Meet Me on Mars (Year long running challenge)

Recommended Posts

There is a running challenge called Meet me on Mars that I recently signed up for and I wanted to post here (and in the scouts) in case anyone else wanted to join.  It's free to sign up, or you can pay to receive a medal or T-shirt at the end of the year noting how far you ran.  The goal is for everyone to log the miles they run all year, and as a whole to run enough miles to reach Mars.  They allow you to create jogging teams to see how far your friends have run, so I spoke with the people setting things up, and they set up a Nerd Fitness jogging group if anyone else wants to join.  Signing up for the team only lets you see how far other people on your team have ran. If you want to join, once you have signed up and all go to the edit my profile page and you'll see a drop down box labeled 'jogging team' from there you can choose Nerd Fitness. I figured lots of people run already, so it's a good way to see how far we can go together.  Hope to see a couple of you joining me on Mars. :)

Well I did put running on my 6-week Challenge. Also, bought that Zombie, Run! app. Maybe this could be a good motivator to actually do it.

What would be a good number of miles I should set it as?

When I was reading the instructions, they advised people to try to aim for running 1,000 in the year.  That comes out to slightly less than 3 miles a day. Granted, some days you (speaking in general here) may not get any running done, and others you may get many more than three. I'm fairly new to running and I don't run every day and I'm aiming for the 1,000.

Here are the amounts they rank people at on their site:

  • 1 mile = Official Moon Jogger (the first year they aimed to go to the moon)
  • 100 = space ranger
  • 500 = cadet
  • 750 = private
  • 1,000 = officer
  • 1,500 = ensign
  • 2,000 = lieutenant
  • 2,500 = commander
  • 3,000 = captain
  • 4,000 = commodore
  • 5,000 = admiral
  • 6,000 = specialist
  • 7,000 = executive
  • 8,000 = sergeant
  • 10,000 = colonel
  • 12,000 = general
  • 15,000 = master commander general
  • 20,000 = chief commander general
  • 25,000 = ultimate master sergeant major

To reach the 25,000 miles in a year you'd have to average around 69 miles a day.  So I'd say if you're new to running like me aim for something low because you can always do better than you expected. :) These titles are the titles that will be put on the medals should you purchase one.  I'm certain that if you go over the miles you predicted you would get the medal for the higher group, and not the one you aimed for originally.

I think they also let you count biking and swimming, but you have to calculate it with the proper multipliers so that it all works out evenly.  And of course you can always walk instead of run.

I want to meet the gal/guy that can run 69 miles a day! That would be most impressive. Like making your own lightsaber impressive.

1 mile Swim = 3 mile Jog/Run

3 mile Bike/Rollerblade = 1 mile Jog/Run

1 mile Rowing = 1 mile Jog/Run

(from Official Rules)

Looks like good motivation for someone (me) who needs to walk/jog and bike more, in addition to that whole swimming thing.

According to the record for last year, the person who ran the most ran 8206 miles.  I find that very impressive. I wonder if that is the highest anyone has ever gone.  Going to see if they have records for previous years...

Thanks for adding the distance calculations Syren!

Also, we have 4 people on the team so far. :)

Oops, double post.

So here is the story of Perry, the guy who ran the 8,000 miles last year.  All I can say is wow. He broke the record for running from New York to Los Angeles.

Love it and signed up for it.  Since biking miles count I went for Cadet....so many space cadet jokes, so little time.  So that is one more for team Nerd Fitness.

Glad to see you all!

Added my miles today for my 10 mile trail run (I walked, :P ) Saturday and for my swimming and biking yesterday.

Also, I read back over the rules, and discovered that as they do this event every year, they keep track of how many miles you run each year, so it is possible to eventually make it to ultimate master sergeant major without running a huge amount every day if you are willing to put in several years work!

As a whole, with everyone on Moon Joggers participating, we have already ran further than the moon!

Interesting. I have made about 4 miles, given the walk yesterday and the swim today. As a swimmer, I feel a little odd about multiplying my distance. I mean, sure there is more resistance, but I swim because I don't like to feel like I'm sweating... or that's one of the reasons.... :D

For me I'm more thinking, 'I have to divide my bike time? Don't they know how long I had to bike to get those miles?!' because I'm very slow. :P I suppose there is some standard formula for how much effort the average person puts out when swimming and biking versus running, and that's where they are getting the numbers from.  At any rate, biked 20 miles so I'm adding 6 miles for me. :)

As a group we've gone 58 miles so far this year!

25,000 miles in a year :nightmare:  At a pace of 5.5 mph that would take you just over half the day. To get a day off you'd have to run more than a day to make up for it. Jeez.... If there were ever unrealistic expectations.

I don't think they actually expected anyone to be able to do that in a year. At least I hope not! When I went back and read things over a second time they do count your miles every year you compete, and they are planning to run to a different planet each year, so if you participated for several years you could earn a pretty high rank eventually.  Me, I'm just hoping to one day hit 1,000. :P

Welcome to the team Nerine and Awkward Active. :D

The way that have teams set up on the moon joggers site, teams are more to see how well your friends are doing, but there's no reason we couldn't aim for that as our goal for the year.

No miles for me yesterday as I was busy working on a project for work.  Hoping to get some done today.

As of today we have nine people on our team and 71 miles done.  We're almost at 100. :D

AwkwardActive, you can log bike miles, just divide them by 3.

On a side note, I discovered today that I was entering my times wrong.  I had put what I thought was 4 hours for my ten mile walk, but had actually put 4 minutes. Got my times fixed now.

As of right now as a group we are 5 miles shy of hitting 100!

Question for you all, the page list our team by our real names, I wish there was a way to use our Nerd Fitness names instead, but I've not yet found one.  Would everyone be okay with me announcing here when people hit the milestones? It's just be a post saying 'name hit 100 miles today, congratulations to our new space ranger' or something like that. But as the page has our real names listed it would be real names. If people are not comfortable with me posting real names here I won't do it.

In general I plan on logging my miles once a week.  So that will go up over 200 by Saturday or Sunday.  LOL  When time permits I will log more often.
