Bekah's Path to Super Yogi--getting BEAST STRONG!

but I DO want to be strong enough to do this easily.

Short story: There is NOTHING like doing a few Kino MacGregor videos when you are 259lbs to make you realize just how weak and out of shape you are.





Over the last 10 years, I have addressed and dealt with a lifetime of trauma and abuse, and changed dramatically, but also gained 100 lbs. The last 2 years have been about coming to grips with the fat me and loving myself despite what my body looks like...and just recently I turned a HUGE corner with that, and it's time to move on to the next phase of becoming who I want to be (and she isn't a princess...weird!) and that person is not 260 lbs and someone who plays video games all day long to cope with life. She is an active, fun, happy person who can do anything she wants with her body and loves her life.

So it's time to get un-weak and un-out of shape and un-fat.


So it's time to get strong, because getting strong will build muscle, increase my metabolism and help me lose fat and be able to do the things I want to do, but I am also going to be addressing cardio and flexibility, because you don't get to be a super yogi who can run whenever she wants, without doing those things. I am planning to keep the same 4 year-long goals I started last challenge, but the exercise portion will be a mix of yoga, cardio and strength and I am going to cold turkey sugar and dairy, seriously! I realized I am not capable of small steps with stuff like that and it happening, and it's not about my emotional health, so it's not going to screw up my head. I didn't quit drinking or smoking or drugs a little at a time, I said "no more" and walked away and never looked back. This has to be the same.

So this looks like it will be how it's going to go :) But I need to get some more dumbbells and move the goddamn shit out of the FL room to be able to use the treadmill and have space to do this shit. 
 

From Maaya:

 

Now, how to make your body work for instead of against you.... and to prepare yourself to be a better yogi (and to give you the potential of succeeding in aerial): TIME TO GET BEAST STRONG!

 

Day 1: strength day A

  • Circuit 1 (cycle through, repeat 5 times with 30-60 seconds between exercises, 90-120 seconds between sets)
    • ​Weighted squats (dumbbells on shoulders or kettlebell against chest), 5 reps
    • Chest press, 5 reps
    • Dumbbell row, 5 reps
    • Bicep curls, 5 reps
  • Circuit 2 (cycle through, repeat 3 times with 30-60 seconds between exercises, 90-120 seconds between sets)
    • Bicep curls, 8 reps
    • Tricep kickbacks, 8 reps
    • Side lateral raises, 8 reps
    • Front lateral raises, 8 reps
  • Make sure to take at least 10 minutes to stretch!  Get your chest and back muscles specifically!

Day 2: Running/cardio day!

  • 40 minutes of 10 sec run/90 sec walk and work up to the C25K/ZombiesRun.  Do fast/slow intervals.
  • At least 10 minutes to stretch.  Give your legs special attention.

Day 3: Strength day B (cycle through, repeat 5 times with 30-60 seconds between exercises, 90-120 seconds between sets)

  • Circuit 1
    • Weighted squats (dumbbells on shoulders or kettlebell against chest), 5 reps
    • Overhead press, 5 reps
    • One-leg straight leg deadlift, 5 reps per side
  • Circuit 2 (cycle through, repeat 3 times with 30-60 seconds between exercises, 90-120 seconds between sets)
    • Lying leg raises, 10 reps
    • Swiss ball glute bridges, 10 reps (either shoulderblades on ball, or for a harder variant, feet on ball)
    • 30 second plank (if it's too easy, side plank, please!)
  • Don't forget to stretch for at least 10 minutes!  Legs and shoulders will want love, as well as your low back.

Day 4: Yoga day!

  • If you attend a class, go for a power yoga type of class.  Not a restorative class - pick one that pushes your strength and/or flexibility.  At most, only one out of four yoga sessions (one a month) should be relaxing and easy.

Day 5: Strength day A!

  • Repeat above routine!  The subsequent week, you'll do B day twice (on day 1 and day 5) and A day only once.

Day 6: Cardio/Running day!

  • Repeat your running routine~

Day 7: SLEEP LIKE THE DEAD

Your goals 1 to 4 are similar to mine. We come from different approaches trying to reach the same results... good luck. Stay consistent!

 

Loved the video... not sure I can do half those poses... but soon. I too would love to do a one handed hand stand. :)

I just bought more dumbbells on Amazon :) (I got the 5 lb and 7 lb ones :D

 

and it's official! I went for a walk tonight, in 45F weather with a wind chill making it 35ish, and I had ZERO pain even after walking 2 miles... and normally after about half a mile, my legs are cramping and my ankles are killing me. sooooo yeah, I need to get the hell out of here and move somewhere colder bc this is bullshit.

Day 7: SLEEP LIKE THE DEAD

I am impressed to see you committing 3 days a week to strength training!

 

There was a book I paged through recently (One of the New Rules of Lifting Series) discussing some strength movements.  When discussing squats, they recommended body weight squats to get the motion down.  You can hang on to something for stability.  It is also a good stretch.  Then they talked about moving on to what they called a goblet squat where you hold something like a kettleball or a dumbell or a jug of water in front of you like a goblet.  Hmm.  I wonder what is on this forum for squats.....

 

Eureka!  I have found it!  It looks like Spezzy wrote an article on this already.

 

Another thing that book mentioned was as an alternative to push-ups, instead of using the knees, you can push against something that is elevated, like a counter if you can stabilize your feet.  That way, you get extra leverage without taking away from the core work you get from doing a push-up.  As you get stronger, you can pick something lower to push against.  Then you are doing push-ups from the ground.  Then you are putting your feet up on something elevated instead of your hands.  Then you are putting your feet up against the wall and doing hand-stand push-ups with the best of the Rangers!

Part of my commitment is easy, bc someone else told me "do this" and that just is easier than me trying to figure it out and make excuses for myself. So I am going to do it, bc they said so...I'm submissive like that I suppose ;) 

Anyways, these are great links and advice and I will read them and implement them as necessary :) Thank you again and I am glad you stopped by! 

 

EDIT: After reading both...I can say that I have read the push up one previously...and knew of those variations, and find knee push ups very doable :) 

As for squats: I need to do box squats, the end. Only bc I can't get below parallel and still get my ass back up more than once or twice bc yeah, I have much more ass than I do leg strength, so there. BUT...my form is fine, although I have ALWAYS looked up when I squat, so that was a good tidbit of advice. (I was a powerlifter in high school, so form is probably the only thing I know reasonably well!  But really, there is a LOT of new stuff and stuff I never learned bc well, if it wasnt low back squat or dl or bench, I never learned it! LOL!)

knee push ups don't really translate well to regular push ups though... I had gotten to where I could knock out a hundred knee push ups... and couldn't even do ONE real push up... I think doing them elevated and then lessening the elevation is the best progression to regular push ups (assuming of course that your end goal is regular push ups and something like chatarunga (I have no flippin idea how to spell that word... so shoot me, k??))

and so when I think of Teagarden, I think of a Super Yogi who is far more disciplined and advanced and someone I look up to in terms of being a better yogi, and she is doing a yoga challenge goal this time, and I saw that her percentages and mine as far as completion, are fairly similar...so if SHE is a "Super Yogi" in my head, then I can't very well consider myself to be a "total loser wanting to be a yogi" then huh? But I don't feel anything CLOSE to being a Super Yogi, so maybe just a Super Yogi Trainee?

Awesome challenge again :). And yay for the two miles walk without pain! Walking is just so awesome, I always love to do it :D.

hmmm walking like this would make it a LOT more fun :D I don't know if I have ever seen that, or at least don't remember it, so thanks for sharing!

Not to toot my own horn or anything, I quit them all on the same day even. May 21, 2004 actually.

And dude I deserve a fucking medal for not killing him! I need to get out of here ASAP, things are escalating again and next week they are going to possibly blow the fuck up again for sure (I can't give details here yet, but it ain't going to be pretty)

Marathon fight today (seriously how does a person bitch for 4 hours and have breath left???) and so I didn't get anything done and I have a migraine now....fuck this bullshit.

oh and....

apparently eating sugar is a coping mechanism for stress, no wonder I'm fat and can lose 40 lbs in 3 months bc I left...

I wanted to eat ALL the sugar today but I am NOT letting him derail my plans for my life. period.

He felt like an ass after all the bullshit and moved the stuff in the FL room so I can get to the treadmill at least, and I can do the rest in the living room, so that was good.

I feel you on the going cold turkey; it was the only way for me to shake a drug habit as well - by running out and refusing to get any more. 
 
I don't know much about your home environment right now, but it doesn't sound good at all. STOP AND BREATHE! Unfortunately, murdering people is frowned upon, even if you get away with it :tongue:
