IslandGirl_Becks
I started writing this a week ago because I was so excited for the next challenge. Something I posted towards the end of the last challenge kinda got me thinking… I love the Lord of the Rings. I read the books long before the movie(s) came out, one summer all 3 in a weekend. I love the epic journeys. Hiking 12 miles this weekend, I imagined that we were on our way to Rivendell. There are 4 challenges until the Ragnar Trail North Cascades, which I can match up with the Hobbit+Trilogy as themes for the upcoming challenges. Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you the first chapter: There and Back Again. In a sense, it really is There and Back again because I'm travelling the first and last weeks of the challenge. I'm trying to work it so I fly home on Fridays and can do the CF Open workout on Saturday. Run. Do a long run every week, starting with 6 mi and adding at least a half mile every time. I should hit 8-9 miles by the end of the challenge, a great start for my Ragnar prep (+STA) Eat Well.* Record what I eat, and cut out the sugar. This is going to be really hard since I have a birthday 2 weeks in to the challenge, for which I will make an exception. In fact, I have no problem with a piece of dark chocolate now and again. It’s the general sugar and high-carb-ness that I can’t handle. Muesli at breakfast (not that sweet American stuff, Euro-style) is fine. Large volumes of oats aren't. Strictly limit bread. No ice cream. No doughnuts, cake, cookies, Rittersport bars, frappacinos, large volumes of fruit, or any of that shizznit (feel free to add to my list). Just say yes to veggies, lots of veggies, and meat. (+CON, +WIS) This challenge coincides with the CrossFit Open, which I have signed up for for the first time (yikes). I will be travelling for 2 weeks through the challenge, which means I’ll be missing several CF workouts throughout challenge… egal, of no matter. I’m going to do all 6 workouts. Link to my Open profile provided upon request. In a sense, CrossFit remains my battle training. (+STR, +DEX) Just kidding *If I’m being completely honest, I have another, more immediate goal. I want to have a super fit body for shirtless summer running. My bf is a soccer playing tree climber (he could be Manuel Neuer’s brother), who doesn’t know that he’s also my fitness hero. We like running together, and I really want to be the super fit gf. So I need to cut back to lean out. An exception will be made for my birthday, when there is a chance I'll be eating Mochalog courtesy of my Mumsy 2 Quote We are what we repeatedly do. Thalianost
Love the theme. I will have to work out my own Tolkien themed challenge someday, problem is I am not really interested in running or walking. Maybe a Battles of Middle Earth sort of thing... I like the Battles of Middle Earth idea! Forth, Eorlingas! M knows that I appreciate his fitness, and I know that he appreciates mine (hey, I'm not a total slouch). We've agreed that it's something we're not going to slouch on in our lives, being active means too much for both of us. There's a difference in our stories, though... he's been super fit since he was a little kid. Continuously. I went through a 12 year phase where I eschewed any form of organized physical activity, and it's something I'm figuring out how not to resent/regret now. Just kind of turns in to a conversation the two of us have from different directions. Quote We are what we repeatedly do. IslandGirl_Becks
I flew over the Misty Mountains yesterday and landed in the frozen wasteland called Detroit. Day 1 of the challenge is a success Breakfast isn't free at the hotel, and I'm hoarding my per-diem for some new Nanos (my Merrels just died). So today I had a handful to turkey jerky bits, then headed out to Starbucks for a cup of bulletproof coffee for breakfast. I thought I was going to be shipped off to an institution, the way my barista looked at me when I asked her to blend a pat of butter (they have Kerrygold at *$) into my Pike's Place Roast... but the other barista came to my rescue and my coffee came out perfectly. After basically botching my first class teaching the software I work for, I had a pretty easy time on the elliptical followed by some swim practice. 15 minutes in the pool felt like a half hour... I did it because it's good for me, but I really am not a good swimmer. Just can't get the breathing/stroke/not inhaling water thing down. But I worked on it. 1 Quote We are what we repeatedly do. Everstorm
I had never heard of Nanos, I had to Google. Rope-climbing shoes for Crossfit? This is awesome! I have been training hard on rope climbs lately; I may need a pair....Well done getting in a workout during travel, even if swimming isn't your thing. 1 Quote Life before Death Strength before Weakness Journey before Destination Link to comment

I have been training hard on rope climbs lately; I may need a pair.... My original Nano 2.0's died in a laundry accident after muddy Ultimate in Sweden last summer... they didn't have any of the new "rope climbing protection" or anything fancy, but they had a really solid footbed that was just cushy enough for comfortable running. IslandGirl_Becks
Bulletproof coffee, I usually get hot buttered coffee from Starbucks because they carry kerrygold butter that's grass fed and almost entirely organic. IslandGirl_Becks
I haven't posted much towards the end of this all, but it was pretty good.I'm back from my week of travel, which ended up being healthy aside from not sleeping well. Lots of qdoba salads, getting my walks in every day, and hiking dtw before flying. I knocked out 15.1 yesterday, followed by an hour of boxing! I'm all for finding new ways to develop coordination, strength, and endurance outside of the usual methods. The first open wod certainly proved that my coordination/dexterity needs serious work... IslandGirl_Becks
I suppose I ought to more directly address my challenge goals:1. My "cold weather running" kit wasn't enough for sub-zero windchill, so I had to do my 6 mile run on a stinkin treadmill... But I made it!2. As said before, eating was good. I did have flatbread pesto pizza one day, but it was my running day and burned clean :-) after boxing+CF yesterday I had a Rittersport mini, taking advantage of depleted muscle glycogen and an insulin spike to effectively use the sugar for recovery. It paid off, since I ended doing a bunch more moving later in the day.3. 15.1 = 101 + #100I've been told that there will be no mochalog at my birthday this year, because mom had something else planned... What could it be? 2 Quote We are what we repeatedly do. rgbb
I love me some Lord of the Rings! BUT, I have never read the books, so an unlisted part of this challenge is to read The Fellowship (and more, if I'm able) using the Kindle Unlimited trial. I'm excited! I'm giving up desserts and adding in veggies, too. rgbb
Thanks! I did try to read The Fellowship in high school after seeing the movie, and I think I did give up within the first 50 pages. I love to read and love fantasy literature, but I think I was too wrapped up in the pace of the movie that I wanted it to go more quickly. I'm ready to try it again! And, yay veggies! Rather than focusing just on trying to eat them and be done, this time I'm really trying to pay attention to how I feel afterward (which is usually pretty amazing). 1 Quote High Wood Elf - Level 2STR: 0 | DEX: 0 | STA: 0 | CON: 6.5 | WIS: 7 | CHA: 1 Current Challenge: 2.2 Past Challenges: 2.1 1 A little about me . . .
