a crazy amount of nerds. I even have the misfortune of living with one, RisenPhoenix. There are many in my area and I have been able to meet over 50 between meetups around here and ones I have been able to travel to. I say all this not to brag but to lend context to this statement: every single nerd I meet is awesome and I get along with to some degree. We may not all become best friends or even especially close, but it is someone else we know is in our corner. Case in point: CourtnieMarie. I met her when we went to Crossfit Newton to lift and hang out the Friday before the race. I saw someone I didn't know in an NF shirt and  was initially shy about introducing myself. After a little bit I went to hunt for a foam roller and she was using it. We started chatting and almost immediately we were chatting and having a grand ol' time. 24 hours later she was drinking vodka out of my blender cup. Nerds are like that. As others have said, Rebels are just family you haven't met yet. More of a case in point is that I can repeat this story with others I met this weekend. Silly that I still get shy approaching people even when I know this is the case, that is going to be a thing to work on.

High points:

-Seeing RP deadlift 405

-Being surprised by appearances by both Staci and Steve

-Meeting and hosting the incredibly friendly, polite, and thoughtful Kishi

-Being shoved out of the way by Gainsdalf because I was between him and cookie butter (that he proceeded to smear on people's faces)

-Gainsdalf bringing both amazing (and highly dangerous) apple pie moonshine and incredibly limited production Dogfish Head beer

-Slapping SevenFootGeek in his stupid face. Made better by Sandylion commenting "That was a good one!" Kudos to 7FG for being sporting enough not to break me.

-Chammy hugs. And all nerd hugs.

-How well my girlfriend fits in with the nerds

-Getting puppy kisses from Gabriel

-Seth's quads

Okay I need to stop this list or I will just keep writing. Don't be offended if you aren't mentioned, there is so much to remember!

Things I wish:

-That I got to spend more time with the contingent of nerds that stayed in Framingham.

-That AgentSka was there for the Spartan and partying afterwards. At least I know where to find him every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

-That I had met CourtnieMarie earlier!

-That I had more time with the visiting monks Kishi, SevenFootGeek, Dandelion, and QuothTheDragon. Especially Quothy because we barely had a chance to chat the whole weekend (partially because of my "shy to approach people even when I know they are awesome and friendly" mentioned above, did I say how I need to work on that?)

-That I had figured out a way to run the race with everyone

-I wish nightlight and emcee were there. At least I get to see nightlight TOMORROW!!1!!11!1
