BlimeyCharlie Adapts to Survive

It's January so that means only 4 months till Tough Mudder!

giphy.gif

Time to kick it up a notch. The idea of adapt to survive is 2 fold, to adapt my workouts if needed to fit in with life or obstacles that get in the way (instead of just dropping completely) and to adapt my way of thinking so I can finally do something I've been too afraid to do for a long time.

Quest 1 LIFT or, body-weight exercises

Continue lifting 3 times a week. As it's January and the gym I go to is cheap, I'm expecting it to get quite busy in the next few weeks. If I get to the gym and I can't do the lifts I want to do, I will sub lifting for a body-weight workout. BW exercises yet to be decided.

Quest 2 RUN

I haven't done any running since October (naughty me) so I'm aiming to do twice a week to get back into the swing of things. Any running counts, outside or on the dreadmill. I'm not worrying about distance or time, the focus is just to get myself running again.

Quest 3 SWIM

A more accurate description would be LEARN TO SWIM PROPERLY, this is something I've put off my entire life and it's time to get over the fear and get it done. I can sort of swim (as in, I can keep myself afloat and do something resembling swimming to get to the other side of the pool), but have big water confidence issues. I have my first swimming lesson booked for next Saturday.

This quest is a bit vague at the moment. I'll update it after I've had my first lesson and I know what the plan is.

UPDATE - Have one swimming lesson a week and go to the pool and practice once a week

Side Quest ALL WORK AND NO PLAY....

This is basically just making sure I have some downtime for myself that doesn't just include slumping in front of the TV. Last year it felt like I didn't get to do as much as I could have, it was just a constant work, home, eat, sleep, repeat. This year I want to get out and do more stuff or just simply enjoy myself a bit more.

Don't panic! Remember Obstacle Course Races are supposed to be fun!!!!!

Panic was probably an over-reaction. It's not my first so I kind of know what to expect. As long as I get myself fit enough!

Tough Mudder woot!

I hear you on the water confidence. I really have to force myself to put my face in the water, and diving is right out. Taking some classes is a smart move.

I find it impossible to put my face under unless I'm holding my nose. I'm pretty sure that even after my lessons I won't be able to do the walk the plank at TM. Dunking my head under water to get past an obstacle is one thing, jumping from a 12 foot platform into water? I don't think so!

Happy new year Charlie! Loving your moustachioed avatar :panda:

The beginners bodyweight workout here at NF kicks butt, if you are still looking for BW exercise ideas.

I think it's great you are signed up for swimming lessons. As someone who learned to swim in their mid-20s and had never been in water before that, I can honestly say lessons are fab! Good luck with it, you are going to rock this challenge!

Not much to it really. Just slice up the veg and sweet potato into thin slices - I used courgette (zucchini), mushrooms, spinach, garlic and a green chili to add some spice. Fry these in a frying pan until soft, add some cooked chicken then throw on some eggs that have been beaten with a bit of milk. Cook for a minute or two to cook the underside then transfer the pan under the grill (I think you call this a broiler in the USA?) to make sure the top is cooked.

I only used 3 eggs but 4 might have been better as it was a bit thin and it didn't puff up as much as it should have. But then it might be too much for one person so perhaps you could do as a meal for 2 with a side salad.

Balls I read this too late to jump in the car and power down south for dinner!

Yeah, it didn't last that long!

Other than cooking nice food last night, I got my training plan ready for the next few weeks and dug out the ol' one piece swimsuit for my lesson on Saturday.  Good news is it fits better than it used to. Downside, it's the most unflattering item of clothing ever invented.

Going running tonight after work. Probably just a gentle 2 miler to ease back into running.

I love fritatta's (and yes its a broiler here in the US). They are good the next day at room temp if you ever make one that is more than you want to eat in one sitting.

That's good to know. But TBH, when it's on my plate it's getting eaten, either by me or the human dustbin I married!

Tuesday. First run of the week done. Did just over 2 miles in around 25 minutes. Not sure of the exact time or distance as I forgot to charge my Garmin (DOH!) Happy with how I did, expected to be huffing and puffing after 10 mins seeing how long it's been since I've run but it actually felt quite easy.

Today. Gym this morning. Did Workout B from my Training Log of Awesome. It took a little longer than expected so might be to cut a few sets of bench press if I'm in a hurry in the future. Or I could get up earlier (NOOOOO!)

Bro's don't let Bro's miss Bench Day!

OK Bro, you can yell at me if I try and duck out of bench day! I won't drop it completely, just not do as many sets.

I am often guilty of failing to charge my Garmin. I wish the charge would last longer.

It's always a pain when you forget to charge it before a long run. But still, it's a good way to make you go faster.**Must finish run before Garmin dies!!!**

The first full week back at work after the holiday's had made me pretty tired over the last few days, so not much has happened challenge wise. Finally feel like my sleep pattern is back to normal and had a good nights sleep last night, so the plan for the rest of the week is:

Today - Body Weight workout this evening (had a bit of a lie-in and missed the gym the morning!)

Saturday - First Swimming lesson

Sunday - Gym followed by treadmill run

Now I've posted my plans, I have to follow through!
