QuirkyDM goes back to the beginning

Still alive.

My previous issue seems to have been resolved thanks to bedrest and maybe antibiotics. I still have an ultrasound next week to ensure everything is on the up and up.

But than I pretty much got some stomach issues come up the next day. Which made me worry if the two issues were related which could turn out pretty nasty. Which by itself was not horrible, but I'm in Sunnyvale this week on a work trip, so access to medical staff isn't an option.

Between it all, no exercise and no getting jobs done. On the other hand, while I have not gone a strict 24 hour fast, I'm consuming about 500-600 calories a day right now. And amazingly, there's pretty little effect. I'm alert, happy and OK.

Next week, when I'm back at home, everything should hopefully be back to normal. And this Saturday, I have the Polar Hero OCR! It is going to be -13C (9F) for the course, so we'll need to bundle up tight.

Waiting to hear how the -13 went. The water at tough guy was -8 allegedly and that was more than cold enough for me ...

-13, I wish.  It was -28 with windchill, although once you got moving you were sweating anyhow, so it didn't end up a factor until my gloves were all wet.  My favorite part was smooching you under the cargo net ;)   You are going to want me to do all your OCR's with you - ha, ha!

OK race update time! The Polar Hero!

I was having stomach and various medical issues the week before while away on a business trip, all of which caused my wife to worry and make her stomach upset. It was highly questionable whether either one of us was going to be in any state to walk on to the course. As the week went on, I started feeling better and so my wife started feeling better.

The night before the race, I end up not getting home from my business trip until 11:00 thanks to delayed flights. Our son caught a cold so he's likely not going to make it tomorrow. And my wife is starting to freak out (as every sane person does before their first OCR) about not being in shape and regretting that she ever signed up.

On the day of the race, the weather was -31C (-24F) with the windchill. We're not quitters in our family. But that is freaking cold, even for crazy canucks like us. Lots of back and forth talking and then we decide we'll dress warm, we'll go out there and we'll go through whatever we can until we decide we're done. The plan all along was to walk the course and do whatever we could handle. When we're done, we'll walk off the course knowing we at least showed up, did some crazy stuff and feeling no shame just because we didn't get a medal at the end. Our friends are willing to watch my son and our cousins who live near the course will pick up my daughter after her race so we are set. Though I'm sure seeing the racer wheeled in on a stretcher right before we were scheduled to start did nothing to calm my wife down.

Yes it was cold, especially walking. But there were lots of obstacles to keep us active and we were ready for the cold. If I had been running, I would have been drenched in sweat. As it was, if I had been running, I would have been dead after the first kilometer. The freezing cold and not being in peak racing condition would have easily killed my endurance. I could feel it on the few runs I did while tying my boots and catching up to my wife and when I was chasing my daughter while she did her run. It would have been brutal. Going forward, I'll know this part of the race and when I do run it, I'll have a better chance of pacing myself appropriately.

This was also my first stadium run, and my wife and I both agreed the environment was used to good purpose. Cargo nets strung over railings that we needed to crawl under, climbing over garbage can walls, leaping over railings down half a level, ( with a padded landing) hauling a hanging tire up two stories and doing a plank walk with hands on one railing and feet on another. And of course, there were stairs.

It was undoubtedly a winter run, too. Lots of snow and the hills and ditches we had to climb through were slick with packed down snow. The bucket carry was full of snow instead of rocks. (and I'll take that trade any day of the week) The stadium stairs were caked with ice, so we had to be careful there. And most of the obstacles were outside the stadium in a snow covered field. (did I mention that we had a foot of snow come down the day before the race?) The highlight was a fantastically steep hill that we had to toboggan down on crazy carpets. The whole day was filled with epic wipeouts that made it as entertaining as any Spartan gladiator pit.

The penalty for a failed obstacle was 20 high knee jumps, 10 for women and I had to manage a few of those. 9still better than burpees) A tennis ball toss through a target and the spear throw. The targets for the spear throw were fairly small and I was low on my target by a good 8 inches. More practice needed this summer. There was also a steep ramp that I would not have made if not for someone helping to pull me to the top. And the burpee station (20 of them) followed by a push up station (30 of them) took me a long time to get through.

But for other obstacles, I was pretty happy with how well I could still do. A platform suspended 8' up was no problem to jump up and on to, nor were any of the other walls or inclined walls I came across. My wife was getting a great workout from all the stairs and hills, so when we had to haul bricks, sandbags or pails of snow on the stairs and hills, I took double duty and carried her load along with mine. I scaled the rope climb no problem and crossed the Platinum rig without falling. I may not be in the shape I was during the summer, but I'm not ready to roll over and die yet.

When we finally left the course, it was at the finish line. My wife is far more awesome than she'll ever give herself credit for and after 2 hours we made it through the entire course and got the medals to prove it. The after race goodies included mulled wine which was the perfect end- along with the huge poutine we bought from a chip truck around the corner. :) It coincided pretty nicely with the crash we experienced once all the adrenaline left our system.

And if anyone wants a different point of view- you know, from a sane person- my wife's report is here.

Wow! Fantastic job. Congrats on pushing through to the finish.

Thanks. For me, I was never in doubt about being able to finish, but seeing my wife go through this was the real reward. As much as I love doing OCRs for me, I'm getting more in the mode of helping other people enjoy and try them out.

That sounds crazy cool, with a hefty side of plain ol' crazy thrown in for good measure! You Canadians really love your platinum rig, I wish we saw it here in the states more.

i think Platinum Rig is from a company nearby, in Ottawa or Montreal. And Montreal has a huge OCR base- pretty much all the new OCRs out here are based in Montreal. So Platinum Rig is making a good business servicing all of them.

----------------------------------

I've had a bit of a hiatus from exercise thanks to work, being sick and other medical issues. I've been shoveling all the snow and got through the Polar Hero, but that's about it. So this morning, I jumped on the treadmill to pick up my 5K training. 2 minutes on and 1 minute off, 8:34min/km pace. The running is fairly easy, as it should be at this pace, but the barefoot is adding lots of challenge. I have a thin line of a blister across the very tops of both my feet, just below the toes. But the legs feel good with the forefoot strike, so I'm pretty happy with that. And the blister should be faded by the time Thursday rolls around to try it out again. :)

Now for the medical stuff I've been going through. If this is too much information, that's fine. You can just skip it. I'm more putting it in here as an educational note for anyone else who ends up going through the same deal as me.

After some ultrasounds, it turns out I do have a small inguinal hernia. It's not bothering me and I'm going to keep exercising, just not with any heavy weights. Has it been there all along? Did I just develop it recently working my lower abs too hard after physio? I don't know. I can think of lots of times when I screwed up my plates or my form over the last year that could be attributed to something like that. I'm scheduled for some followups next month and then I can figure that all out.

Now here's the crazy part, while checking out for the hernia, the doctors also discovered I have kidney stones. Multiple stones. Stones so big, they're not leaving my body anytime soon. Or ever. So now I get to go see a specialist about these, too. I'm totally getting old here. And when you read about what causes kidney stones, do you know what's on the list? Salt and dehydration. (both not an issue for me) Animal proteins. Or anything high in oxalates. Which is dark leafy greens, chocolate, green tea, nuts, sweet potato, etc.. Basically, everything I've changed my diet to include almost exclusively over the last year, especially considering I have high cholesterol thanks to my genetics.

From what I've read, there's different types of stones and they are caused by different foods. So I'll just have to eat healthy for now and let the docs figure it out so I can adjust my diet later. On the flip side, I feel great. In fact, I would have never known I had anything wrong if I hadn't got this hernia and had it checked out. Or until my body totally shut down on me for no apparent reason. Oddly enough, this hernia might be a lifesaver, so I can be thankful for that instead I guess.    :rolleyes-new:

That is a load of suck. Suck, and lots of testing. Fingers crossed that the stones business goes smoothly - I know that's been a reoccurring sense of drama in my dad's life.

Ha! I was reading about the treadmill run and my American brain read "8:34 min/mile" where it should have read "8:34 min/km". When you said that was an easy pace, I had a few choice expletives for you. Then, I remembered you're from Canada, and re-read. You are forgiven.

Just wanted to wrap this up before the next challenge starts. Which is to say medical issues have sidelined me and there's not much I can do about that.

The positive I'll take out of this challenge is that I'm a big believer in intermittent fasting now. There's few things where I see such a drastic and immediate improvement in my fitness level, and this is one of them. I'll be very curious to see how this affects me once I'm exercising again.

That is all. Good luck on the next challenge all.
