Getting My Pre-Mommy Bod Back

I have had 2 children, both of them were 10+ pounds and I ended up with a herniated stomach muscle. I have used that as an excuse for my mid-section not being as toned as it used to be. My last child was born 5 years ago. The excuses ends now!

Exercise / Nutrition Goals:

1. Watch what I eat (actually making better food choices as well as quantities). How? By using a website that helps breakdown my calorie intake.

2. Exercise at least 3 times a week. I want to jog, ride bikes, or swim but I home school so I don't really have "free time" to exercise much so I'm going to try to make an effort to get up early to fit it in (hard since I'm not a morning person).

3. Run 1 mile without walking.

Life goal:

Start a garden with my kids (we just moved to Southern Florida).

10 lb babies.Wow! Very impressive. Diet is 80% of the battle, so you'll be good if you focus on that. Maybe for the just get moving-do stuff with your kids. Go on nature walks, hikes and play on the playground with them. The garden is a great idea. My son alwasy helped in the garden with me, it helped him like his veggies. Have fun homeschooling, and enjoy your time with your kids. I homeschooled my son and am glad I spent the time doing it.

Wow what kind of hernia? Hopefully its dealt with/manageable!

As far as free time goes... I have a friend who does their squats while brushing their teeth.

Maybe looking into activities like that might help find nifty ways to combine activities like that.

Great to have you on board!

Not sure exactly what type of hernia it is. All I know is that I have about a 1" gap down my mid section where my ab muscles don't join together anymore. Doc said insurance should cover it, but I just don't know when I can take weeks off to recover (no lifting and such). It doesn't hurt, so I keep putting it off.

I don't usually have a problem fitting in weights and squats and such. It's cardio I have problems with. I recently figured out that I can jog while my kids ride their bikes, but my kids (my 5YO in particular) don't like to go very far.

Thanks Elastigirl. A few years ago I lost a few pounds for an anniversary cruise and found that watching the food definitely helps, but sitting on my bum just makes me want to eat more so the exercise makes me really think before I put something in my mouth. 2nd year homeschooling. We've had some ups and downs of course, but I really know this is where we need to be right now.

Totally true on the excercising making you think before you eat. Have you thought of sprints or intervals? Those are effective and can be done in a short amount of time. I started jump rope, and that gives me a heart pounding exercise in just a short time

I'm pretty sure I'm not going to be able to update every day on my progress but I'll do my best.

The last 2 days have been pretty good.

1. Watching what I eat. Finding it's really hard starting around 3:30 till dinner and then again close to bed.

2. Got in 1 mile of jogging/walking yesterday while my daughter rode her bike and my son ran beside me (he had a flat on his bike or he would have been riding as well).

3. Hoping to hit the store today to buy the supplies I need to get some seedlings started (since the house has been empty for quite some time before we moved in, some serious work needs to happen before I can plant anything in the ground. So bad, I need help from hubby and he's been really busy lately.).

Another day of sticking to the diet. According to my calorie count I can even have some dessert! Gonna try to get in a little exercise tonight while watching some TV. Tomorrow is probably going to be too busy for a run, but maybe on Friday or Saturday (if Rina doesn't get in the way)?

You are doing great, keep it up! That would be great if you could start gardeining soon. Funny to be thinking of gardening for me now. I live in the NW and it is too cold and dmap too even think about it this time of year. Hopefully Rina will just downgrade and be no interference with any one's plans

Well, the last 2 days have been pretty good. Thursday I didn't do any real exercise as the kids have 4 hours of co-op classes that I drive 2 hours to get them to. Was still able to stick to my diet while we were gone though. I packed it the night before so I wouldn't pack easy stuff (aka. bad for me) at the last minute.

Yesterday the kids had a PE class they go to and they are working on the Presidential fitness award so when the kids ran their 1/4 mile (they are both under 8) I ran with them. Enjoyed it so much I kept going and did a full mile (and my kids did a total of 3/4 mile with me too). Diet went well yesterday too. Finding that the food cravings in the afternoon are better since I've adjusted what I eat early in the day to allow for a more filling snack around 3PM (avocado - yum). I also did some resistance band work after the kids when to bed.

Trying not to get the scale and measuring tape out till Monday, but my pants feel a little more lose. I'm good with that, considering that's my ultimate goal and not real weight loss (I have no problems gaining weight as long as it's muscle and I feel and look better in my clothes).

Raining today so probably no outdoor exercise. Kinda bummed about that since yesterday's run felt so good. Oh, and I ordered a Garmin watch the other day and it's supposed to come in the mail today so I'm dying to take it for it's first run.

One more thing... Kids and I planted some seeds to get the seedlings started two days ago. Local store ran out of a couple seeds I wanted (my kids favorite veggie - broccoli being one of them) so I ordered some and they should be here in a few days. Hoping that once the rain lets up, the family can start working on clearing the area outside where we're going to put the garden once the seedlings get going.

Sounds like you are doing awesome. Great way of incorporating your life into fitness by just doing PE day with your kids. And a great example for them!

Update for the end of week 1.

Yesterday the weather ended up cooperating and I was able to get in a 2 mile jog (with my new Garmin). I broke down and got on the scale today and it says I've lost 3 lbs. Yippy! Hubby even made a comment that my clothes are fitting a little more lose (so I'm not imagining it). Overall, a great week in my book. Hoping I can keep up the diet as well as exercise for week 2.

Some of the seedlings have already started to sprout. Still waiting for a few seeds to show up so we can get those started as well.

Goals for week 2: Jog 1 or more miles at least 4 times. Start clearing out area where garden is going to be.

Well, it appears my daughter has a cold. Considering I homeschool and hubby usually works at night it means running could be hard this week. Got to do some walking with the kids last night as they trick-or-treated though so I'll count that I suppose. Diet is still going well (I lucked out because most of what my kids got yesterday isn't food I like so I'm not even remotely tempted).

Has it really been 3 days since I've updated? Ugh! I have been SO busy and it won't be getting easier in the near future. Except for yesterday the diet has been going well (I went 200 cal over my goal). For some reason I really felt hungry throughout the day so rather than binge at the end of the day I just gave in throughout the day with mini snacks that when added up took me over my calorie goal. My daughter has made a miraculous recovery from her cold, yet I've only been able to get in a run once so far this week. Tried this morning and my son complained that it was too windy so we quickly went back home. Hoping to get hubby to watch the kids so I can go out by myself shortly instead.

Did some research last night and may have found a gym to join. We moved to the area 2 months ago and I've been trying to avoid the gym membership because I try to do as much as possible at home, but I think I found a place that is inexpensive even without a long-term contract and stays open late (important since I can't get in a good workout till after the kids are in bed).

The garden is coming along. All seeds have been planted in their starter greenhouses or pots. Garden area is in the process of being cleaned out (ran out of trash can space so in a state of waiting right now till after trash day). Layout of plants has been determined. Now to get the planter bed ready and the starter plants along further so they can be planted in the garden.

Last week's goals went OK. Stuck to the diet pretty well. I have yet to get the measuring tape out, but I think I've thinned a bit (my clothes fit a bit more lose). Exercise goal didn't go as well. I only ran 2 times last week (instead of the goal of 4). Still have not joined a gym... now that the sun is rising earlier I'm trying to figure out if I have a better shot of fitting in some exercise without the gym. Good news is I found a place that is $39 down and then $10 per month (no commitment).

TurtleD to answer your question... loving the Garmin. Still haven't figured everything out, but it's nice to know my distance and time at this point.

Goals for this next week

Exercise: Run at least 2 miles in one run once this week.

Diet: Go 1 day without eating a dessert type food (meaning no cookies, jello, chocolate, doughnut, etc). I have a sweet tooth and I just need to prove to myself that I can do this.

Life goal: Get the garden area completely cleaned and ready for hubby to put in the raised planter bed

A bit bummed that I have not gotten in more exercise (especially in the form of running) this week. The kids have their PE class tomorrow so hopefully I will get in a run with them tomorrow. Completely broke the diet the other day (we went out for pizza with the kids to celebrate reading success last month), but am back on track. Thinking tonight will be the night with no dessert. Oh, and the kids and I finished prepping the garden area today. Now for hubby and I to get together about the design and get the bed built.
