hurley8604 - getting back to basics

Recommended Posts

What do you do when your 2014 resolution was to lose 10 pounds and then you end up gaining 10 pounds instead? Pick yourself up and try again. So here I am, picking myself back up and continuing on my goal to get healthy.

This time around I’m deciding to go back to basics, in a way. Essentially, just clean up my diet. For the most part, I think I’m just going back to my very first challenge with 2 of my goals.

Main 3 goals:

  1. Track food 5 days a week
  2. Cut back on Chai and Pepsi.
    1. 2-3 cups of Chai a week
    2. 1 bottle (16oz) of Pepsi a week
  3. Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize!
    1. Apply body moisturizer after every shower

I fell off the wagon on tracking last challenge. I need to get better at watching exactly goes into my mouth, see if that is truly where my problem lies.

For a while I was really good on cutting back my k-cup chai latte and pepsi use, but I got back into old habits. So much sugar and bad stuff!

I’ve never been good at keeping up with a moisturizing routine for my body. I need to. My skin is so dry. I literally just cut the side of a finger with one of my dull finger nails by accident last night. I do a good job with my face, so I don’t know why I can’t do my body. And since I’ve really started swimming and it’s winter this is something I really need to do for my body. I set up a humidifier last night – just overnight it used a little more than half of the tank. Eep!

Mini goal:

Clean my bedroom!!!!

It looks like a war zone. I don’t think I have put clothes away in over 6 months. And all my gym stuff and bowling pins (trivia trophies, I can explain if people really want) are in front of my closet blocking access.  My goal is sometime in the next 6 weeks to clean my room and get everything back to where it should be.

Scoring: Each Main Goal will be graded on a scale of A-F. Fully completed will get an A while never even attempted will get an F. Partially completed or half assed attempted will get somewhere in the B-D range.

Nah, not your crazy talking. If it is, it's having a nice convo with mine! For some reason my brain is just telling me to keep it nice and simple this challenge. I would love to go all out crazy because I have a vacation I want to be in shape for, but I know what I want can't be achieved in 8 or so weeks.

Yay!

The trophies - once upon a time I use to belong to an events group (my membership lapsed 3 days ago). About once a month one of the events was trivia. A local restaurant/bowling alley holds the event so we would just put in our reservations and show up. If enough teams play, they give out an old bowling pin as the second or third place prize. For about 2 years I tried to get the pin, then I finally got it last year. Then I got 2 more. The there was a night i couldn't go, but my friends team won so he took it and gave it to me. Now if it's not my team that wins, but one of my friends, and if no one on their team wants it, they give it to me. It's kinda turned into a joke. I have 7 pins, the goal is to get me all 10 and then try to convince the restaurant to give me a bowling ball if I get to 11.

Stupid question time, and I really am a little embarrassed I need to ask this.

If showering twice within 12 hours, do I need to moisturize after each one?

I shower at night before I go to bed, but tomorrow I'll be working out in the morning. So, do I moisturize tonight and then 12 hours later do it again after that shower? To me, that just seems like a lot. But then again, this is one reason why I'm not good at it.

I wouldn't. I would just moisturise at night before bed. I think there is such a thing as over-moisturising, I read somewhere it can be bad for your skin and disrupt your natural oil production but I have no idea how accurate this is. If you feel your skin is dry after showering post workout tomorrow maybe consider getting a moisturising shower gel instead?

hey! following.

re: the moisturizing. if your skin feels awesome after a shower, then no, don't do it again. my skin usually feels too tight and itchy after a super hot shower, so I need to either take less hot showers, or moisturize.

I would, but I live in the geographical equivalent of a hair dryer on full blast - it is so damn dry here that one basically turns into Cassandra after a shower, or even a face wash or hand wash. I'm pretty sure I single-handedly fund Lubriderm's entire operating budget between November and April.

Thanks girls!! I'll play around a little bit but I'll go with just once during that time period. Just got out of the shower and my body feels fine, but my face feels super tight so I'll moisturize that like I normally would. I decided I'm going to moisturize after tomorrow mornings shower because I will have just gotten out of the salt water pool and I think my skin will need it more then.

After several vacations to where you are, that I can fully understand! But for me go north and east. And I have to say, that is one of the best descriptions I have ever read. I actually did lol on that.

Just popping in real quick to say that I added an extra 100 yards to my swimming this morning and stayed within 30 minutes. I'm now up to 700 yards :)

My brain was telling me the exact same thing for this challenge!  What's that acronym - KISS? Keep It Simple Stupid.  I've been traveling for the past 4 months, am home for a month (perfect timing for the challenge) and then it's off to Europe most likely for the forseeable future.  I want to be in great shape for walking the streets of Paris but I know myself and I always fail when I put too much pressure on myself or try and do too much at once.  Slow and steady sure as hell wins this kind of race!  Good luck!

End of day report! End of day report! (I said that in my mind like the person yelling the news on the street back in the day)

Track food: check. On the high end (damn dessert), but that's okay because I did exercise this morning.

Chai/Pepsi: Did have a chai today, but I skipped the pepsi at lunch (went out with co-worker to bitch) and had water with a lemon instead even though I so desperately wanted that fizzy goodness to help calm me down.

Moisturize: check!!

NICE!

hey do you like plain seltzer, or seltzer with lemon or lime? that's a source of delicious fizzy goodness that I am often drinking.

Unfortunately, no, I don't. I keep trying it, but to me it tastes..I don't know, just not good. It's almost too fizzy, I think.

I avoided my morning chai, but instead ended up making a mocha. *sigh* It was just so damn cold and even though I wore gloves in the car, my fingers (and everything else, but mostly fingers) were just so cold. And I think I might be coming down with a cold because I'm just so tired, I needed caffeine, hence the mocha instead of just hot chocolate. The good/bad news, and a little TMI, is that mochas and my stomach don't always agree so I'm back on the road to being, ahem, regular, after some not so great eating over the weekend.

I'm going to have to watch that when I'm not at work and can have the sound on. Why do I have the feeling that it's probably as annoying as I think it is?

Hit the gym this morning. Showered afterwards (of course, otherwise, eww), but didn't moisturize. As I was drying off I could still feel all the moisturizer I applied last night still on my skin. So far so good. The only thing I may need to do is buy some hand moisturizer to keep at my desk. The feel fine, but looking at them they look dry.

I'm also having a minor WTF moment. I decided I'm going to stop at Panera to pick up some Broccoli Cheddar soup for dinner. So I put it in my tracker to see if I can even afford it today. Went right to Panera's website and got the nutritional value. I feel like it should be a lot worse than it is. They have a bowl (regular, not bread bowl) listed as:

Calories: 330

Fat: 21

Sat Fat: 14

Trans Fat: 1

Cholesterol: 75

Sodium: 1390 (yikes!)

Carbs: 23

Fiber: 8

Protein: 14

Put everything into my tracker for today (what I've had and plan to have) and as of right now I'm coming in as:

Calories: 1103 (under by 177)

Carbs: 153 (in range)

Fat: 34 (in range)

Protein: 55 (under by 5)

Fiber: 20 (under by 5)

In the numbers above, I've also included a baguette from Panera and a glass of milk for my dinner. I can deal with the protein and fiber being off by 5g, it's the calories that are throwing me. I thought for sure I'd be around 1400 or so.

I am fairly shocked by that cheddar broccoli soup calorie thing too!

I recently picked their mixed veg soup b/c it was the lowest calories and I was SO disappointed. It was like eating a ketchup broth. I should have stuck with the black bean, it is always satisfying.
