sylph
There are a few of us circus folks over in the assassin's guild. For some it's a fun hobby, for others, the main point of activity/exercise. Most of us have circus, or at least the name of our discipline as a tag for our challenge threads. A couple other disciplines:LyraSilksPoleContortion There's also a big hooping thread somewhere in this section (or was, not sure if it's active anymore since I'm not a hooper) Quote Link to comment
Deirdredawne
I hoop and love it (does amazing things with contouring your waist!) It's also my way of stretching out after a workout, becuase I hoop dance. It's also super fun and makes me feel like a free-loving hippy . There's an Aussie lady on Youtube (HoopLove, I think) who has awesome tutorials. I took lessons locally, and loved the community of it! Just started pole fitness classes, and she's offering some classes with silk on the pole, which I'm interested in. But damn is pole ever a workout! I could hardly lift my coffee cup the 2 days after! Dizz
My juggling has really leveled up the last few months. I'm starting to pass and my CJ is looking smoother than ever. I credit doing upper body workouts. Also, beginning to dabble in hoop, mostly isolations. SkateTroe
Circus people? All right! I was involved with my high school's "Short Attention-Span Circus" for all four years I was there. My avatar is actually a picture of me during one of the magic acts in a show. In addition, I'm pretty decent with a diabolo—I recently started dabbling in vertax (Look it up if you're unfamiliar—it's pretty legit.) I never really dedicated enough time to get good at 3+ ball juggling or clubs, though every so often I think about it. I've also got a set of cigar boxes and a contact juggling ball that I haven't gotten to do much with yet. Hmm...Maybe the circus folks on this board should make a collab video someday... Gah, I miss the circus club now... Quote Level 0 HumanSTR: 0 DEX: 0 CON: 0 STA: 0 WIS: 0 CHA: 0(Impressive, huh?) Respawn in 3...2...1... Link to comment
lctrc
"Contact Juggling" - I'd never thought about it having a name, it was "the cool tricks David Bowie did with the crystal balls in Labyrinth" (yeah, I know that was really someone else doing it...) I can juggle three balls, poorly. My son even picks them up for me when I drop them. Now if he would only give them back... Quote Link to comment
SkateTroe
So, earlier this week, I pulled out this FUSHIGI™ Ball (As-seen-on-TV Contact Juggling) that I got from an old friend who passed away some time ago. I've already put in a few solid hours with it, having a couple of the more basic moves to a somewhat respectable level. Then, just out of curiosity, I actually read the little slip that came with the ball. It came with a couple warnings that, as a juggler, made me laugh, so I thought I'd share some of them with you guys, and see if you get the same kick out of it that I did. First off, it starts out with a paragraph that basically says "Sorry, but FUSHIGI™ is not actually magic, and you'll have to do a (notably understated) amount of practice before you can make it appear to do anything you saw in the commercials." As for the warnings, apparently, as it "is not a toy," FUSHIGI™ can be dangerous in the hands of anyone below 12 years of age. A couple are sensible—Don't drop it on concrete, or hardwood, or any hard surface for that matter. But then you get some that, at least I feel, go a bit against some of the basic ideals of juggling, such as "Do not attempt to pass FUSHIGI to another person via any airborne maneuver. Injury may be sustained." (That's such a great way to word it, by the way.) "Never assume that any other person possesses more proficient or equivalent skills to yourself, so tandem FUSHIGI™ maneuvers are not suggested..." I feel like juggling has a long and proud history of 2+ man juggling tricks. "When storing Fushigi™, NEVER...subject [it] to any form of sunlight" And they kindly saved my favorite for last: "To eliminate risk to your eyes, NEVER use Fushigi™ outdoors. NEVER hold Fushigi™ anywhere near your face. Additionally," (I don't even get this part) "be sure to not hold Fushigi™ against any part of your skin or body." I'm not sure how these guys define contact juggling, but it seems a touch out of the norm... And yes, I recognize that this is them covering their asses, but still, I find it entertaining. I feel like it's just shy of straight up saying "The manufacturer holds no responsibility for any juggling that may occur with this product." 1 Quote Level 0 HumanSTR: 0 DEX: 0 CON: 0 STA: 0 WIS: 0 CHA: 0(Impressive, huh?) Dizz
That's too funny. Fushigi was warned early on by the contact juggling community about potential hazards such as fire or impact. That CYA statement is still a little overkill. Fushigi caused a lot of controversy.... So much so that it created this 100 page thread and the name FUSHIGI autochanges to BANANA...http://www.contactjuggling.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=7708&hilit=banana Quote Level 9 Tiefling Ranger/Scout STR 9 DEX 16 CON 15 INT 10 WIS 13 Current challenge Mordor: Hobbiton -> Rivendell (238/458 miles) Water advice Join the Circus! JesterShay
That is... An interesting set of warnings. The one about no contact is mind boggling. However, impact is a legitimate warning, especially with acrylic spheres. You shouldn't ever juggle them normally because if they impact each other they go flying really fast. I was messing with a heavy chromed sphere this weekend and i can only imagine what kind of damage that could do. Also, when I got my clear acrylic sphere (from the Sphereplay folks at a renn fair a few years back), they warned me to not leave it lying around in direct sunlight, because it could act like a magnifying glass and set things on fire. SkateTroe
Yeah, I can see where most of the warnings are actually coming from, but I still found them entertaining. As for those guys on contactjuggling.org, I only read a couple of pages, but I can tell it must have gotten pretty heated. Personally, I get annoyed when people just decide that someone does something entirely as a money grab. I'm not trying to defend the guys who made Fushigi or anything, and I could see it as a money grab, but I could also see it as someone who saw this thing, thought it was the coolest thing he'd ever seen, and wanted to share it with the world. The trailer that a lot of these guys didn't care for was just his interpretation of the art form, and isn't art all about interpretation? In all, part of me is glad for Fushigi, because I wouldn't have even tried contact juggling if it wasn't for it and its less-than-honest infomercials (I'm pretty sure the guy I got it from bought it expecting a magic trick, and never touched it after realizing what it really was. He wasn't the most dexterous...). On an entirely different note, the days are getting warmer, which means more outdoor juggling, probably on campus once I've brushed up on my diabolo and 3-ball skills. Eventually I'll get to add CJ to that list, as well. With any luck, I'll drum up some interest and start a Circus Club here. (My high school had one that I was involved with all four years, and it's been an idle dream of mine to start one here, as well.) JesterShay
You wouldn't happen to be in Oklahoma would you? All I've got here is Flow people, which is OK, but not my ideal jam. Would love a more circus skills focused group. Quote Link to comment

SkateTroe
We were celebrating St Pat's earlier this month with a concert, among other festivities, when, in the back of the crowd, one guy was doing poi (poying?). After a bit, another girl started hooping. I cried inside because my diabolo was a 20 minute walk away, so I couldn't join these friends in circus... Dizz
What? You didn't have your props with you??? For shame!!! I just got back from the Tucson Juggling Fest. It's a camping festival.. probably about 50 people. I can pass clubs now woohoo! I am polka dotted with bruises from it though. Got smacked in the eye and arms. Made a lot of new friends and strengthened old ones. Gave a few lessons and received some. Workshops were informal.... if you want to learn something, grab someone who knows how and ask! Maybe next year I'll try slacklining.
