Scene 1, Act 1, and... Action

About me:

I am a 35 year old "Data Geek". My long term goal is to get accepted into the Warrior guild, as I used to dabble in powerlifting and strongman, and it was a lot of fun.
For the moment however I need to shed a lot of weight and undo a very sedentary and comfortable first world existence. 

The below is my outline for my 5 week quest starting on 12 Jan. Better late than never.

 

Main Quest: Quality of life (I am too young to feel this old)

 

Specific goals:

My goals are behaviour related rather than outcome (since that is the bit I control). The goal is followed by how I will score it on a weekly basis.

 

 1) Follow a paleo diet most of the time. I consider a fast or a bulletproof coffee a Paleo meal.
  18 + Meals : A
  15 - 17 : B
  12 - 14 : C
    9 - 11 : D
    < 9     : F

 

 2) Walk a mile a day. I have a nice 800m uphill road close to my house so up and down = 1 mile, or close enough to make no difference

 3) Weight train 3 times per week. Beginner bodyweight workout it is.

Side quest is a tricky one. I spend my life in front of a computer, for my job and entertainment. Aside from my wonderful wife, I can count my friends on one hand and still have enough fingers left to hold a beer.
So the challenge is: Meet more people, and hopefully convert a few into acquaintances and from there into friends.
To do this, I will exploit my one social hobby: Photography. I frequently run shoots with models and Make up artists with fellow photographers attending and this is an excellent vehicle since we are like minded in may ways.

 

So:

 

I will find a photography club (one that actually meets, not just an internet forum) and attend their meetings.

I will also set up a more social shooting club to get better acquainted with my fellow photographers and the models and Make up artists we work with. Arrange a few meet and greets, and "Work the room".
As an introvert I have a strong dislike for crowds, but needs must.

 

I know that for a lot of people the above may seem light, and even dare I say: lazy. But for me this is quite a hill.

 

So if in the next five weeks I achieve only the above I will consider it an opening victory in a war I've been willingly conceding a lot of ground on.

 

I will post here as regularly as I can, and would appreciate any advice and encouragement, which I will gladly return.

Time for an Update:

 

Opening stats: Weight 144kg (317.5#) At 6'0".

 

Stats as of Thursday morning: 141.3 (311.5#) Still at 6'0".

 

So the weight is melting off, but the height seems to be a bit stubborn. In terms of actions the Diet has been good, with only one cheat (sushi). the training however has been a disaster. I am in my two week notice period at the office, so it's been flat tack trying to facilitate a handover. That will be done by weeks end (hopefully) and then I might actually have a life outside the office.

Your goals are pretty similar to mine as are your beginning stats!  I played defensive line in college and used to be much stronger and would like to get that back... maybe not be as big as I was in college but slimmer and as strong would be nice.

Yeah I played Prop Forward (rugby), so I have always been a big guy. Even at my fittest I was well over 225#. 

 

For the moment I'm cutting down on the weight, and then I can have a look at gaining strength/size back. One thing at a time, done properly.

Thanks for the encouragement. Once I have my weight back to fighting fit, I'll become the warrior gain.

 

I must say I am liking the Idea of Ranger, as i'm getting older recovery and time is getting less, injury risk goes up and the pure strength stuff starts looking like a young mans game.

 

I'll never give up squatting and deadlifting, but I'm not sure I'll ever do it competitively again.

I am a ranger who deadlifts and squats and lifts heavy... but I also go the long distances :)
