Belly Dance!

All Guilds, All Styles and Experience Levels

Let's shimmy, shake, and step up our fitness through this fun dance form!

I don't have a particular format in mind, just want to find, support, and share with other nerds who are into the dance. Let's help each other learn and grow, and see how the group develops!

I'm an enthusiastic older beginner doing American Tribal Style. I've taken a class before, but currently use DVDs to learn, as it's hard to fit classes into my schedule right now. Looking forward to finding other nerds who like to belly dance for fun and fitness!

I was just about to message you and see if this was going to happen this challenge. My background is mostly the classic ATS (I think that's what they're calling it now) I know some of the new moves as well.

Because of scheduling I haven't been able to take with the studio I used to, but hoping to start with another teacher soon. Won't be as much ATS, but would be fun to explore other styles

Also- I'd be willing to film and upload some videos for people to practice with if anyone is interested. Or maybe we could do something with skype? Anyway i can help let me know!

Youtube works... I've also been looking into online classes. Considering using Datura Online, Rachel Brice's site. I have her DVDs and they are great, too.

That sounds great! Videos would be super and maybe we could get Skype or Google Hangouts to work.

Hello! I live in a small town in Southern Japan, and there are NO bellydance classes/studios here. I'm not sure anyone would even come if I started one, because of cultural embarrassment, etc.

I am still very much a beginner, but I took some ITS (some sort of offshoot of ATS, I think), and studied traditional Egyptian cabaret for a while. I loved balance work (especially a tray full of candles) and drum solos, especially. I will be practicing on my own, to YouTube videos and my own music collection.

I have also been hula hooping, which is getting my middle back in the mood to shake!

I've never tried bellydancing in any form...but what the heck, I'm going to try it now!! Shadowlion, was Rachel Brice the teacher you mentioned who incorporated yoga or yoga-like stuff into some of her videos?

Tzippi...If I get a hula hoop I am absolutely counting that as practice. I think it's a great idea.

p.s.  I like the group name!

I have restarted a tradition I always used to do, as a combination "isolating obliques/dental health" activity. I find flossing and brushing my teeth extremely boring, so now I use the time to do vertical figure 8s and reverses..

Glad you like the name!

Yes, it was Rachel Brice. Her "Serpentine" DVDs (2 disk set) are the ones I use for the yoga warmup and cool down and there are good leg strengthening and isolation drills. The shimmy drill on disk one is too advanced for me and I haven't really gotten to the second disk yet. Her "Bellydance Arms and Posture" breaks the movements down mostly for upper body.

For you, at this point, I'd say you could use a large part of Disk One of Serpentine because of the yoga, though you have much more yoga background than I do, so it might be too basic on that.

You can check out her online program, which has a lot of different teachers and levels and styles to get an idea of what is available. It's Datura Online.

Maybe some of the more experienced dancers could recommend good YouTube starter videos...

Nice on the hula hooping. That sure will work your middle!

Sounds like you've got a workable practice, but half the fun of the tribal styles is the group work. Too bad there isn't anything in your area.

Yeah. I miss it a lot. Nothing here, unless I can get a bunch of the expats excited. As soon as I move back to the US, though . . .

Hello everyone! So glad to see a belly dance group here!

Dance is part of my challenge. 4 days a week I'm doing a DVD from www.Worlddancenewyork.com. They allow you to stream them for 3 months at a much lower cost than if you were to buy a DVD and have it shipped (being in Ireland it would probably cost a bit).

I'm trained in Raqs Sharqi and Tribal, but going back to basics soon as I'm starting to teach my own class for beginners in April.

Thinking of doing a video on the 2 styles of zilling for ATS, is this something people are interested in?

Welcome, BattleKat558! That sounds like a good deal on the streaming videos. Great that you'll be teaching a class soon and that you've made dance part of your challenge!

Count me in! I have a book/CD and a DVD to learn zills, but I never seem to get to them. Maybe doing it with the group will get me on track!

I love the Datura website, but it's a little expensive for how much I'll be able to use it. I just ordered Rachel Brice's Serpentine DVD set. I hope I have enough experience to keep up - the reviews say it is definitely not for beginners. I'm also excited for the yoga practice attached to it. I've seen dancers screw up their backs and knees (especially knees - Turkish drops) so I love the idea of training backbends with yoga to strengthen.

Because I love floorwork. Especially balancing floorwork with a tray full of lit candles!

Tried out the videos Tzippi posted. The cat was in a different room, so there were no witnesses :-)  I also ordered the Serpentine DVDs...I've been wanting to work on back bending anyway, so the videos look like they will be great. Also googled "zilling." Overall, I think I made good progress for one night.

I can get a couple of other videos from Netflix, and there are bits of things on youtube, but I thought it would be good to have a video to get started.

Just to clarify for everyone (since Googling "zilling" comes up with a region in France), zils/zills are the little finger cymbals some dancers play while they dance. They aren't required, but can be really fun.

I wrote a whole thing about the baladi rhythm but it only made sense in my own brain, and the only vid I could find that was similar to what I was taught was some German guy speaking German (maybe Dutch, but I'm pretty sure German).

Okay the video quality sucks, but i said I would get this up tonight

after I did this I realized the song I was going to demo with is over 5 minutes long, and I just dont have that much zilling in me tonight.

Below is the vid, I will try and get the music up (with or without my zilling) in the next few days

might try again once i figure out a better way to record (and maybe a little more planning)
