JediNickD
It is Friday, so this is coming a little late, but I did start the challenge on Monday and will have Battle Logs from then to post soon. Welcome back for another episode in the Adventures of JediNickD! It seems like forever ago that I joined this site and my first challenge. Judging by my level, you might say I'm right! But level and experience mean nothing unless lessons learned are applied in your life. This website has given me practical knowledge in goal setting and planning. Throughout my life, I have been applying that knowledge. In my career, in my job, in my home life, in my Toastmasters training, in the gym, in my Jedi training, and even in my fantasy football league!Throughout the next few challenges, I plan to focus my Jedi lessons around this passage from Return of the Jedi where Obi-Wan says that quote: Luke: [approaching R2-D2] I can't do it, R2. I can't go on alone.Obi-Wan: [from out of sight] Yoda and I will always be with you.Luke: Obi-Wan.[Obi-Wan's spirit approaches Luke]Luke: Ben! Why didn't you tell me? You told me that Darth Vader betrayed and murdered my father.Obi-Wan: Your father... was seduced by the Dark Side of the Force. He ceased to be Anakin Skywalker and "became" Darth Vader. When that happened, the good man who was your father was destroyed. So what I told you was true... from a certain point of view.Luke: A certain point of view?Obi-Wan: Luke, you're going to find that many of the truths we cling to depend greatly on our own point of view. Anakin was a good friend. When I first met him, your father was already a great pilot. But I was amazed how strongly the Force was with him. I took it upon myself to train him as a Jedi. I thought that I could instruct him just as well as Yoda. I was wrong.Luke: There is still good in him.Obi-Wan: He's more machine now than man. His mind is twisted and evil.Luke: I can't do it, Ben.Obi-Wan: You cannot escape your destiny. You must face Darth Vader again.Luke: I can't kill my own father.Obi-Wan: Then the Emperor has already won. You were our only hope.Luke: Yoda spoke of another.Obi-Wan: The other he spoke of is your twin sister.Luke: But I have no sister.Obi-Wan: Hmm. To protect you both from the Emperor, you were hidden from your father when you were born. The Emperor knew, as I did, if Anakin were to have any offspring, they would be a threat to him. That is the reason why your sister remained safely anonymous.Luke: Leia! Leia is my sister.Obi-Wan: Your insight serves you well. Bury your feelings deep down, Luke. They do you credit, but they could be made to serve the Emperor. This challenge, I'll focus on the quote in bold by Obi-Wan Kenobi. In this part of the conversation, Obi-Wan is explaining how perception frames how you think and what you think. The things we believe are true have a foundation built from our perception or view. It is difficult for us to believe in anything without an experience to back it up whether it is first, second, or third hand. These beliefs give us a background for comparison, a springboard for decision making, and a basis for logic. If something appears true from one perceptive, but false from another, then one can encounter difficulty whether someone is hiding your family's past from you or whether you are counting squares in an IQ test puzzle. The difficulty is from seeing only a portion instead of the entire thing. Qui-Gon Jinn drops this very lesson on Anakin Skywalker in The Phantom Menace when he said, "... remember, your focus determines your reality." There is a story about six blind men who were asked to determine what an elephant looked like by feeling different parts of the elephant's body. One feels a leg and says that it is like a pillar; one feels the tail and says that it’s like a rope; one feels the trunk and says that it’s like a tree branch; one feels the ear and says that it’s like a hand fan; one feels the belly and says that it’s like a wall; and one feels the tusk and says that it’s like a solid pipe. Each is only experiencing a piece of the puzzle. Together, they can complete the puzzle. I’ll let Werner Heisenberg summarize my thoughts. “We have to remember that what we observe is not nature in itself, but nature exposed to our method of questioning.†To understand any new concept or situation, search for the other perceptions or points of view. If you ask the same questions and use the same methods, then you should expect the same answers. Try something different, or even unusual, to get a better view on reality There is a saying about not understanding until you've been in someone else's shoes. When you are confronted with an idea you do not understand or a problem which you can not solve, try changing your shoes, because perception determines your reality and reality is more than meets the eye. Now, on to the CHALLENGE!My mission is to be the best Jedi I can be. My main quest is always to enhance my overall health, fitness, and knowledge to be prepared for whatever challenges life could throw at me. As a Jedi, I need to be able to help people, whether that is a life threatening situation or just a charitable one. There is no boss level in Jedi training, there is only tomorrow.I'm keeping it similar as last challenge with a couple upgrades while keeping in mind that Thanksgiving falls in the middle of the challenge. My main quest with attribute points is below:FITNESS: Build STA +2 and DEX +2 by Running, Sprinting, Hiking, Biking, Rowing, Rollerblading, or Training (HIIT or Sports) for 20 minutes or more, three times a week. Get to the gym once a week at lunch time (or on the weekend) for an extra work out.Winter is coming and that's when I tend to mail it in, so I'm going to turn up the pressure by going to the gym at lunch time at least once a week. Schedule will resemble TuWF, MWTh. No light days. Only heavy, dark days where I sweat like a waterfall.FITNESS: Build STR +2 and DEX +1 by completing 400 minutes of Sports Training* and meeting at least 95 % of my fitness side quest goals. I've switched around a few exercises to my fitness side quest goals. Going for another 100%.DIET: Build CON +2 by eating "Healthy Meals"** 32 times or more, eating "Unhealthy Food"*** 20 times or less and count their calories, drinking 240 fl oz of Dr Pepper or less, taking care of my skin and lips by applying moisturizer 80 times or more (twice daily), brushing (twice daily) and flossing (once daily) 120 times or more. Looking to make more small strides. I may get back into calorie counting everything to help with portion control. Something to think about for next challenge if I misbehave. LIFE: Build WIS +3 and CHA +3 by completing two Toastmaster Speeches, participating in Table Topics thrice and Meeting Roles four times, completing one lesson from my High Performance Leadership manual, and by completing 4 IJRS Personal 101 lessons. The High Performance Leadership manual has been thoroughly cracked as I'm two lessons in already, but I'm in the bulk of the work now. I finished my second Competent Leadership manual and have only one speech left in my third Competent Communicator manual. I have 6 speeches left for my Advanced Communicator manuals. I plan to do a Speechcraft training session for the 1 hour training session I need to do for my Advanced Communicator Gold, so I can earn my DTM. My Club Coach and Area Governor roles are going very well. Jedi Training is a bigger focus this round. They are one week lessons and I typically take too long between them. I'm hoping to finish the course this winter. To improve my project management and proposal skills, which are vital to rising higher in the ranks of my contracting company, I decided to take some online courses. I just finished Acquistion 101 which is a prereq for just about every course at the University. Next course I can delay a little because it is two parts with the second being a classroom session at the end of April. * - Training or playing Basketball, Soccer, Rugby, Football, Hockey, Swimming, or Racquet Ball** - "Healthy Meals" means no grease, minimal fat and calories, mostly veggies, meat, and fruit, while avoiding starches. Breakfast is not included in count.*** - "Unhealthy Food" means anything with excessive grease, fat or sugar, empty calories, or any meal void of veggies or fruit. Breakfast is not included in count. NOTE: By these terms, a meal can be neither healthy nor unhealthy. These are neutral meals which I still need to watch my portions on, but will not be tracking this challenge. JediNickD
This week has been odd. First, my Toastmasters evening meeting was Monday night instead of Tuesday. I did my "Get Fit Anywhere" speech and Table Topics Master. Next time I do a similar speech, I need to narrow it down to just a couple exercises instead of a whole routine, because I am delivering very general information instead of delving into specifics of the exercise such as the keys to doing the exercises with proper form for maximum efficiency or calling out the muscles which are being worked. Tuesday's lunch time Toastmasters meeting was cancelled due to low participation (no speakers). I should have done a speech, but we had a much needed officers meeting instead. Wednesday my cardio/lifting schedule was thrown off because I couldn't get a treadmill in the morning or at lunch. Instead, I lifted in the morning and at lunch time I hit the row machine with some hoops after. Thursday and Friday turned into combo workout days as well, because I woke up early and I had extra time to burn. Lastly, my wife got a pressure cooker for Christmas and wants to do more Paleo meals. We've had a pot roast, an Indian chicken Saag dish, and she made fast rice once to go with smoked chicken. All very good and quite easy. Anyone have any delicious suggestions? JediNickD
Also, I just learned about Awesome Games Done Quick and their fundraiser for Cancer Prevention. I watched a bunch of last year's event, because of a post on Uproxx about this year's event. The warpless run on Super Mario Brothers was incredible, but nothing could top a blindfolded attempt at Mike Tyson's Punch Out, with a co-op on Golden Eye being a close third. Now, I am catching up on this year's event. The Super Mario 3 on NES (with warps) blew my mind. They make it look so easy. The Legend of Zelda versus run might have taught me more tricks than I could ever possibly remember. When I play these games, I always avoid looking up cheats and glitches when researching game info (like how many hearts do I need for the Magic Sword), but I'm going to have to give some of these a try. I am itching to have a vintage video game night. Maybe even do it Video Armaggedon style! JediNickD
Yesterday, I did my second speech for my Toastmasters goal. I have another scheduled for Thursday, so I'll get some bonus speaking in for sure. I keep looking for a Mini-Challenge, but there is none to be found :-(. Hopefully, one turns up soon. JediNickD
I keep doing Toastmaster speeches because no one in the club is volunteering to speak. I can prep a 5-7 minute speech a day or two before the meeting, but this is getting a little ridiculous. Many members I haven't seen in over a month. On Saturday, I did a 30 minute Toastmasters training workshop. It was terrifying. I wish I had been better prepared, but I found out only a day before (with large possibility of missing the training due to sick kids at home). I went with no notes really. I had a power point to assist me, but I hardly used it. I went off the cuff and got the audience to participate. It worked out well. I feel the audience enjoyed what I did and got a lot out of it, but I still couldn't wait to get off the stage. 1 Quote Journey to You: Coaching, Mentoring, and Personal Growth World 6 Level 5 | Epic Quest | Toastmasters: Where Leaders are Made | Institute for Jedi Realist Studies | Extra Life 2023 | YouTube Channel | Epic Nerd Camp "No. Try not. JediNickD
Finished second lesson from IJRS Personal 101 Jedi training. Lesson was about excuses we make to avoid training. This is a lesson I completely understand. Looking at your priorities, you can easily assess whether you are making an excuse or whether you actually have something more important to tend to first. Mikroftt
Looks like you are making progress on the list of goals! It is a very long list but does work out all areas of the body nicely. It is a very long list but does work out all areas of the body nicely. I still don't know how you do the speaking so easily. I suppose it is mostly through practice but regardless, keep up the good work there!I like to call it "death by immersion". I knew from the start that if I didn't fully commit to it, then I would give up. Most clubs meet twice a month. That is too much time between meetings for me to take advantage of feedback. I joined three clubs so I can practice weekly. I aim to do a prepared speech every three weeks minimum, but do at least one role and table topics every meeting. The multiple clubs give me a large range of evaluators to give me more perspectives for improvement. I do so much Toastmasters that it is now a part of my DNA.I still struggle outside of meetings with speaking about anything outside of football, Toastmasters, or football, but I am making progress, because before it was just football and football. Practice and preparation are the keys to success. Know your material inside and out, so you can present blindfolded in your sleep. The rest is just showing you have confidence in what you say by the way you move your body and say your words. Practice those aspects when you prepare. It takes time and effort, which we have plenty of both when we want it. JediNickD
I've got three of my IJRS Personal 101 lessons done. Just one more left. Bench Pressed 235 lbs yesterday! Leg Pressed 1310 lbs today! My weight is up to 173 lbs (23 lbs overweight), but it is not all muscle. I want to get down to 160 lbs before June. When the weather warms up, I'm planning to do a lot of running for fun. I want kick ass at fartleks. I want to test my non-existant parkour skills. I want to get myself in rugby shape without going to rugby practice (never been able to do this before, but I would "try" before every rugby season). No more trying or procrastinating these things. This spring, I am doing it! Try not. JediNickD
I had a very active weekend with my daughters. I hit the gym, then took them swmming on Saturday. Sunday we hit the park for some biking, rollerblading, and hiking. Rowed this morning. My legs aren't dead yet. I owe them some running plus a bit more rowing and hiking to finish out the challenge. Try not. JediNickD
To Recap my Mission: My mission is to be the best Jedi I can be. My main quest is always to enhance my overall health, fitness, and knowledge to be prepared for whatever challenges life could throw at me. As a Jedi, I need to be able to help people, whether that is a life threatening situation or just a charitable one. There is no boss level in Jedi training, there is only tomorrow. My main quest with attribute points and grades is below:FITNESS: Build STA +2 and DEX +2 by Running, Sprinting, Hiking, Biking, Rowing, Rollerblading, or Training (HIIT or Sports) for 20 minutes or more, three times a week. Get to the gym once a week at lunch time (or on the weekend) for an extra work out. AI turned up the heat by going to the gym at lunch time or on Saturday at least once a week. I hit workouts heavy, but no weight loss. I'll take some measurements after the next challenge.FITNESS: Build STR +2 and DEX +1 by completing 400 minutes of Sports Training* and meeting at least 95 % of my fitness side quest goals. ASolid performance, though I did have to cram some running in the last 3 days. I need to schedule those better.DIET: Build CON +2 by eating "Healthy Meals"** 32 times or more, eating "Unhealthy Food"*** 20 times or less and count their calories, drinking 240 fl oz of Dr Pepper or less, taking care of my skin and lips by applying moisturizer 80 times or more (twice daily), brushing (twice daily) and flossing (once daily) 120 times or more. AI crushed this! I may get back into calorie counting everything to help with portion control. It wouldn't hurt.LIFE: Build WIS +3 and CHA +3 by completing two Toastmaster Speeches, participating in Table Topics thrice and Meeting Roles four times, completing one lesson from my High Performance Leadership manual, and by completing 4 IJRS Personal 101 lessons. AI finished the third lesson in the High Performance Leadership manual. I'm working through the fourth.I finished my second Competent Leadership manual and have only one speech left in my third Competent Communicator manual. I have one speech left for my Advanced Communicator manuals. I plan to do a Speechcraft training session for the 1 hour training session I need to do for my Advanced Communicator Gold, so I can earn my DTM. My Club Coach and Area Governor roles are going very well. Jedi Training were a big focus this round. They are one week lessons and I typically take too long between them. I finished 4 lessons, but feedback is delayed due to the instructor's maternity leave. To improve my project management and proposal skills, which are vital to rising higher in the ranks of my contracting company, I decided to take some online courses. I just finished Acquistion 101 which is a prereq for just about every course at the University. Next course I signed up for and started last week. It is two parts with the second being a classroom session at the end of April, which I may have to miss due to work schedule.
