SarahSmall: Taking on the Challenge

DAY FOUR!

Had a bad day for many a reason, one of which was the super crappy weather which saw me say "screw this" and get a taxi to work. One of my challenges was to walk to work and back four out of five days, and today's fail means I've missed two mornings this week (but no walk backs). I'm counting this as one day missed total, so tomorrow I've got to make sure I walk there and back to complete that challenge for week one.

I'm pleased that I managed to listen to my body this morning too, as I woke up feeling hungry and angry but instead of putting my lovely colleagues through the hell of hangry morning Sarah, I had a bowl of porridge with raisins and just factored it into my calorie count for the day.

Also kept to my calorie limit today. Pleased, but it's been such a shit day I'm clocking out early. (More sleep = More health. Every cloud...)

Sorry to hear you had such a sucky day but good call on the porridge, I think properly listening to your body and feeding it when you need to is a great method.

As for IF, I had a success with it in the past too. Research on IFing with women tends to point to a larger eating window but as Wovercast said, try different methods and see what suits you. It doesn't matter if all the research in the world points to it not working in women as a homogeneous group, if it works for you then it's an excellent plan.

I feel ya, sister. I had one of those days this week, too. Instead of stress eating, I turned to stress uneating (success!).

Way to keep on with your goals even though things were crappy.

I hope today was/is better!

Guuuuurrrlllll.....we on the same page! -_- My body is SORE and I was SO TIRED yesterday! Surprisingly so, but we just gotta keep at it. Listening to YOUR body is SO IMPORTANT. I've had to make slight modifications here and there to make sure I'm best taking care of me. And that's a constant process of trying things and tweaking them to fit your goals. :) You are doing SO GREAT!! Having other people fighting to make positive and healthy changes in their lives too helps keep us all motivated! I had a bleck day yesterday too so you are not alone. Keep it up!

Thanks, you wonderful people :) Feeling a lot better and yesterday wasn't a great day for calories, but it was a good day for life (but more on that in a minute...)

Agreed that it's definitely a 'you do you' situation - think I'll look into it in more depth... :)

Just to add to the IF conversation. I saw this posted in another thread...

Thanks, Wovercast - I'll have a look...

Thanks love :) I guess if we didn't have the lows, the highs would never feel so high! Here's to a good second week, and lowlowlow good day:bad day ratios for us all! ;)

DAY FIVE!

Whoops. Well, actually, not too whoops because it made me happy but whoops in that it wasn't the most calorie friendly day on the planet!

I felt much better yesterday, and the things that happened to make Thursday so crap got either sorted or are much more in control and easy to deal with so a weight was off my shoulders. THEN I got my new scales and measuring tape delivered (woohoo!) AND the magazine I work on (sub-editor, yo) got delivered which is always the best of days! It's a BEAUTIFUL adventure travel magazine, full of real-life stories of expeditions and journeys with heart-stopping photography. Shameless plug right there because I LOVE it. \

We also had a brainstorming meeting at work where we ended up drinking tequila and watching the 'Smack My Bitch Up' music video (uncensored version). We effectively got drunk and watched porn. My job is weird sometimes.

In terms of calories...the day started out great. Porridge in the morning. Falafel and chicken salad (without dressing) for lunch. No snacks. I was on a (not even a sausage) roll. Then I got a text from my bestie:

"Hey so my temp job for this week is in Canary Wharf! I'm in London! I finish at 6 so let's have dinner..."

And since this girl makes me so goddamn happy it wasn't an opportunity I was going to diet my way out of.

So Pizza Express happened and there was overeating and beer. #SorryNotSorry.

Pulling out my phone and opening up MyFitnessPal that evening I felt like a puppy who'd chewed seven pairs of shoes, sitting at the feet of their master. I felt like a student who'd passed a rude note in class and gotten caught by the headmistress. Like climbing in through the window when you snuck out for an evening and running straight into mum.

1,099 CALORIES OVER ALLOWANCE! FUUUUUUUUUCCC*********

I could hear my app tutting.

BUT. I'm weighing it up. One bad day out of seven is allowable, and on every other day I've been under my calorie goal. When I work it all out even, I'm actually only 300 odd over for the week so far, and there's still two days to go where I can make that up. Clutching at straws? Maybe. Keeping me on track? Definitely.

On to another day...

DAY SIX!

Today I had two Weetabix for breakfast, a mug of miso soup for lunch and now I'm sat eating celery dipped in salsa with some grilled chicken, spinach and a dash of mango chutney. Not bad, not bad.

The more interesting part (Holy jesus, you've had a boring day when this is the most interesting part...) of my day is the fact that my room is now SPOTLESS! Which is very exciting (groan). I think i've done an incredible day of exercise given the cardio work (scrubbing the floors and surfaces, hoovering and de-fluffing a woollen rug) and the weight training (bringing boxes of books downstairs...realising there's no room...bringing them back upstairs...) I've done!

Last day of Week One tomorrow...determined to go to the gym. Will let you know how that goes. Eek.

Did you go to the gym yesterday?

Thanks love! :) Safe to say it's certainly not looking as clean as it was any more but hey, it's a marathon not a sprint ;) Didn't manage the gym on that particular day, but I cracked out the yoga mat and did some of the yoga bootcamp a colleague gave me.

DAY...WELL...ALL THE DAYS!

So this past week+ has been...err... HECTIC.

But I'll break it down since i've been so MIA!

WEIGHT

So it's not been a great week for eating! I was taken out for dinner twice, both times to Indian restaurants, had a lunch meeting where all that was on offer was carby sandwiches and crisps, and went for a colleague's birthday drinks (heavy sugary drinking), out for drinks with a friend (heavy sugary drinks) and had my first business meeting for my exciting new project!! More on this later, but heavy sugary drinking was involved...

BUT

Despite this lack of control, I managed to cut down on other days and be aware of eating well during the day if I was going out in the evening and so still managed to lose 1.6lbs, taking my total to just over 5lbs lost since starting the 6WC! Woohoo :)

THREE GOALS

Walking to work has been a...well. Fail. A mixture of being out and too far away to walk in the evenings, having breakfast meetings across town and working late Wednesday night meaning I needed to get a cab home (and sleeping in AGAIN on Friday...any suggestions for super heavy sleepers?!) meant I walked to and from work a grand total of four times out of ten this week. Oops. Will try harder this week.

On the bright side, I haven't snacked once at my desk and I did a couple of the workouts on my NTC app and went dancing another night. Tick tick in my books :)

LIFE QUEST: PROFESSIONAL LEVEL-UP

For some this might seem a weird Life Quest to restrict to six weeks, but I've been gunning for this promotion for a long while now and I needed to make it a Life Quest for this six weeks to force me to proactively make it happen. I joined the company I'm at as an intern almost a year ago - a year on the 24th January - and worked for two months before they took me on as an Executive. Four months after that, my manager left, leaving me as a one-man team caring for all of our social media responsibilities for all clients. Scary. BUT I convinced the company that they should hold-out from hiring a new manager, and give me the opportunity to prove myself capable of the job, then hire a new executive to sit under me instead of someone to sit above me. They agreed, and I'm proud to say I've proven myself and I'm doing very well. Except they started taking advantage, and instead of letting me prove myself then promote me, they've decided that paying me less for me doing more is a far more satisfying position for them to be in...gahh. SO. As it's now been six months that I've been doing the job of manager whilst getting the respect and pay of an executive I decided it's time to take it into my own hands...Apologies for the brief history in the life of Sarah but I felt it needed some background!

So anyways. Last week was hectic, as I wrote an article for some White Papers we're doing and it got picked up by a BIG industry publication (PRWeek!) and I've spent the week splashed across their homepage and in their summary emails! Awesome. And I completely (eloquently, artfully and intelligently) shot-down a whole team of people running social media for one of our clients so now they're calling me in to help them out and, potentially, take it off the other team's hands. Whoop! So late Wednesday night, as I was proof-reading the rest of the white paper articles we're publishing, I noticed my picture next to my article with 'Social Media Manager' written beneath it. As my CEO happened to be in the office and standing next to me, I underlined it in red pen and said 'that's not how you spell executive', to which he replied 'no, you're quite right, it's not. But I think manager has a nice ring to it, don't you agree?' EEE! The next day a calendar invite for a 'Review' sprung up in my diary for the first day back in February. I'm excited...

AND I had my first meeting with my new business partner. Nothing solid yet, and no plan to leave my current job or anything as I love it so much, but I had an idea last week which has snowballed into a real plan which has real potential for a completely awesome little project. SO EXCITED.

Second business meeting is tomorrow. Eek!

LIFE QUEST: PROFESSIONAL LEVEL-UP

I just wanted to comment on this one - I admit to being one of those who thought "hmm... interesting goal" and shrugged.  With your background info it makes MUCH more sense and I have to say I am impressed.  I... don't think I would have the guts to stand up to them like you did, and be your own cheerleader and biggest fan.  GOOD FOR YOU, and it looks like you have really made an impression.  All of your weekly accomplishments were good (given the work you are putting in and managed to still lose), but this shows a set of skills I frankly wish I had and am working on developing (self-confidence and such).  Fantastic!

As to MFP, I know what you mean... and glad that having someone "lurking" helps you too!

Thanks Kshennya :) I did wonder if people were doing that, since in most circumstances setting yourself the aim of a promotion in six weeks is a bit mental but hopefully it makes a bit more sense now! Haha.

I've always been of the mindset that you have to be your own biggest fan because no one else will be, and I'm pretty damn ambitious...it's just the making it happen and not letting life get in the way element that I need to knuckle down on! I know where I want to be, but need to make sure I'm constantly working to get myself there - not drifting and seeing what happens along the way. Same goes for the diet and it's the reason I'm here - I know what I want of myself but it's just getting there proactively rather than constantly thinking 'the diet starts Monday...' or 'I'm just too busy...' because it's all rubbish! :)

Really, there is so much win here that I don't know where to start so I am going to just give you a virtual chocolate orange and a fist bump.

Holy Moly *drools*. PLUS absolute coincidence because I came into work this morning to find a chocolate orange left on my desk as a present! From my lovely biz partner extraordinaire who also found out he's going to be an uncle today! It's been a good day. The chocolate orange got shared around which made my colleagues happy, I didn't eat too much of it (but indulged in a couple of segments) so I was happy, and life is good :)

DAY SEVENTEEN!

Calories: MyFitnessPal is flashing red lights at me and telling me off for not eating enough calories to be healthy...but I ate well so I'm going to ignore it! You tell me:

Breakfast: Cup of coffee with milk and half a sweetener packet, two segments of chocolate orange - 105 calories

Lunch: Pret-a-Manger Crayfish, rocket and avocado salad and Pret-a-Manger egg and spinach protein pot - 306 calories

Dinner: Chicken breast fillet cooked in peri peri sauce, portion of baby carrots, portion of runner beans, skinny chocolate mousse - 330 calories

Total Calories: 741

Thing is, I understand looking at that number, that my calorie count is low...but at the same time I don't think the amount of food is especially small (excluding the fact it's a crap breakfast nutritionally!) given that I spend my entire day sitting at a desk doing no exercise. I walked home from work, but that's only a mile and a half and probably less than 100 calories lost, even walking fast-ish in the cold. Hmm.

No more news for today...except that I've added another challenge (more of a promise to myself) to spend more time looking after myself in other ways too. I'm busy working full-time with projects and other things on the go, but that's no excuse to not spend at least two hours per week just doing a bit of me time. So this evening, instead of watching an episode of Orange is the New Black (so good!) I had a long luxurious shower and face scrub and did my nails. Fabulosa :)
