Fultonator's Focus on Wellbeing

2014 was the worst year of my life. I am hoping to start off 2015 with something positive.

 

I've been gone from NF for a while - I tried to do a challenge at the end of 2014 but wasn't emotionally ready yet. So I'm starting all over again, returning to Adventurers, and keeping this challenge very simple. Normally I have quite specific goals which are easy to measure, but this time I am more focused on how I feel and on doing things for my wellbeing - whether physical, mental, or emotional and I am choosing goals which are a bit broader. This will allow me to do things for myself without worrying about sticking to specific activities... i.e. I don't want to beat myself up because I didn't do my 30 minute walk today, if doing something else was going to make me feel better.

 

With that in mind, although I will be keeping weight stats, weight loss is not my primary goal for this challenge. General wellbeing is my goal.

 

 

Starting Stats

Weight: 199 lbs

Chest: 43" 

Waist: 35"

Hips: 44 1/4"

 

Main Quest

 

To take care of myself. 

 

Daily Goals:

 

1) Do something good for my body 

Ex: A hike, yoga, dancing

+ 1 STA, + 1 STR, + 1 DEX

 

2) Do something good for my mind - Mental wellbeing has been a major hurdle for me recently.

Ex: Read, write, do a puzzle

+ 2 WIS, + 1 CHA

 

3) Do something to relax - January looks to be quite busy and stressful in my job so I need to take time to combat that stress and not let it overwhelm me.

Ex: Bubble bath, massage, music

+ 2 CON, + 1 STA

 

 

Certain activities could overlap these categories; my main concern is making sure I take care of my physical and mental wellbeing everyday and make time to relax and decompress.

 

 

Grading Scheme 

 

Every time I do something for my wellbeing, I earn 1 point. 

 

A = 110+ points

B = 90+ points                                             

C = 75+ points                                            

D = 60+ points                                           

F = less than 60 points

Day 1 Report

 

1) Do something good for my body 

10 (knee) push-ups

Also tracked my eating and was 57 cal under goal. Was also 32 carbs under, 4 fat under, but 7 protein, which is great as I normally have trouble getting enough protein - thanks, beans!

 

2) Do something good for my mind 

Read about 45 minutes or so. 

 

3) Do something to relax

Went to my brother's house and played a board game with my niece, cousin, and mother. Really helped me decompress. We all had a good laugh.

I've decided to reflect not only on what went well each day, but on things that I can try to improve the next day, or throughout the week. So each day I will try to find "something to work on".

 

Something to work on:

Had a lot of trouble falling asleep last night. I might have had too much screen time before bed, so something to work on is getting off electronics an hour before bedtime and see if that helps. Might also brew a herbal tea or do some nighttime yoga.

Day 2 Report


 


Yesterday was a rough day - car troubles first thing in the morning and had to be brought in to garage, then I forgot my water bottle in the car so had none for work, had to work late... Despite that, I think I did OK with goals. I have to keep reminding myself that I don't have to get 3 points EVERY single day.


 


1) Do something good for my body 


Didn't really do this. Was 117 calories over and nowhere near enough protein.


 


2) Do something good for my mind 


Read before bed


 


3) Do something to relax


Made Mr. Fultonator give me a back rub, complete with nice smelling massage oil.

Still had some trouble sleeping. This week I will try to focus on a nice bedtime routine; would love to make it a habit.

Day 3 Report


 


1) Do something good for my body 


Walked during lunch time and walked to a meeting I had in the evening (was originally going to drive as it was -25, but it warmed to -12 so I walked since the meeting spot was only 5 minutes from my place).


 


2) Do something good for my mind 


Read before bed


 


3) Do something to relax


Friends is now on Netflix, do I came home after my meeting a vegged for an hour.

Sleep was better but still needs a bit of improvement. I'm hoping by the weekend I will have a solid routine.

about 45 minutes of walking today - my husband and I walked around downtown at lunch to put up posters for our swing dance club's upcoming event.

Day 6 Report


 


Had to work today - I was facilitating a workshop. Good news is part of the workshop was outside which meant I was able to get a wee bit of exercise.

not so much. I was a bit high strung today

Day 7 Report


 


So the final day of week 1 didn't end on such a great note. Started off great - my husband treated me to breakfast out, which we seldom do. But I got (what I think is) terrible indigestion: running to the bathroom all afternoon, and really bad stomach pains all evening that kept me up. Thank goodness for Pepto Bismol, otherwise I wouldn't have slept at all. The stomach pains were coming in waves and got pretty intense so that I was holding my breath until they passed; I was a little worried that I developed an ulcer (I had an ulcer a couple years ago and it felt very similar). This morning I still have a knot in my stomach but the waves of pain have passed so I think it was only bad indigestion.


 


Unfortunately, I was out for the count pretty much all day.

Something to work on:


For week 2 I want to get outside more. It does me good on too fronts: It is good exercise and also helps my mental health. It is a little hard this time of year because of the cold (and snow/ice) but I would like to make an effort.

Day 8 Report


 


1) Do something good for my body 


Monday night is swing dance night! Got a couple hours of dancing in. Feels so good.


 


2) Do something good for my mind 


After dance class a few of us went out for beers (well, I had an iced tea). I don't get to hang out with friends much so it was good for my mental health.


 


3) Do something to relax


Didn't really get to relax in the evening: dancing and hanging out with friends at a bar are more energizing activities and I really didn't have enough time to "unwind" when I got home.

Every day I bring a big bottle of water to work, but I end up bringing it home still half-full. This week I'd like to work on bringing home an empty water bottle.

Yay swing dancing! Boo stomach pains--hope you're feeling better. I love that your goals are focused on well-being, and allow you to make different activity choices based on how you're feeling. Day 9 Report


 


1) Do something good for my body 


Brought home an empty water bottle. :) I never finish my water while at work, so hopefully this will do my body some good.


 


2) Do something good for my mind 


Was busy running errands all evening so unfortunately didn't take the time to do this.


 


3) Do something to relax


Despite a busy night, I did manage to fit in some reading before bed - only about 10 minutes, but it does let me relax.

Something to work on:


My goal after week 1 was to get outside more often in week 2 and I haven't done that yet. Probably won't happen today since it's -35C with windchill, but I will try my best to find at least one day this week to get outside. It might end up waiting until the weekend.

It's funny, you never realize how good for you it is to just hang out until you've gone a good spell without doing it.

So true. being with friends can be a big boost for my mental health. Depression and anxiety run in the family and I am really trying to focus not just on my physical fitness, but taking time to think about my mental health as well.

Bad day. Binge-eating occurred, unfortunately. I have been very good about not binging, but I was just depressed last night.


Did not take care of myself. 


 


I am feeling better this morning and am hopeful and positive about today.

Day 12 Report


 


1) Do something good for my body 


Our dance club had a winter event with live music. Danced for hours and didn't eat any of the tons of junk food/snacks that were out at the event, although I had TONS of punch. Dancing makes me so thirsty.


 


2) Do something good for my mind 


Took half the day off work. Much needed.


 


3) Do something to relax


Nope. Danced all night and didn't get home until 1am.

Dance all night, that's so awesome! I'm jealous, I've always been really nervous to dance and really klutzy when I try (I know, I know, be brave... some day dancing will make it to the top of the be-brave priority list). Could you do a 10 minute stretch or something after dancing (or those other winding-up activities) as a relax/wind-down when you get home? It seems like a bummer that you can have awesome days and not get full points because of a missed relax-thing... Or maybe you're holding yourself to a higher standard in terms of time commitment, which is also cool.

I should always stretch after dancing. I used to be very good at doing this but have been forgetting lately. Maybe that will be something to aim toward for this coming week.
