Hello Scouts!

I took a break for about a half a year, but I am back!  I need your help to stay on track.  After a couple of months of falling into the holiday eating hole, I need some support and accountability to climb my way out.  My goals are weight loss and to maintain or even slightly improve my fitness level.  Gotta make sure I can PR in the 10 miler I'm running in April.  Here are my goals:

* Log food 5 days a week and stay at or under my calorie goal for those days

* Exercise at least 3 days a week throughout the winter, including both speed and distance work for running

* Post updates and check on other people on this site at least twice a week.

I see my friend 18ck is still around!  Will be on the lookout for others and new friends.   All are welcome!  I'm excited to be back in this wonderful community, and I'm really looking forward to this next challenge.

Hey! Welcome back!

Sounds like you know what you need so that part is done.

What kind of support and encouragement are you looking for from us? We can light fires as needed - we have earned that badge. And we can listen and advise as you like. Mostly, it's likely, we'll understand and lend a figurative hand in getting back up and to applaud her successes with you!

Thanks, Terinatum!  I'm glad to be back.  You hit on all of the major support items I'm looking for--fire lighting, advising, cheer-leading!  I do a lot of running and some other kinds of exercise.  But I've got two six year old boys to take care of, so eating well can be tricky.  We do a lot of take-out, so when I'm not careful I can overeat pretty easily.  I always like hearing about what others do to keep their eating in check.  And nice job on that 87 pound weight loss, and running goals!  That's awesome!

The wife and I have started mass cooking, between work, the 2 yr old, and 2 adults training for halfs + crossfit there just isn't enough time in the day. I think I made like 30lbs of pulled pork this weekend that was divided up, we kept out enough for this week and froze the rest in roughly week sized bags. It reheats well and is very versatile. We've done some other cooking like that in less than healthy options, but we don't eat paleo it makes both of us sick when training. The only thing we generally have to cook during the week is veggies, unless the desire for something else strikes we always have steak, pork chops, and chicken ready to go in the freezer.

Good luck with the goals! Food tracking is just beyond me any more, I don't know why I just can't commit to it and do it anymore.

Nice! I have never been able to get my act together enough to do the mass cooking thing.  What sort of recipe do you use for the pulled pork?  I tried paleo for awhile too, but found it difficult to stick to for long periods of time.  I eat mostly paleo food, but I'm not going to flip out over having an english muffin or a piece of cheese.

And yeah, the food tracking can be soul sucking.  But, it has been the only way I've been able to get my eating habits under control, so I must go back to it in dire times!  ;-)

The weather here has been nasty.  Snow-storm yesterday that only dropped around 4 inches, but that was 3 more than our state had prepared for, and it was chaos.  My normal 25 minute commute to work would have been 90 minutes had I left at my normal time.  Highs are in the low 20's.  I'm not usually scared to bundle up and go running when it's cold, but I was contemplating skipping my planned run yesterday due to the icy conditions.  Luckily one of my co-workers shamed convinced me to go, and it wasn't as awful as I had feared.  Having company always makes a terrible run a little bit better.  We did about 5 miles, kept the pace pretty slow due to ice.  It was more strenuous that normal running, and I was freezing and ravenous when I got home.  We ended up going out for dinner on a whim, and I didn't do a good job of reigning in the free bread consumption or choosing my sides smartly.  Need to remember that when going out to dinner, pre-examination of the menu is my friend!

Now I have to decide if I want to brave 23 degress for a track work out tomorrow (12 400's....I LOVE 400's), or if I want to try a new "Cardio Circuit" Class at the gym.  Votes?  :)

This time I just rubbed some salt, pepper, and powdered mustard on the outside and smoked it for about 28 hours. If we make it in a slow cooker just add some salt pepper garlic and onion powder. We have a few other things we will do from time to time like pork tacos but usually its very generic so it can be used for whatever later. In the slow cooker we just let it cook all night, shred it in the morning, and then we have it for lunches and dinners.

Scouts!  I met all my goals so I felt like I had a really awesome first week. That is, until I stepped on the scale today.  Scales suck!  I am trying to not live and die by that number, otherwise I get depressed.

Here's a recap of some of the week that I haven't posted about yet.  On Thursday I ended up going with the Cardio Circuit class instead of the track workout.  The track was still icy from the snow.  The circuit class ended up being a combination of spinning and step aerobics, neither of which I have ever done before.  It wasn't really my thing.  The spinning was a bitch.  You know, sometimes you're like, "This is SO hard, I LOVE IT!"  Well, that is not how spinning was for me.  My nether regions hurt, like, right away and still haven't recovered.  The step aerobics were fine, but a coupe of the  moves I had trouble getting down without any sort of practice or real demonstration of what to do.  Oh well, lesson learned!  On Saturday I went to a really awesome tennis clinic for 2 hours.  The first hour was player driven drills.  My favorite one was you play singles where one person always hits cross-court and one person always hits line, so you are constantly running sideline to sideline.  The second hour was match play, with constantly switching partners.  Good time!

I did well with my food this week.  I met my food goals and even cooked dinner twice.  This holiday season has been so busy that aside from large holiday meals and leftovers, I have done no cooking.  It feels good to be getting back into a routine.  Food porn for you:

Dinner for 427 calories: Garlic-lemon shrimp and collard greens with bacon (those green peppers next to my plate are for my son, this is the only green food he will eat):

I LOVED this breakfast for 184 calories.  Seriously, this is a freaking lot of food for that few calories.  I'm channeling Kailer here.  Anyone know what happened to her?

You should hide your scale for the next 5 weeks. Seriously, take it to a friends house or something and don't even think about it. The scale isn't a good measurement of your progress. Have you taken Day 0 pictures so you can compare against? I like to take a set of pictures on each Sunday and then compare all the Sundays of the given challenge. My progress has slowed down but early on the changes were significant. I usually get on the scale 2-3 time a month now just to make sure I'm in the general +/- 5 of where I want to be.

It sounds like you are making great progress regardless of what the evil scales tell you. Keep up the good work

Interesting suggestion!  I've weighed myself daily forever.  It would be so weird to not.  Maybe I'll ease into it by doing once a week to start.  Haven't done pictures--I should do that!  Good call!  And thanks for the support.

Freezing rain overnight meant there were school delays today, so I had a leisurely morning.  Lunch for ~400 calories, FTW!  Eggs scrambled with olive oil, onions, and spinach.  (I am going through a blueberry phase--that is a cup of blueberries there for 84 calories.  Nice!)

thank you!

I failed you today, Terinatum!  I made lime-garlic tilapia and collard greens, but forgot to snap a pic.  You'll have to deal with these two:

Reheated brussells sprouts with bacon, somehow managed not to burn the bacon this time:

And then dinner one night, a spinach and onion omelet, this time burned bacon and brussells sprouts (why am I so bad at cooking bacon??):

I am super proud of all of this cooking lately.  Really, you guys, with the kids having ridiculous amounts of homework (in KINDERGARTEN, for gosh-sakes), and with working and working out, and with me not being a very experienced or capable chef, it's amazing that I've managed to work in these meals.  I am not fast in the kitchen so it takes about as long for me to cook, us to eat, and clean up as it would for us to go out.  There's also something nice about sitting around a table and being waited on.  But I like cooking.  I wish I had more time/energy to devote to it. Next challenge, there will be a cooking element!

As for my current challenge, heavy rain discouraged me from getting my workout in today.  Running in heavy rain just sucks.  So I missed a workout this week, but I will make it up next week.  I have tomorrow off, so I am planning on going to a tennis clinic.  Also, did an 8.3 mile run on Friday after work.  I don't usually do longer than 5, so it felt pretty epic.  I hurt the next morning.  Oh yeah.

Also, virtualmonkey will be interested to hear I haven't weighed myself in 5 days.  A record for me, for sure!  I'll probably check weekly on Mondays.  Last night I had a crap dinner.  I got together with my mom's group and the food on the menu was bagel pizzas and pigs in a blanket.  And I had 3 big cookies for dessert.  Yuck.  Totally overindulged and am feeling it today.  Any party advice?  Eat before and after or something?  If I'm hungry and there's food around...I'll eat.  Heck, if I'm NOT hungry and there's food around, I'll still eat.  I have a hard time just not eating the crappy party food if everyone around me is.

5 days can be rough when you're so used to checking in on that thing! Keep it up and you will only be weighing in every couple of weeks.

As for party advice, eat before you go is always a good option. The other thing to keep in mind is to enjoy yourself. You can't  be 100% on all the time, well you can but for us mortals 100% isn't going to last. Going to a party and enjoying some bagel pizzas and cookies isn't a bad thing, as long as you can keep it in moderation obviously eating 1000 calories over your daily limit isn't a good thing. But if you don't enjoy life what's the point in making sure you live longer?? I have ice cream 3 nights a week, and usually have one night on the weekend where I eat wings or pizza and have a glass of good bourbon. A good rule of thumb I hear a lot is 80/20. Eat right 80% of the time and let yourself live 20%. And don't consider them cheat days\meals. They are just enjoying the little things in life. If you consider it a cheat you've now assigned that is is bad, and with that comes guilt, you shouldn't feel guilty for wanting a stupid cookie.

<rant> Oh yea, I don't believe in 'cheat meals.' It's so negative. If you're allowing it, it's positive! </rant>

Yay on the scale avoidance, I hope it helps.

I usually eat before a party, sneak in a Larabar (even if I never eat it) and take in all that's being offered and choose ahead of time which ones you'll eat. So if you decide there are 2 of the 5 things offered that look great to you, then go for it and enjoy. Mostly it's practice without beating yourself up for not 'doing it right' the first time.

I'm so happy for you, liking to cook. I'm headed in that direction as well. I want the kitchen to be a place of adventure and newness. As for bacon, it's almost always done before it looks done. So, you can bake it and find a good time or fry them and set the flip time and end time. If they come out well, don't change the times. Try under-cooking them first and then cook them more if you have to. I like under-cooked so learning that way was great for me. Good Luck!

Thanks, Terinatum.  Great advice, too.  I have problems with beating myself up, and that leads to really unsuccessful patterns.

I haven't been meeting my check in twice a week goal.  This last week was crazy at work.  But, my eating has been really good and I am already feeling small success in the way my clothes fit.  I like not weighing myself daily, and tell myself to just stick to the plan and things will work out. If you've crafted your plan correctly, it should.  I wasn't so sure I had the right goals because I was really struggling there at the beginning.  But I seem to have crossed some sort of hump where the plan doesn't feel like deprivation anymore, it feels normal, like I'm not fighting back hunger all the time.  So, yay?

Going to tennis class today, psyched!

Yay, you're back!! I'm glad you're trying to re-focus even with it being hectic at work; boy, do I hear you there!!

How was tennis??

Kailer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  You are back, YAY!!!!!!  I'm psyched!  I am enjoying getting to know virtualmonkey and terinatum, but was bummed out that most of the people I met last year are not active or aren't able to follow as many people anymore.  Good to hear from you!  How are things going?  I didn't read through all of your threads while I was gone, but I saw that your hubby returned safely--yay!  How is your running going?

Tennis was awesome!  Two hours of drills an playing, and best of all it was inside because it's been hella cold.  We randomly had a 50 degree day today, so I took advantage and did a 6 mile run with a friend.  It was great!  Things are going well with my challenge.  Last time I left we were both trying to get below 160.  I got there for awhile, but then holiday eating put me back up over.  Having the structure of a challenge and accountability has helped me tremendously get a handle on my eating and things are back on track. Pants are starting to fit again, yay.  I hope you are doing well, and everyone else, too.  :)
